Chapter 11: Telling the Kids

Jack was in the kitchen, making breakfast as Jane walked in ready to go to the kids school as she hoped the principal would take her side and not the other parents.

"Are you ready babe?"

"Yeah." Jane said as she prayed this would go good.

"I can't wait to tell the kids about the move, but then again, telling the kids will be the hardest part along with the move." Jane said as they walked hand in hand to the car.

...

They arrived at the school, both feeling a mix of anxiety and doubt about the way the situation might get handled, they were hoping for the best.

"I'm just gonna go ahead and say that if one cross word gets said to us, we're packing this weekend. I'm not going to deal with somebody picking the wrong side that puts one of our kids in a situation like he has been put in." Jane said as she tried to relax and think positive, but the scenarios swirling around in her head gave her a lot of mixed emotions and anxiety.

"I think we should tell the kids tonight."

"I thought the same thing, but we might just take Connor home early."

"I'm not gonna leave Raegan here."

"I know, I just want to leave as soon as we're dismissed."

"And we will."

"I mean for good Jack. Nothing's working here for us anymore, our jobs are stressful, our kids are unhappy and I just want for us to be happy and we can't be because of this and everything else."

''We'll be happy again soon baby, don't worry." Jack said as he quickly gave her a kiss.

"Let's go get this over with." Jane said as she hoped no one crosses over her.

...

"Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery?" The school secretary asked as both of them stood up.

"That's us." Jack said as they entered the little office.

"Principal Baker will see you now."

"Okay."

They entered the principal's office to see Connor, the young boy and his parents as Jane sat down with Jack sitting beside her.

"I have you all here today to discuss what happened and to tell each side of both of their stories."

"He's been flirting with my girl." The young boy said

"This is what we were called about?" Jack asked

"Mr. Montgomery, these certain situations can get out of hand."

"It already did Mr. Baker, this young man pushed my son into a locker." Jane said

"No, Connor pushed Garrett into the locker and threatened him."

"Do y'all have security cameras?"

"We do, but we don't allow the parents to see the tapes."

"Have you watched them?"

"No, but I have been meaning to."

"Well, I suggest you do it then before accusing my son of being a bully." Jane said

"He was the one who pushed me." Garrett said

"Mr. Baker, both of the notes sent home yesterday said that both boys pushed each other into the lockers and threatened one another." The mother of the young man said.

"I seen Garrett up against the locker yesterday, which was inflicted by Connor."

"So, what exactly was this all about then?"

"Dad, I told you this yesterday." Garrett said

"This was over some girl?"

"Not just some girl ma'am."

"Sounds like it."

"What is going on here?" Garrett's mom asked.

"The young lady they were presumably fighting over is pregnant." Mr. Baker said as all the parents looked at both boys.

"Excuse me?" Jane asked

"I need water." Garrett's mother said as she inhaled hers immediately.

"How far along?" Garrett's father asked.

"Since fall break."

"Well, we were out of town on fall break." Connor said as he looked at both of his parents.

"You were texting her."

"I was not, I was dating her before you did and she broke up with me before fall break, then she texted me a couple of nights ago, but I ignored her after seeing you too all over each other at the football game together when I was playing." Connor said as embarrassment flashed on the other young man's face.

"Mr. Baker, I believe this young man owes my son an apology." Jane said.

"I agree Mrs. Montgomery. Garrett, please apologize to Connor here and shake hands."

"I'm sorry." Garrett said as Connor knew it wasn't sincere, but did it out of respect for his mother as Mr. Baker pressed the button to page his secretary.

"Mary, could you call Paige Johnson to my office, please?"

"Yes sir."

"Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery, I'm so sorry for all the inconvenience."

"It's quite alright Mr. Baker, but next time, watch the security cameras before falsely accusing my child of a wrong act." Jane said as she walked passed Jack and Connor.

