Chapter 40: A Forgotten Past
Third Person POV
Fright Knight's body shook with sobs as he held the lifeless body of his love. Her eyes no longer smiling, her dark hair sticky with blood, bile trailing down the side of her cheek. Yet there was still a sense of beauty and grace to her. Everyone had their heads bowed in respect. Well, everyone but a very confused and scared red haired girl who was currently rocking back and forth on the floor, silently sobbing to herself. Sam turned slightly to look at the girl. She frowned at the state the girl was in. The gothic teen broke away from the group mourning the Queen, and went over to Scarlet. She knelt beside her, and gently placed her hand on the fiery haired girl's shoulder, causing her to flinch. Frostbite noticed this and whipped around angrily, forming a sword of ice as he did. "Lady Sam, what are you doing?! That female is dangerous!" Many other ghosts noticed Sam's actions and started drawing their weapons once more, even the humans.
Sam stood up and moved in front of Scarlet in protection. "Wait! This has all been a misunderstanding!" She shouted. "That monster who attacked, that wasn't... whoever this is!" She leaned down and gently lifted the girl to her feet. "Look at her eyes! They're green! Before they were blue!" Sure enough, upon close inspection, the ghosts noticed the change in eye color.
"P-Please, can I just g-go home?" The girl stuttered.
Jazz walked over to Sam and the girl. Sam and Jazz exchanged a few words and Sam let Jazz lead the girl away to one of the benches. The other ghosts and humans put away their weapons and began to mutter among themselves. Sam pushed through the crowd and was able to find Dani, Tucker, and Talia. She pulled them to the back of the group where Fright Knight and Clockwork still stood. The Ghost King had stopped sobbing, but he still held his dead Queen tightly in his arms, stroking her hair. Clockwork sadly watched, not wanting to tear them apart. The Time Master noticed the teens approaching and floated over to them. Sam opened her mouth to speak but Clockwork beat her to it. "No, I do not know how any of this happened. I had checked the time stream before the wedding and these events were not visible in any of the outcomes I witnessed."
Tucker was the first to ask the question everyone was wondering, "How is that possible?"
Clockwork shifted to his toddler form and placed a hand on his chin, "It had occurred to me before, but this ordeal now confirms my theory..." He trailed off and stared directly at the teens. "We are dealing with an entity that can exist outside of time." He began pacing back and forth, before coming to a stop in front of Sam. He held out his hand, "The necklace, may I see it?"
Sam tilted her head in confusion, "What necklace?"
Clockwork's red eyes widened in fear, "The Heart!" He said urgently, "Do you have it?!"
Recognition flashed across Sam's face and her hand flew to her neck, but the golden chain was not there. Memories ran through her head. The bathroom. Scarlet. She had been talking to her and... and there was a pain in her neck. "Scarlet," she whispered, "The thing that possessed Scarlet stole the Heart!"
"I am the Crown once more." Whispered Talia. The group looked at her in shock, but soon everyone's attention went to Fright Knight as he let out a loud gasp. Nina's body lay on the floor, her eyes closed and the bile and blood wiped clean from her face. Fright Knight leaned over her, clutching his head, as his eyes glowed white.
"Pavor? Pavor!" Clockwork shouted, shaking the Ghost King's shoulder.
"The castle. I can see it. Everything makes sense now. Everything is as it once was." Fright Knight whispered as his back straightened and stood up. He turned to the worried faces of the humans and ghosts watching him. "It all goes back to the beginning." He told them. Fright Knight extended his arms, palms up, towards the group. "You must see too."
Everyone looked to Clockwork for guidance, and the Elder Spirit nodded, taking Fright Knight's hand. His eyes started to glow white, just like Fright Knight's. The others, albeit reluctantly, reached out for his hands and grabbed onto them. Each of their eyes lit up with the same white light.
The Past
Pariah Dark angrily paced back and forth across his throne room, a female ghost floating by his side. She wore a long blue dress with a white sash, and had long flowing green hair. Her eyes were a deep red and her skin was as white as snow. Pariah growled deep in his throat, "That fool, where is he?! My reign over this entire realm is almost complete, and he decides to up and disappear?!" Pariah slammed his foot onto the ground, causing the castle to shake. He pointed at a nearby guard. "YOU! GO FIND VIZIER AND BRING HIM TO ME!" He demanded. The guard nodded and raced out of the throne room.
The female floating beside Pariah placed a hand on his shoulder, "Dearest, do try to calm down. I am positive Vizier is around." The former Ghost King turned to the female, and Fright Knight raced into the room with a young female ghost slung over his shoulder.
"Release me you lesser spirit! You will pay for treating me this way!" She screamed as she pounded on Fright Knight's back.
"Sire, I caught her trying to escape her room again." Fright Knight informed the King. Pariah frowned at the news and the female beside him placed her hand over her mouth, her eyes widening in fear as she looked up at Pariah to see his reaction.
"I see. Bring her here and leave us." The Ghost King commanded. Fright Knight nodded and deposited the young girl he was carrying onto the floor, and exited the throne room while the girl shouted curses at him. "Riona!" Pariah shouted, causing the girl to flinch.
She rushed over to the King and bowed, "Yes father?"
"Why do you continue to disobey me!?" He shouted, as he towered over Riona. His daughter said nothing, staring him directly in the eyes. He squinted his eyes at her, until they flew open in anger. "Are you trying to charm me?!" Riona's cheeks turned a deep green and she looked away from the intimidating form of her father.
