Chapter 7: You Need to Find Yourself a Girl, Mate

For a few weeks, school became something Nora rushed through so she could go spend all her time at Disney, grateful for once to have a friend to enjoy it with. Not that she had to be at the parks with someone—she was pretty content by herself. But still, for once it was nice to have someone to experience it all with that understood why she loved it so much.

Not to mention Levi was easy to be around. While most everyone else always seemed to have an agenda, Levi didn't. He'd have maybe one or two things he wanted to do, but if the line was too long or if Nora wasn't super interested, he usually dropped it. It was very rare he was adamant about wanting to do certain things and, when he was, it was normally because he knew something Nora didn't. Like that they were filming for marketing that day and they could maybe be in the background, or they were having soft openings for a new attraction, or he wanted to point out some sort of random tidbit that he didn't think she knew.

"Did you know that the two sides of Epcot, Future World East and Future World West, are designed specifically to reflect their themes? East is based off technology, so the corners of walkways are sharp and planters are all angular, while the West side focuses on nature, so there are a lot more water features and everything is smooth, giving off a more peaceful vibe."

Or, "The Tower of Terror actually pulls the elevator down, which was technology that didn't exist before it was made because, well, since when does anyone want an elevator to fall?"

Or, "Joe Rohde was the Imagineer behind the development behind the Animal Kingdom. He wanted to make sure the park looked like someplace you could visit in real life, where even a wall could tell a story."

She normally knew, but she normally acted like she didn't because she liked the way his lip quirked to the side when he thought he'd impressed her. It wasn't immature or bigheaded, but sweet and cute in the quiet way Levi always was, prideful of being a Disney nerd.

Which was why she liked him so much.

A giant groan stretched its way towards her ears. She looked up from her cinnamon roll to find Gaston making a muscle pose.

Great. "You do not take a hint."

"Hello to you too, gorgeous." Gaston sat, yes sat, at her table, eyebrows waggling. "You're the one in my tavern, little lady. You come in here at least once a week to pine."

Nora leaned back in her chair, arms crossed. "You, sir, are not a cinnamon roll, which means I am not here for you."

"I know you were thinking of me before I sat down. You had a dreamy little smile."

She wanted to sink underneath the table. "I was thinking of my cinnamon roll."

Gaston put a fist under his chin, attempting thoughtfulness. "Mhmm. Sure." He leaned over to the table next to them, talking behind his hand to the elderly woman seated there. "She's playing hard to get."

"Do we have to have this conversation every time we meet?"

"Only until you admit that you're in love with me."

"Fine." Nora leaned forward, batting her eyes. "I'm hopelessly in love with you."

He paused for a second. "That was actually very believable." He hit the table with a fist. "It must be true."

Nora sighed. "Keep dreaming, Gaston."

She picked up her trash, heading out before he could stop her to go find a much quieter place. Still, talking to Gaston usually did make her day. It was nice to know that there was at least one girl out there who wasn't going to salivate over him. She'd hate being a face character after seeing what Gaston and Captain Jack went through.

At the thought of her favorite pirate, she decided to go see how he was doing. She tried to stick to only visiting him once a day, hoping she wasn't coming off as obsessive. She thought about him more often than she'd tell anyone, and usually tried to slip in that she was visiting a bunch of other characters that day so it came across as her loving characters in general, not as loving him.

Definitely not loving him.

"Hi, lad. What's your name?"

"William."

"William." Levi cocked his head to the side, wriggling fingers coming to a halt. "As in William Turner?"

"No, I'm William Jones."

"Like Davy Jones?"

"Yeah."

"What a coincidence," he said to the parents. "You combine the two things William Turner is together." He tapped his chin, a smile appearing. "Did the lady have a bit of an infatuation with Mr. Turner?"

She gave a sheepish grin. Her husband shoved her shoulder playfully.

"How unfortunate, love. I'm the real star." He gestured to his attraction. "You don't see William in there. He's too busy ferrying ghosts."

"I'm not fairing ghosts," little William said, obviously lost.

Levi clapped his hands. "You bet you're not. You have much more important things to do." He squatted down, hoping to give William more attention as he signed his autograph book. "Like piracy."

"How do I become a pirate?"

"Ah, a first timer." Levi handed the book back and stroked his mustache, eying the five year old William. "There aren't too many requirements, but to be a good pirate? That is key. You must be good with a sword." He pretended to wield one. "You must be part of a crew. And you must be very fond of treasure."

