Zara
I felt like dancing!
My sheer ecstasy was oozing down from my body, threatening to break down into a full-on celebration mode in front of Leila. I was right! Leila possessed the power too but when am I ever wrong? I'm the brilliant person in the trio.
I would have jumped like a gazelle if only Leila wasn't sporting me that desperate and worried look, expecting to get more information about her daughter. I struggled to suppress my grin, after a complete minute of trying, I decided to fill in her about the wicked witch. If what I'm doubting was right, Leila will be able to track Aini down.
"I'll tell you about your daughter's whereabouts but first, I need some answers from you," I asserted. She was hesitant but hey, I wanted her to spill the beans before I vomit mine!
"What do you want to know?" She asked unwillingly.
"How can you see me?"
"I don't know, I can see gho-"
"What do you mean you don't know? Here I was thinking, you were the ticket to save Aini but here we go, you don't even know about the power you possess," I started complaining, my hope slowly breaking, I continued ranting, "why are you and your daughter this dumb? You guys don't even have a clue why these powers were gifted to you two, I can't believe it!"
"Aini can see ghosts?" Leila inquired quickly, urgh, seriously?! This family is stupidest to the extent of all the stupidity in the world to ever exist!
What am I gonna do with them?
"You and your daughter make a perfect pair, congratulations!" I clapped encouragingly, I knew I was overreacting but what can I do, I'm stuck! I'm literally screwed, my best friend's boyfriend was drowning in self-pity while her mother knows nothing about her daughter, wow!
"Your sarcasm isn't going to help us, Zara, why don't you take a seat and tell me what's wrong?" She spoke firmly as if she has been dealing with this kind of thing every day.
I took a deep breath, Leila sat on the bed and patted the spot next to her, I sat and started, "Aini can see me, that's the answer to your question but ghosts, I don't think so. As far as I know, she can only see me and the wicked witch."
"Okay, now who is the wicked witch, as you like to put it?" She inquired, all business.
"She is a ghost, wicked and a dangerous ghost," I let out.
"That's clear, but Zara, who is she?" She asked slowly, adding a little pressure to the pronunciation as if she was talking to a toddler.
At that moment, sitting next to Leila, being inquired, indeed made me feel like an elementary grade kid, waiting for her admission interview.
"Since the day Aini foresaw my death, she had weird dreams, nightmares actually but that's not the point, the thing is she saw the girl from her nightmare in real life, and then boom! she went missing," I replied.
Leila struggled to not yell, her face contorting in - irritation? I couldn't tell why. She clenched and unclenched her hands and spoke, "Zara, you need to tell me everything, by everything I mean from the beginning till the end and don't, don't miss a single detail," she said strongly and looked at me, I nodded at her, she approved my response and continued, "so Aini can see the future? what else should I know about my daughter?"
So that's what I did, I filled her in about Aini's first experience at her power to my death and our hospital mission to how she summoned me, well that was still quite a mystery for us but I said that too, I told her about Aini dreams and how I played a part in the wicked witch's plan until how she finally appeared in real life and took Aini away, jeopardizing all our lives.
She was silent for a long time, but that was expected. The information I provided was quite a lot to take in the same go but she needed to know and a part of me was angry at Leila, angry for not being available for her daughter, for not being the supporting parental figure when Aini suffered from all of this but I'm grateful for Anne, alteast Anne was the only right decision Leila made in Aini's life.
When silence faded, Leila spoke again, "so what did you find about your mystery guy?"
"The fact that I was killed?" I retorted and regretted it immediately, I couldn't be angry at Leila for my injustice.
I sighed and continued, "I investigated on the matter but I focused a lot on the matter at hand, but it is fine, I cleared half of the mess," I answered dismissively. I wanted to tell the truth about my supposed boyfriend to Aini and Harry before I tell anyone but first, we need to get Aini back and the rest can wait.
"What do you mean by you cleared the mess?" She asked suspiciously.
What? Now she can read minds?
She pestured more, "Zara what did you do?"
There was no point in hiding, so I decided to spill, "I found out that the driver was a part of the plan, the accident, the drunken driver was all staged, they did it to take me to the hospital, so when I went in search of Aini, the day she disappeared, I was angry, angry for everything and that was the moment, I saw him, the one who drove that car purposefully, don't ask me why I did it but if you ask me if I enjoyed it? That, of course, yes I enjoyed it very much."
Leila's face morphed in horror, disbelief, and something like - fear? But I had the most satisfactory smirk sporting my lips.
