Chapter 9: Jimmy Casket
{Long chapter}
"Toast! What did I tell you about making macaroni in the sink!?" I heard Ghost yell from upstairs. I sharply took a deep breath in and held my breath for a few seconds.
"Someone's in trouble," I mumbled to myself as the scolding continued.
"But, sir! The costumers like it better that way!" Toast argued.
"In my sink!? I own the place! Can't you do that in your mansion or something!? What if the police found the macaroni in my sink? They would think I made it!" Ghost replied. I walked up the stairs and watched them argue for a few moments. They looked like an old married couple.
"Really, Toast, sink macaroni? Try using a cast iron pot and adding garlic next time," I said shaking my head at him.
"Wait, you're still here?" Toast asked looking a little worried.
"Since when did you know anything about macaroni?" Ghost questioned.
"To Toast, yes I'm still here. I'm going with you on the investigation, and to Ghost, I used to deal macaroni and skittles in high school to pay for the investigations I did. I'm not proud, but I have no place to judge," I explained. Ghost's jaw dropped, and Toast started staring at him, then at me, then at him again, and then he finally stopped at me and smiled.
"She's totally your soul-mate, sir," Toast said. Ghost closed his mouth and face-palmed while blushing.
"Just, get in the car Johnny," Ghost said in a deep tone. Toast immediately left the bathroom, and went downstairs.
"Get in the car Johnny," I mocked in an equally deep tone. He looked at me dead in the eyes, and we stared for a couple moments before giggling like school girls.
"Why is that funny?" I asked trying to hold back my laughter.
"I have no idea," Ghost admitted, also trying not to laugh. When we got to the car, Toast was sitting in the passenger seat, and I sat in the back. Ghost started driving, and he looked at me through the rearview mirror. We started giggling again, and Toast looked at the two of us like we were crazy.
"What's so funny?" He asked. Ghost and I burst into laughter. "I don't get it," Toast continued. I started laughing even more, while Ghost was calming himself down so he could focus on the road.
"I honestly don't know," I said between breaths. We arrived at the house a couple moments later, passing mine on the way. It was still a crime scene. They seemed to be taking some photos for legal reasons, I guess. It feels like all of that happened a lifetime ago and maybe that's just because of all the time I've had to myself not being busy. Who knows? When we got to the house, Ghost knocked, and Gertrude from the store opened the door. (I'm making sick rhymes by accident. Sorry...)
"Oh, thank goodness you're here! Sally hasn't been sleeping and-" She cut herself off when she saw me. "(Y/n)! It's great to see you! How have you been doing? I heard you got robbed, and then saw a dead body on the way to the station! Are you working with P.I.E now?" she said all at once.
"Um, I've been good, and yes to both of those other questions," I said. She kept going for a while after letting us in.
"Gertrude!" Ghost exclaimed to get her attention.
"Yes?" She asked.
"Take everyone out to the backyard, and stay there until we take care of the problem, okay?" He said pointing to the back door.
"Well, I can take the kids, but I can't take Acachalla," She replied.
"Why not?" Ghost asked.
"Because he's tied to the ceiling," She said as she pointed to the ceiling above the kitchen. Acachalla was chewing on an Oreo in his mouth while he was hanging upside down.
"Don't ask," He said chewing on the Oreo. Ghost shook his head and walked upstairs. I followed him to what I assumed was Sally's room. It was kind of creepy to be honest. Downstairs I heard Gertrude and Toast taking the kids outside while I looked at the scratch marks on the walls.
"It looks like a level 52 was here at some point and ruined her room," I said. Ghost looked around and shrugged.
"Yes, and no," He started, "Sally is a level 52 demon, and she likes her room like this." My eyes widened.
"Why would this family take her in? Don't they know she could kill them if she doesn't get what she wants!?" I asked. He shrugged again.
"Once again, yes and no, it's really hard to explain the Acachallas to someone new," He said. I shook my head and pretended the room looked fine. Ghost found the spot the portal was opening and closing. We tried to get it to close, but something from the other side grabbed my arm. I quickly pulled away, but it scratched my arm pretty badly. I hissed in pain and put pressure on the spot I was injured. Blood from arm dripped on the bright pink carpet, and stained it dark red with every drop that touched it.
"(Y/n)!" Ghost exclaimed, "A-Are you okay!?"
"Yeah, I'm fine," I said, "It's probably not as bad as it looks."
"A-Are you s-sure?" He stuttered. I tied a scarf I found on the floor over the wound.
"Ghost, I'm okay," I assured, "It's just a scratch. Are you okay?" He twitched nervously.
"I-I think so," He responded. Something was wrong, but whatever it was he wasn't going to tell me.
We closed the portal, and he seemed a little better. Toast asked to see my arm, but I refused considering the way Ghost's face went pale when he mentioned blood. Gertrude paid us while Acachalla was yelling about Government, taxes, and spaghetti. Ghost asked Toast to drive because he wasn't feeling well. I asked him what was wrong, but he ignored me. Toast told me not to take it personally. He gets terrible migraines, and doesn't want to talk to anyone. Ghost told Toast to shut up after Toast explained what was wrong.
"Johnny?" Ghost asked.
"Yes, sir?" Toast replied. Ghost put a hand on his head.
"I think you need to..." He paused for a second, "... Pull over." Toast stopped at the end of a block, near an alley. Ghost quickly got out, and nearly tripped over himself, before falling to his knees, and holding his head.
"Ghost?" I asked as I got out of the car.
"Stay... Ha... Back!" He replied. I came closer to him.
"(Y/n), I think you should get back in the car," Toast said franticly. I ignored him and put my hand on Ghost's shoulder.
"Ghost?" I asked.
"Ha... No... N-No!" He screamed. I jumped back. Ghost slowly stood, his face turned away from me. I stepped back.
"(Y/n), get in the car, NOW," Toast urged.
"Ghost?' I repeated, taking a few more steps back. He twitched, and seemed to be holding back laughter.
"Didn't I just say, no?" He asked, his voice higher pitched and insane.
"This isn't funny!" I exclaimed, "Why won't you look at me!?" He burst into maniacal laughter.
"Well," He started darkly, "I guess it's not a secret to you anymore!" He put emphasis on the word "Secret".
"What do you mean?" I asked, reaching for the handle to the door. He looked directly at me; his eyes were blood red, insanity clearly had taken over his mind.
"I'M JIMMY CASKET!" He said as he lunged with his knife towards the hand I hand on the door. I jumped away and ran. My whole world seemed to be falling apart.
"No, please no," I said to myself while I ran, tears running down my cheeks. I looked behind for a split second and saw him there, right behind me, reaching his hand out to grab me.
"No, no, no, no, no!" I cried as I ran faster. I kept running, a dead end ahead, I quickly studied the corner and knew what to do. I ran up the corner of the wall and jumped over him, falling into a roll, cutting my leg on a shard of glass in the alley. I yelled in pain and continued to run, despite the pain in my leg slowing down my run. I knew I wasn't going to outrun him, but maybe someone could be around, and help me.
"Aren't you a spry one?" He laughed.
"Leave me alone!" I screamed back. I looked down at my leg for a second, and saw it pouring out blood. I kept moving until the world started spinning, numbness taking over my body. I fell limply to the ground, the last seconds I was conscious, I saw him standing over me. He grabbed me by the hair, and looked me in the eyes. He put his knife against my neck, and then I was welcomed by an infinite blackness.