"I can do all those things!" William said.

"Then will you join my crew, dear William?"

"Heck yeah!"

He had to force himself not to laugh. "Wonderful. Welcome aboard. I've been missing a William. And a Jones. You know, one that is on my side and not sending a kraken after me."

"What's a quacken?"

"Sounds like a giant duck, doesn't it?" Levi pondered momentarily, hoping to make sure to be honest but kid friendly. "A kraken is a giant sea monster that has the arms of an octopus. But don't worry, mate. He's long gone. Nothing to worry about when you have me as a captain. Besides, you're a courageous pirate."

William puffed his chest out. "Yes I am."

"Splendid. Want to get our portrait together?"

Levi took a deep breath, glancing at his line again. His brother, Sam, had told him he'd be stopping by today with their youngest cousin, Thomas, who was going through a phase where he loved pirates. He was also five, the baby of the baby of the family, and Levi had let the two use his guest passes.

He was nervous as Gibbs with a crew full of women, each sporting a black spot. His parents had offered to come visit him at work, but he'd found it too embarrassing and distracting to have them trying to dote on Jack Sparrow, even if they knew not to act like they knew him or take away any of the magic for the guests. A slip could get him in some serious trouble.

He trusted Sam more to be casual, but he wasn't sure if Thomas knew he was Jack Sparrow or not. He was hoping no, considering the whole point was to let kids meet Jack Sparrow, not their cousin dressed as Jack Sparrow. It wasn't the same thing at all and he didn't want Thomas to miss out on being a normal guest when he was young enough to have a pretty good time with the whole make believing thing.

Then again, some kids grew up too fast and some adults never grew up at all.

He thought of Nora instantly and smiled.

After another interaction, he saw Sam and Thomas get in the back of the line. They were a bit late considering they normally cut the line to make sure guests didn't have to stand in a line for nothing if he was going to take a break until the next scheduled time, but it hadn't been that long considering it was the middle of the week.

But then he noticed someone behind them. A lone guest. With a Pirates of the Caribbean themed mouse ear headband, who instantly took interest in the little boy in front of her and began chatting with Sam and Thomas.

He couldn't even swear in his head for fear of being anti-Disney.

The entire next guest interaction was done automatically, going through basic questions and easy Jack script he knew by heart as he thought, Why is she here? Why did they have to be here at the same time? What are they talking about? He wouldn't randomly tell a stranger I'm his brother, right? Even a pretty stranger? Right?

Nora hopped in line right as the Cast Member was cutting it off. She immediately wiped her brow, feeling a bit self-conscious considering she'd practically ran to his line. He had more meet and greets scheduled that day, but she may as well come visit him if she had the chance to.

Plus she wanted to show off the new ears she'd bought on Etsy. She hoped he liked them.

Nora was so glad blushes could potentially be assumed to be sunburn at Disney. Not that anywhere else on her was red, which would be easy to tell considering she had pretty short hair and a tank top on.

To get her mind off her sudden nerves, Nora looked at everyone in line. Jack was talking to a tween girl, which could make for some very interesting, awkward conversations considering that was the age where kids wanted to pretend they weren't interested, or just felt character greets were weird. Her mom had overtaken the whole conversation, mixing in some obvious lecture-like sentences in Spanish every once and a while when her daughter barely twitched when Jack asked her something, even though he was being awfully polite.

Because of course he was. Sigh.

The next thing she noticed was the guy and kid in front of her. The guy looked a lot like Levi, except a bit bulkier and older. It was a weird mix, someone that was probably near his mid-20's and a five year old together. The kid was wearing a Mickey Mouse t-shirt, which was an obvious conversation starter.

"I love your shirt," she said enthusiastically.

He barely turned to look at her. "Thanks." Then turned back, mouth open. "Are those pirate ears?"

"You bet!"

His brother, or whoever he was, had been really focused on Jack. He looked at her for the first time. "Wow, those are cool."

She gave a fake curtsy. "I'm hoping the captain likes him."
"He's pretty cool, isn't he?" the guy mused.

"He's my favorite. Character, that is," Nora admitted, tacking the last part on to make it less personal.

She didn't want to act like there was more than one Jack Sparrow. She did not break Disney rules. Well, not most of them at least.