"You killed him!" She announced, it wasn't a question, she realized it pretty quick.
I bobbed my head in acknowledgment but kept quiet, I wasn't proud of it but it was adequate and the happiness I felt when I sliced his neck scared me, it wasn't much of a surprise when Leila shook vehemently in fear at the news.
At the end of the day, I realized one thing, never go in search of something that will only cause you pain.
I still remember, cornering him in his rugged, rusty apartment that was equivalent to the size of a mailbox. It was so much fun when he was driving me to his lonely apartment with me right next to him in his car, it took great self-restraint to not kill him at that moment and a little pity, it was my first murder, I couldn't bring myself to do it.
I only wanted to scare him first, give him a broken nose or leg perhaps? That was all I wanted and planned when I was sharing the same drive with him but I gave up on my plan when he got a call from the unknown, ordering for him to stage a similar accident to a girl unbeknownst to me and the fact that their next was a girl of sixteen undid my boundaries.
He settled immediately to work on his laptop as soon as he entered, checking the girl's picture in the mail sent by someone named 'boss', and a bio sent below the picture, it read -
Leena Evans
16
Goodwill high school
Walks home from college at 4 pm
Address- 4th Avenue.
Deadline - Three days from the moment this mail was received.
We will call you when the target should be approached, until then you are not to contact us.
And he opened another mail announcing that the advance settlement has been made to his account for the mission, that was then I realized how dangerous they are, their presence destroyed the lives of the innocent, and I knew that I had to kill them, each of them when I get a chance.
My anger did half the fear constructive behavior, from the blinking of lights to all the electricity horrors. The driver was a middle-aged, strong-built man, his looks scream brutal but when the lights when completely off, he screamed, he screamed like a kid screaming while watching Annebelle.
Everything in the house started to shake, the water glass from the table fell on the tiled floor, shattering into million pieces in the process. I stilled a second to see how these things are happening when I calmed the shaking stopped and everything turned normal and that's when I realized that I was the one causing the commotion, and the fact that the powers were stimulated by emotion brought it a new wave of confidence.
The driver was shivering in fear, "who are you? Come in front of me, you coward!" He screamed, my anger took control of me, that bitch had the gut to call me a coward when he was the coward, I regretted the fact that he can't see me but that only added the increasing fear every second, I looked at his laptop, his laptop went flying towards him and hit his face with full force.
A small cut formed from the hit and blood started coming out of it, which satisfied me. A million ideas were forming inside my head, different ways to kill and torment him but my anger overrode my senses from creating a drama and I automatically glared at the knife placed at the kitchen counter, the knife stormed on his way equivalent to my temper and stopped near his neck.
Stating he was terrified was an understatement, if only I could have done this one more time, recreating the fear repeatedly, he would have simply died in a heart attack, which would be a perfect cover story but no, I wanted to do this messily, I wanted his death to appear in the news, I wanted his partners to get suspicious of the brutal killing and fear their fates.
I channeled the knife towards his right hand, slicing the skin of his palms, the palm that drove the car, killing dozens of innocent. I traveled the knife upwards, to his elbows to his collar bones leisurely, taking my time with the special treatment while leaving a bloody trail on his body. he screamed, cursed in pain, and finally begged for mercy. his sobs turned into pitiful hiccups, his voice died to a soft whimper but I haven't had enough, I brought the knife upwards to his face and carved a line running from his forehead to the right cheek.
A fresh set of tears and screams filled the apartment but it was fine, the place was pretty much empty as it was situated far from the city, and the apartment! the apartment was almost vacated, half the building was falling off, it was the perfect place for a murderer like him to plot his mission but most importantly it was a perfect place for crimes and brutal killing like this.
The memories of my accident flashed across my mind, the blood and the screams of my two best friends, Aini wouldn't appreciate my action, and the thought of disapproval from my best friend hazed my mind, faltering my action, and the picture of Leena filled my eyes, and the bit of humanity that covered my senses faded and with a quick whip of the knife at the driver's neck, I finished him off.
"You are a murderer!" Leila accused, breaking me out of my flashback.
"I have my reasons," I simply claimed and brushed the topic off.
Not in a million years will I confess my first murder to Leila, nor anyone, Aini and Harry will be the only exception. Other than that anyone who knows that I've killed can think anything they like about my actions.
People judge all the time but who does that is the only thing that matters, but most importantly why you did what you did was the only thing that suffices, nothing else.