As they were passing through the office, Connor's ex girlfriend, Paige walked by with tears down her face as she headed to Mr. Baker's office as her parents were right behind her.

"Come on sweetheart."

"I don't want to be here anymore."

"Mary, I'm checking both of my kids out today and I'd like their student files either handed to me or faxed over to my faxing machine.''

"Mrs. Montgomery, I can't do that. It's against my job and the rules."

"Today is my kids last day here at this school, so please do as I ask or you can do as they go to their new school."

"Last day?" Connor asked

"I'll fax them over to you this afternoon."

"Thank you and could you call my daughter to the office, please and thank you." Jane said as she smiled and winked at Jack.

"What's going on?" Connor whispered to his dad."

"You'll find out when we get home."

...

Raegan came sauntering in with a smile on her face as she seen her parents and Connor, standing there.

''What happened?"

"Let's go." Jane said as she ushered them out the office door and into the lobby and out to the parking lot.

"Dad?" Raegan asked

"Kids, me and your father need to tell you something. We have decided to take two new job offers."

"Where?"

"Nashville."

"As in Tennessee?"

"That's the one." Jane said

"Will y'all still be working as the same occupations you have been?"

"Yes." Jack said

"So, when do we start packing?" Connor asked

"Today and the rest of the weekend. We'll have some of our family members help too." Jack said

"Hey mama?"

"Yeah baby?"

"We can finally be country singers."

"I believe you could honey, I'm kinda not able to right now."

"Mama, plenty of country stars have had babies."

"Well, I like to sing, but I like my job."

"I think you could sing for a living babe."

"I love y'all, but I set my course a long time ago."

"I know and thank you for giving birth to us."

"You're welcome."

"How funny would it be if y'all found out you were having twins again?"

Connor and Raegan started laughing as Jane looked at Jack, who smiled back at her.

"Not as funny as having to watch them while me and your mama go to work or have a date night." Jack and Jane both started laughing as Connor looked at Raegan.

"Not funny you two."

"But I believe we'll only be having one baby honey, so don't worry."

"By the way, thanks for always being there for me." Connor said as Jane smiled.

"Y'all are my babies and I will always be by your side, even if you're wrong."

"I'm sorry it didn't work out between you and Paige, bub."

"She just wasn't the one, I guess."

"She just didn't know how good she had it."

"Well, I hope I find someone just like dad did."

"You'll find her buddy, I promise."

"Good things come to people who wait and I think this move will be great. A new start and everything will be brand new." Jane said as she rubbed her stomach.

"We do too." Connor said as he was happy about the move.

"I am too." Raegan said

"I'm starting to like our new normal." Jane said

"Me too."

...

Later on that night, they had a few boxes already pack with the lighter stuff as Jane came out of the bathroom from taking a shower.

"I'll miss our house."

"I will too."

"Our kids grew up here."

"I know and now, the baby will grow up in a different house."

"Did you take a picture of the measurement wall?"

"Yeah."

"I know I should be happy about this like I was earlier, but this was our first real home. We bought it right after we got married and then, I got pregnant in this very bedroom."

"And you got pregnant again."

"We got pregnant again on the beach honey." Jane said, crying as Jack wiped her tears away.

"We've had great times and not so great times, but like you said, we need to move on."

"I know, but it's hard."

"And just think, we get to bring our baby home in a new place where we can start new memories with him."

"You think it's a boy?"

"I know it's a boy."

"What if it's a girl?"

"Well, you've had all the signs of being pregnant with boy, so I just think it's a boy."

"Well, we're going to find out soon." Jane said as she laid down on his chest.

"I still like the name Sawyer for a boy."

"I like the name Samuel."

"And if we have a girl?"

"Britton is still coming to me."

"Well, we named our kids Connor James and Raegan Mae, so we'll figure something out." Jack said as he kissed her.

"Okay."

"I love you baby doll."

"I love you too baby."

They drifted off to sleep, knowing it would be busy for them for awhile as they needed some sleep.