"Yeah, he's mine too." The way his eyes lit up wasn't normal when it came to looking at Jack Sparrow. It was almost prideful.

It almost looked like he loved Jack Sparrow.

Well, that could explain why Jack didn't seem interested in her. Not that he would be interested in guests anyway.

She looked over at Jack, whose eyes kept roaming over to them, obviously distracted. Normally he didn't seem so panicked when it was just her. But why would he be panicked?

She had to keep her mouth shut. She lowered her voice. "Do you guys know each other?"

He lowered his voice too. "Yeah. That's my brother."

Everything seemed to freeze.

This time, she stared at this guy. This is what Jack potentially looked like without the makeup. And, better yet, she had a connection to him now. A connection that wasn't his boyfriend.

Nora blinked several times. "I'm surprised you told me that. I thought it was kind of...taboo?"

He shrugged. "I mean, you're obviously an AP holder. I rarely come to the parks. I just wanted to show some support. Doubt I'll be back for at least a year."

She didn't understand those people who could come so rarely, so long as they had the money, or a Cast Member for a sibling, and it was right down the road.

"Does he know?" Nora asked, pointing with her head towards the kid.

The guy rubbed the back of his neck. "I told him and I probably shouldn't have. It kind of slipped out. He's skeptical and thinks I'm lying."

Nora bit her tongue. She wouldn't have told a five year old that. She wouldn't have let it slip. She also would have told this kid all about protocol when it came to not calling his brother or whoever he was anything but Jack.

So she decided to do that in a way that wasn't overstepping, which was really annoying because she could easily get the name of her crush from this kid and he'd be none the wiser. "Hi. What's your name?"

"Thomas."

"Hi, Thomas. I'm Nora. I'm also Captain Jack Sparrow's very secret spy."

Thomas looked very skeptical. "Jack doesn't have spies."

"That's just what he wants you to think. Now, I hear that you know some secrets about Jack Sparrow. I just wanted to let you know that these other kids in line, and even the adults, don't know the things you know. So you have to be really careful not to spill the beans. You're Captain Jack's secret spy now too."

Thomas considered this thoughtfully. "Do you know his secret?"

Nora hesitated. "It's best not to tell secrets, even among spies. Just in case we know different ones."

He nodded. They'd moved up a place in line by this point, though two families were still in front of them. "Sam says that's him, but he looks different."

Sam. That was the name of Levi's brother. He even looked like Levi. Nora glanced at Sam, lips thinning. Sam was a pretty popular name, so it could just be a coincidence. Because of course it was a coincidence. Levi worked custodial services. He said he was always on bathroom duty, which was why she was never able to see him around. It made perfect sense to her and he rarely talked about his job considering cleaning toilets and Code V wasn't exactly something that makes for great conversation.

But still, it was really, really weird that this guy who looked so much Levi who had the same name of Levi's brother (who she hadn't met) just so happened to claim he was brothers with Jack Sparrow.

She just didn't know why Levi would have any reason to lie about who he was. Sure, characters had really strict rules about not telling people what they did for the parks, but Levi and her had been hanging out for a while and he hadn't said anything related to Jack Sparrow. No, she hadn't seen them both at the same place at once, but she trusted Levi enough to know he was telling the truth.

Right?

Nora almost crossed her arms, but didn't want to look too suspicious.

"I'm Nora, by the way," she said to Sam.

He shook her hand. "Sam."

She almost wanted to ask for a last name, but that would be weird. There wasn't any recognition in his eyes to her name. Which meant that if he was Levi's brother, he didn't know she existed. Which meant Levi, if he was Jack Sparrow, which was crazy talk, didn't talk about his new best friend.

But, as she said, it was crazy talk. Plenty of guys had brown hair. Plenty of guys were named Sam. And, if he seriously was Levi's brother, that meant Levi was lying about who he was. And why would he do that? Besides, Levi was super shy and not like Jack at all. They couldn't possibly be the same person.

That didn't make the irritated chill go away.

Finally, it was Thomas and Sam's turn. Nora watched like a hawk.

Levi had never sweated so much in his life. Nora, as usual, had wormed her way into someone's life, getting Sam and Thomas talking. He didn't like how mesmerized Sam looked whenever he looked at him, as if Levi was just so amazing. He didn't like the way Thomas looked really skeptical, as if he knew. And, most of all, he didn't like Nora's narrow eyes that kept darting from Sam to him.