"Riona! You know better than to use your powers like that!" The female beside Pariah scolded. Riona opened her mouth to speak, but any sound she was about to make was silenced by Pariah backhanding her across the face. Tears sprung to her eyes and the ghost beside Pariah gasped. She rushed to Riona's side and helped the girl to her feet.
"Do not assist her Eleanor! Our daughter must suffer for her disrespect!" Pariah screamed at the older female. Eleanor reluctantly released Riona and returned to her husband's side. Tears continued to spill from Riona's eyes as Pariah approached her. "You miserable mistake, return to your room at once! And do not leave it unless I bid you to!" He reached for a small red stone hanging from a golden chain around her neck and yanked it off her neck, causing Riona to let out a blood curdling scream. He shouted for Fright Knight who entered the room and dragged Riona out of the room, kicking and screaming.
"I hate you! You will all bow before me! It has been written in time! The Crown will rise!" She screamed as the doors slammed closed behind her. Pariah sighed as he walked to his throne and sat down, Eleanor taking a seat in a slightly smaller throne beside the King's. A guard rushed into the throne room, out of breath.
"Sire," the guard panted, "the Elder Spirits are approaching. They are calling for your head." Eleanor turned to her husband, worry in her eyes. Pariah stood, grabbing the mace resting against the side of his throne.
"Let them come. I will finally finish this ridiculous war. With or without that fool Vizier." And with that, Pariah charged past the guard and out onto the battle field.
Meanwhile
Riona poked her head out of her room. Fright Knight was gone and there was a commotion going on outside and screaming. Riona felt joy. The castle was under attack, that meant her 'father' was in danger. Once he was gone, the true ruler of the Ghost Zone would take over.
Her.
She heard the loud cry of her father and a small earthquake shook the castle. Riona raced through the mysteriously empty halls towards the main entrance. She arrived just in time to watch the Crown of Fire and Ring of Rage be taken away from the unconscious body of the Ghost King. A smirk appeared on her face as she watched him be carried away. But to her surprise, the Elder Spirits gathered together far away from the territory of Pariah's Keep. They extended their hands and Riona felt the castle shake beneath her feet. The tremors knocked her off her feet and she fell onto the ground, smashing her head against the floor.
It was probably for the best, for had she been conscious, the pain she would have felt during this event would be immense. Her form was destroyed in the reforming of the castle, and she became nothing. But the ones watching her were not finished yet. The dark forms of Umbra and Tynan smirked as they used their dark powers to restore the body of the twisted heir in a new dimension of their creation.
Riona woke on the black stone floors of the Dark Castle. Her eyes blazed with red fury and her hair was alight with green flames. Her body was encased in dark armor and a dark aura radiated off her. She was whole again, yet was nothing. A piece of her was missing, and she needed to find it. Voices whispered in her head and she smiled. "A Diamond of Life and Death. My Diamond." She whispered and started to chuckle. Her giggles turned to full blown laughs and the sounds of her insanity filled the halls of the empty castle. The Lost One will become the Crown once more and when they do.
The Heavens will fall.
Present
Everyone gasped as they were all released from the vision. "Riona," whispered Fright Knight, "I remember now! She was the daughter of Pariah Dark! All memory of her was lost in her father's fall from power."
Clockwork nodded, "Now I know why I haven't been able to find our cloaked friend interfering with timelines. She no longer fully exists." The Master of Time shifted to his elderly form, "But now she has her Heart and will not stop until she gains the power she thinks she deserves."
Fright Knight reached for his hair and pulled at it. "The castle's memories returned the second Riona entered the castle." The Ghost King looked to Clockwork, "And remember last year? With the earthquake?" Clockwork nodded, "That was the Dark Castle! Riona had tried to summon her castle into this dimension, exactly where her father's castle rested. But this castle prevented it!"
"And now she has Danny." Tucker added. Everyone became silent, consumed by their own thoughts. It was only when Jazz burst through the crowd of ghosts with Scarlet shouting their names did they snap out of their self induced trances.
"Guys! I think Scarlet can lead us to whatever ghost possessed her!" Jazz cried. Everyone's eyes widened and focused on Scarlet. The girl stepped closer to Jazz, who urged her to speak. She cleared her throat and began to explain, her voice small.
"I had been possessed by that ghost for so long, Jazz thinks I created a... 'bond' with it." Scarlet closed her eyes and pressed her fingers to her temples. "If I concentrate I can still feel them near me, and sometimes, I get these visions of a weird castle made of black stone surrounded by murky darkness." Clockwork nodded at her explanation. He fiddled with the time on his staff and muttered to himself. Dani and Talia went over to Scarlet and tried to talk to her, with Jazz's help. Sam looked from Tucker to Fright Knight. The Ghost King had gone back to mourning his dead bride and Tucker was looking at Sam.
The goth teen furrowed her brow and stared at the fallen body of Nina. She was going to make this Riona ghost pay. She was going to pay for killing Nina, injuring her friends, mentally torturing Scarlet and she was going to pay for taking Danny. When Sam was done with her, there wouldn't be enough left of the ghost girl to put into the Fenton Thermos. Riona now had the blood of one of Sam's friends on her hands.
Sam was going to unleash Hell on Riona.
