thirty one
I was on edge for the entire dinner service. Asra had stated that he was talking to Caleb this morning and lunch had already passed by and he had not showed up. I busied myself with cleaning, forcing one of the kitchen staff to go on her break early. I knew if I didn't distract myself, then I would barge into his office demanding to know the outcome.
"You alright there, Luna?"
It startled me at the close contact of the voice, my head whipping around to find Serenity hovering behind me. As per usual, her arms were holding a large wash basket full of white bed sheets. Her head cocked, and she stared at me with concern.
Sighing, my shoulders sagged, and I dropped my eyes back to the pan I was scrubbing. "I'm okay."
"Are you sure?" I could hear the concern in her tone. "You've washed that pot twice now whilst I have been in here."
Blinking, I paused my scrubbing. Emptying the pan, I eyed it before looking at the towel I was stacking them on. I had washed three pots, but we only used two. I groaned, dropping my head backwards to glare at the ceiling.
Rinsing the pan, I lay it on the side and wiped my hands on another towel. My fingers gripped the edge of the counter as I fought to come back to reality.
"Luna?"
"Ailia is fine, Serenity." I mumbled.
"Do you need my help?"
I shook my head, turning around to face her. "I'm okay, honestly. Thank you."
"Something on your mind?" She wondered.
My jaw tightened, knowing I could not disclose the actual information to her. Having a spy in the ranks could mean chaos within the entire pack. I couldn't do that to them, Serenity included.
"It's okay, just something's going on that I can't stop thinking about." I explained.
"Perhaps you need a distraction." She quipped.
"I am trying." I laughed, gesturing to the kitchen.
"Maybe it isn't a good enough one." She shrugged.
I laughed. "Well, I have to prepare dinner soon. There isn't much I can do."
"Perhaps you just need some music." She grinned, before turning to the other two women in the kitchen. "I am sure some music won't hurt?"
They cheered with agreement, and I raised an eyebrow. "Music? From where?"
"The radio, silly." Serenity pointed to the small box in the window.
"Is that what that is?" I wondered. "I thought it was just a decoration."
She laughed, handing me the wash basket before leaning around me. Taking the wooden box in her hands, she pressed a button before spinning a dial. It buzzed and crackled before the faint sound of a voice mumbled through the white spotty part of the box. With a gentle tap on the side, Serenity got it going and grinned as she placed it back on the side.
An upbeat tune was playing as a female voice sang about a party she went to. I cocked my head, wondering how this device even worked. Evermore didn't have such things, and I was used to the televisions now, but this one didn't even have pictures!
"See if that helps!" Serenity chirped, taking the basket from me with a small thanks.
The music was loud enough that I couldn't help but focus on it more. I thanked her for her advice, and she left with a small nod and a smile. Everyone got back to their work, the nosey wait staff disappearing back into the dining room. They were on cleanup duty, since most of the kitchen staff were on their lunch right now.
Rolling my shoulders, I turned back to the sink and finished washing the few dishes I had left. With the music playing in the background, it didn't take long. Once they were finished, I dried my hands and spun around.
"I'm gonna take my lunch now." I announced.
A small happy chorus graced my ears as I removed my apron and hung it up. I grabbed the plate of leftovers I had prepared earlier and warmed it up in the microwave. Once ready, I took both my dish and a drink with a straw, and made my way to Asra's office.
The bond was telling me he wasn't in there when I arrived, but I stayed anyway. I want my scent to linger on his chair for a while. Pushing the door open with my hip, I took a sip of my drink through my straw as I entered the small room. The sun was bright through the large window, and I eyed the passing wolves outside as I walked toward the desk chair.
Pushing his keyboard aside, I set down my plate. Eying the room, I debated on sitting in silence, and deciding against, I wiggled the computer mouse. The screen lit up, and I grimaced at the sight of his security system.
Asra was a man who liked everything secure.
I huffed, not knowing how to get into the stupid technology device.
Picking up my sandwich, I hummed at the melted cheese. This was a panini, something I was growing rather fond of. The crispy outer shell to the squashy middle was so satisfying. Today I had taken some seasoned chicken from lunch, paired it with some lettuce and squashed it together with some cheese.
It was simple, but damn, did it taste good. The chicken was tender and had just the right amount of spice and herbs.
I'd say compliments to the chef, but... you know, that's me!
I giggled to myself, leaning back in Asra's chair and staring out of the window. Once the food was gone, I picked my glass of Pepsi and got comfortable.
Say, didn't this chair move?