Bugga wasn't going to cover the amount of trouble he seemed to be in.

"Ah, new acquaintances." He placed his hands on his hips, peering down at Thomas. "What's your name?"

Thomas looked incredibly confused about this, as if they'd been introduced before. "Thomas."

"And how are you enjoying your day at the Magic Kingdom, Thomas?"

"It's pretty good." Thomas was one of those kids who was really hard to impress, which was one reason he'd wanted Sam to avoid telling him his identity.

"And what's your favorite thing you've done today?"

"I liked Splash Mountain," he said matter-of-factly. "And Nora said I was a spy, so that was pretty cool."

Ursula's tentacles, what had she done? "A spy? That sounds very top secret."

"Well, not for you."

Not secret for him? He looked at Nora again, eyes flashing in fear. She remained stoic, which wasn't like her at all. Whatever little game she'd been playing with him, she didn't fill him in, which also wasn't like her at all.

"So you can be a pirate and a spy?" he asked. "That's very fortuitous."

"Exactly," Thomas said, as if he knew what fortuitous meant.

"You have a very nice corner here, Captain Jack," Sam said casually, pointing out his cool pirate gear surrounding them.

"A corner? I have a ship. An attraction. The world is my oyster." If Nora wasn't standing right there, he would have added he wasn't doing so poorly in the lady department either, but didn't dare to now.

Not that they were dating or anything really resembling dating. Wow, it was hot today.

"That's right it is," Sam said. "Can I have a hug?"

Sam gave him one before he could ask, patting him on the back firmly. Levi blushed.

"Hey, later can we all get ice cream? Sam promised," Thomas said, clearly done with the whole meeting.

"Sure thing. The captain might not have time later," Sam replied. "He has plenty to do on the Black Pearl and all."

He hoped his eyes were grateful enough. "I'm sure your family gathering will be the talk of Tortuga. If I had any gold, your ice cream social would be on me."

"Wouldn't that be something." Sam grinned. "I'm pretty sure Gibbs usually pays for you."

"Don't be too flattering. Gibbs would be no where without me."

"And a lot happier too, I bet."

Levi rolled his eyes. "Did you want a portrait?"

"Wouldn't miss it. It's going in the living room."

Oh, joy.

They took pictures and, with one last suspicious look from Thomas, they went their own way.

Which is when Nora approached, her air intimidating and almost cold.

"Why do you look ready to become Blackbeard?" he asked.

"I was chatting with your friends in line and it was just...." Her eyes flicked away. "I don't know anything except that, not that this is canon, there's a fanfiction out there about you having a brother."

He wanted to go find Sam and shake him. "Aye. I've read that. He's not good at pirating, that one. Or any form of discrepancy. I suppose, in that fanfiction, I was graced with the best of the genes."

"Sam seemed nice. And Thomas."

It irked him that she knew their names. That she seemed to be using them as ammunition.

He was very glad that he didn't have a current Facebook account. The last time he'd posted anything he'd been about fifteen and, with as many selfies as he and his brother had, he never posted any on there. And Sam wasn't into social media, which meant she wouldn't be able to find anything, even if she searched with Sam and Levi's last name.

This didn't give him much relief. "They did, didn't they?"

"I didn't ask about blood to break the curse or anything. Whose blood I need." Blood relations. Names. "I know you prefer your plans to be your own."

"Breaking curses is quite tedious work. It must be done at precisely the right moment. Without that proper timing I wouldn't have been able to get my revenge on Barbossa."

"Exactly. And it's not as if you ever feel you owe your crew anything." She crossed her arms. "And maybe you don't, but you do tend to double cross people." Nora lowered her voice. "I just didn't want to be someone you left behind."

What was she thinking right now? She was obviously hurt, but he hadn't heard what Sam had said to her in line or why that would cause her to get so emotional. Why would she feel like she was owed his name, anyway? Or anything from him?

"That only happens if someone falls behind," he said. "And while you are part of my crew, and I'm glad to have you, only the captain ever gives any orders and makes decisions. Savvy?"

Levi tried not to cringe at his own bluntness.

"That makes complete sense. I know, I'm being too much. Just tell him to be more careful with your secrets, or else they might get stolen away, even accidentally." She inclined her head. "Good day, Mr. Sparrow."

Levi watched as she went, heart sinking. Why had he gotten so caught up in this lie?
