Chapter one: What its like to be me
Evangeline's POV:
Insomnia sucks. If I know one thing it's that insomnia sucks. Don't get me wrong I like to be able to see the night sky and all the beauty about it but I would also like to sleep.
I like sleep for one reason. Not that I am well rested once I wake up, no. I like it because it's the closest thing i can get to being dead while still being alive. Oh wow the edge I know.
I was on my back looking at the ceiling. I was staring at the glow in the dark star stickers stuck up there from the last girl who was in this room. She was nine when she got adopted. She was one of the lucky ones. I heard her new family took her and moved to California.
Another thing that sucks is how I can never be picked as one of life's favorites. She was nine and she got adopted here I am 14 year old evangeline who can't do anything right.
I sit up and make my way to the bathroom not being able to stand my morning breath anymore. I look in the mirror. My shoulder length light brown hair is all poofy and everywhere and I have dark rings under my eyes from my lack of sleep. My skin is still pale and I kind of look like a vampire all I need are some pointy teeth and a weird accent and I'll be a whole transylvanian package!
Beep beep beep
Welp, there goes my alarm signifying it being 6:30. I finish brushing my teeth, ugh I really need to buy a different kind of toothpaste. I'll just add that to my list of things.
I get the clothes that I had put on top of the chest at the foot of my bed the night before. The chest isnt mine it, along with the stars belonged to the girl before me. It's old, dusty, and has pictures that you could very clearly tell a child younger than the age of ten had drawn on. But it's good for extra storage and hiding things I know miss Hannigan would never allow.
Ah yes, miss Hannigan I forgot to mention her didn't I? Miss Hannigan runs the group home I'm stuck in. Her name isn't really miss Hannigan but the theater girls started calling her that.
I finish off my outfit with a scarf I had gotten for christmas from Kade. We'll get to him later. Christmas was just two weeks ago so we were into the new year, 2016! A year for greatness, or for others, for people like me another year of disappointment. Though you get used to it.. at some point.
I sit on my bed and decide to wake up Kade since I know hes still sleeping. Its Sunday but hey, I don't feel like being up alone and when you live in a group home like mine you know not to wake up anyone unless you feel like losing a couple teeth. You see my group home consists of ages 7-16. It's an all girl group home but that doesnt mean you still aren't at risk of getting beat until you lose consciousness.
Back to Kade, I decide to spam him with something I know he hates... Musical lyrics. He's not a theater kid which is a disappointment considering how much I talk about musicals he should consider becoming one if he wants to try and hold a full conversation with me.
"You have invented a new kind of stupid. A damage you can never undo kind of stupid. An open all the cages to a zoo kind a stupid. TRULY you didnt think this through? KIND OF STUPID!"
I laugh a bit to myself wondering his reaction when he sees this. Pretty sure he's never listened to congratulations so he might freak out and think hes done something wrong. Just then my phone buzzes:
"Oh gosh.. what did I do this time? Are you mad because I took all those selfies in your camera?"
Wait.. what's he talking about? I open my gallery to find exactly what he said. It seems like pictures of just him making weird faces. I have the urge to murder him but also to laugh. My phone buzzes again.
"Also what's up with the being up at 6:53 on a SUNDAY!? Excuse me ma'am but some of us like to sleep. Not everyone is a vampire like you ya psycho!"
I shoot back:
"Excuse me for feeling lonely and wanting a friend to find comfort in on this dark and lonely sunday morning."
"You're always so dramatic, take it down a notch girl."
Light started to pour into the small window above my shelf. I put my shiny things on the shelf so the light will reflect off of them and make them look magical.
"What time should I meet you at your Cafe?"
I ask.
Kade only has his mom. It's been just them for 11 years. His dad left because he found a better women with a set of twins. He went off to live the perfect life with the perfect family and left his biological child and poor wife in a broken home.
"Come at around 9-10. I need to be fully awake so I can kick your butt once you're here."
Hes so rude. But I love him for that ya know in a friend way.
The cafe they own isnt big it's actually really small but its allows them to make enough money to pay bills and get them the essential needs to survive.
More lights flicker on in the hallway and I know it's time to start the day. I slip my phone into my pocket and clean anything in my room that would make miss hannigan go into one of her hissy fits about the importance of being newt and clean.
I make my way in the hall and desperately try to find any group of girls I know I can talk with. It's best to get into a group as quickly as possible before the older girls decide they need a punching bag for the day.
Just then I hear a loud crash and a scream following it. I know exactly what that means and I dont want to be around for it. Just then I see the theater trio. It's a group of girls consisting of a short blonde girl around 13, another blonde who's a bit freakishly tall who's 14, and then another 14 year old with jet black hair.
I wouldnt consider myself their friend but more of an acquaintance. The small blondes name is Carmen, shes from the south and you can tell by her accent which she claims she doesnt have. The tall blonde is Delaney, born in Virginia but koved to New York when she was around 3 years old is what she says. And the the black haired girl is May. She is super sweet and was born in New York like me! She is 14 as well. They are the theater trio. I guess you know why they are considered my acquaintances now.
"Eve! Did you hear the crash too?" Carmen asked.
"How could I not? I literally came from the direction it came from." I reply it sounded a bit rude than I intended it to but these girls know how I am.
"Who do you think it was?" May asks to no one in particular.
"My guess is Cheryl and Mick. They always have to pick a fight with someone and it's usually the smaller children. And that scream sounded like it came from one of the younger kids." Delaney liked to make predictions and usually they were right. And like always this one was correct.
Cheryl and Mick came out of the hallway dragging a scared 11 year old behind them. She had black eye and bruises that were obviously just made. Poor thing will probably be stuck with those monsters all day.
I check my phone and realise if I want to make it to the cafe by 9 I should get going. I say by to the Theater Trio and start walking up the street. The cafe and 4 blocks away and I'm a slow walker so I make my way up the street at 7:50.

The cafe sign comes into my view and I check my phone. Its 8:57 so I made it just in time. Their cafe doesnt have some huge name up in lights. It's not something you would hear people talk about in food reviews and stuff. It's just "double k cafe". Its called that because Kade and his moms name both start with K. His mom's name is Karla and she is one of the best people you will ever meet.
I walk in the door and a sweet candy scent fills my nose. Oh I love it here. I feel myself being lifted off the ground and is developed into a hug.
"Hi Kade" I say. "Hello small psycho" he replies.
"Kade put the girl down. I'm pretty sure she likes being connected to the ground." Karla says from behind the counter. Shes been like a mom to me ever since the.. the incident. I'm pretty sure she would have adopted me if it weren't for their money being so tight.
"Mom, me and Eve are going to sit around back so come get me if we get a customer." Kade says as hes pulling me out the door.
We make out way around the back of the building and sit on the gravel. I'm lucky to live in a very spacious part of the city most people would call it the "ghetto" which I think is pretty funny.
Me and Kade joke around for a bit and gently punch each other in the shoulder while being way to over dramatic about it.
"Oh right Eve I have some news!" Kade says suddenly.
I look at him a bit confused but nod for him to go on.
"We're moving."
That's the only thing I hear before I take off running.

I've been helping my brother move and really wanted to think of a good storyline for this lol. Feel free to give me your thoughts. Constructive criticism is always something I welcome. I know I need improvement lol