Grinning, I pushed myself around, using my feet. There was just enough room around the desk to get around whilst picking up some speed. I wasn't sure how I managed to not hit anything.
I must have been a race driver in a previous life.
Snorting a laugh, my distraction was my downfall, and I crashed into a filing cabinet. There was a dull thud before some paperwork fell to the floor and I winced as my Pepsi spilled over the edge and down my shirt.
Groaning, I slid the chair away to put it back to its rightful place. Setting my now empty cup on the side, I stared down at the wet patch. It was way too damp to play off as a small spill, which meant I would have to change.
I gathered my things before remembering that I knocked some paperwork over. Spinning around with alarm, my chest fell with sudden relief when I found them dry and Pepsi free. Crouching, I gathered them into a pile before standing and trying to figure out the order they went in. Luckily, they had page numbers.
I paid the contents no mind, until the first page sat on the top, the title of my name glaring out at me. Hesitating, I blinked down at it before giving in to temptation.
Flicking through the pages, I didn't want to dive too deep into it. There were brief facts about my initiation here; my hospital reports of my attack, and the drugs and time I spent unconscious. Also included were my health statistics, including my blood type and body measurements. It was weird, but it was also rather normal.
Besides the many basic hospital reports, there were condensed pages summarizing my history. Some were scrawled in Asra's handwriting, others were typed, and nothing was a major red flag. It was all facts. A brief past of my history with Evermore and Darius, and then the basics of my acceptance to be Luna.
Why was this not in a filing cabinet?
Why was it loose and where did it come from?
I grimaced, choosing to search the file cabinet instead of the full paperwork. To my surprise, one drawer was slightly open. Swallowing the sudden unease, I hooked my fingers into the handle. It took little to open it, the lock not in place. My confusion only grew when I found the lock perfectly working. It wasn't even broken.
It wasn't exactly easy to get in to though. So why was it out and why did Asra not lock it back up? That was very un-Asra like.
Peeping inside, I found only my file was the one that was missing, everything else having the corresponding number of files to each separating topic. Why just mine? Perhaps Asra was digging up on some facts before he interrogated Caleb? That would make sense, but he was stupid for not locking it up.
Rolling my eyes, I slid my paperwork back into its spot and shut the cabinet. It required Asra's fingerprint, and I wasn't even sure how I was supposed to lock it. Cocking my head with curiosity, I pressed my thumb onto the scanner. It buzzed before a light flashed beneath my skin and the light turned red. My eyes widened as the door locked itself, before a huge-ass grin erupted on my face.
I wasn't sure how he got my fingerprint, but I was more honoured that he gave me such permissions! Technology, I have defeated you once more.
Collecting my dishes once again, I left his office with that same stupid smile on my face. Depositing them in a dishwasher, I made myself scarce as I left again to change. I still had fifteen minutes left of my break, which was plenty of time to get changed and use the bathroom.
Entering the death-trap elevator, I held onto the bar as it went up. The box was quiet, the usual soft music not playing today. I frowned, eying the speaker. One thing I noticed since coming to the land of technology was how unreliable it was.
Arriving on my floor, I left the death trap eagerly and made my way to the bedroom. Stripping off my shirt, I placed into the wash basket and took a clean one out of the drawer. The first one I grabbed was one of Asra's that I had stolen and I sniffed it before putting it back. His scent still lingered in the fibres, and I'll be damned if I ruin that with the sweaty, salty stench of the kitchen during dinner.
Taking a simple t-shirt that was tight enough to not get in my way, I slid it over my head and readjusted my hair. I made quick work of my bathroom activities and made sure everything was in order before going to leave the room. The moment my hand wrapped around the handle, there was a dull clatter from nearby.
I paused, cocking my head as I focused on the noise. I heard a faint murmur of what sounded like fear, followed by a deep growl. There was another clatter of something hitting the floor, my ears somehow picking it up.
It wasn't until I heard my sister pleading did I realise something was going on.
I yanked the door open, running my way down the hall and stairs. When I reached her room, the door was shut, but I could hear a commotion inside. I made quick work of entering Arabella's code, grateful she gave me it in her confidence.
Pushing the door open, I was about to ask if everything was okay when the sight before me had my blood boil. My sister, pressed against the wall, was shaking like a leaf, as a wolf cornered her. I could practically see red, my knuckles clenching tightly as my breath hitched.
My jaw ached with how hard I was clenching it, and I didn't need a moment longer to catch my bearings and charge forward.
Taking the large male by the bicep, I yanked him backwards, my voice full of so much loathing.
"What the fuck do you think you are doing!?"
