Soulmate Searching
Val's POV
After a few more hours of fixing Parker's code, we finally, finally head out into the center of the biodome.
Parker's coding wasn't that bad. In fact, there were only a few mistakes sprinkled here and there. But today I learned just how much of a perfectionist Parker is. He made us read over that coding like hundreds of times over and over again until allowing us to leave.
"Parker, if you're such a perfectionist," Crystal starts off, sounding as exhausted as I feel, "then why were there so many mistakes whenever I looked through it earlier?"
"Well I usually don't care about mistakes until I go back through and polish it up. When you came in, I had just gotten done with the testing version and not the finished product."
"Makes sense."
We arrive in the middle of the biodome and we take a look around at everyone. There's a lot more people here than I expected. Were there this many people in the airport when we first arrived?
I feel a tug at my shirt from Parker, "Val. How are we gonna do this? There's way too many people here and we only have one ring."
I keep on glancing around, hoping to come up with an idea for how to go about this.
"If you guys are worried about how we're gonna do this, I think I have an idea," Crystal says before walking back out to one of the doors and picking up a sheet of paper. She waves it around so quick that I can't read anything on it.
"What is that?" Parker asks.
"It's the sign-in sheet. When you come in here you have put what times you were in here."
"There's a sign-in sheet?" I ask, extremely surprised. "Whoops."
Parker and I look at each other with guilty faces.
"That's besides the point. We can use this as a checklist and then just try to put the ring on everybody," Crystal says happily.
"That's a great plan, but you two are forgetting one very important detail. Crystal's soulmate might not even be apart of this program," Parker states.
I hit him upside the head, "That doesn't matter. If they are, we'd better find them while we can, right?"
And so, we start.
We put a ring on everyone and get a variety of results. Mostly Rivals, Frenemies, and Friends pop up but no Soulmate in sight.
We slump down against the wall in defeat, sighing.
"Well that was a bust," Crystal says in disappointment.
"Yeah," Parker agrees.
We all just sit there for a while before I pop up.
"Oh my goodness, guys! We're all such idiots!" I scream in realization.
"Well thanks," Parker says sarcastically. "I realized that about halfway through."
"No! No, we only made a checklist for the people in the lab. We completely forgot about the people in their rooms," I state the obvious.
Crystal facepalms, "And we call ourselves scientists."
She starts to stand up and run down a random hallway before Parker shouts at her to stop.
"What? Aren't you guys as excited as I am?"
"Yes, we're very excited. But we should think about this logically first," Parker holds up his hand in a stop motion.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"Well, we should check with people we know."
"But we only know like one other person," Crystal replies.
Parker makes a gesture that says, 'Lead the way.'
Crystal and I start jogging down towards a hallway that's right next to ours. We stop in front of a doorway and Crystal stands in front of it nervously.
"Well? What are you waiting for?" I nudge her on.
"I'm just... really scared. What if it isn't them? Who will it be then? What if I never find my soulmate?" Crystal panics.
"Don't worry, Crystal. You will. With or without our help," I respond.
She nods her head and walks up the door very slowly. She raises up her hand to knock on the door. It's so silent in the hallway that I can hear her heartbeating intensely. She finally knocks on the door.
There's no answer.
Getting a little bit more courage, she knocks on the door harder and faster. We wait a few more seconds but there's still no answer. She lifts her fist one last time but before she can even knock the door swings open and out pops Jeremiah Leckley.
"What?!" Parker asks.
"What the hell do you guys want?" Jeremiah asks in his usual British accent. I take a peak around his room and realize he was just in a very deep and long sleep.
"Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry. Wrong room," Crystal closes the door quickly and runs out into the hallway.
"I thought that was-"
"They switched rooms remember?" Crystal explains.
"So she's actually staying in your room? How do you even forget that?" I ask exasperatedly.
"I don't know, ok?!" Crystal says flustered while walking back to our hallway.
She walks up to her door and opens it slowly. There, sitting on her bed, is Shelby.
"Hey guys! What's going on?" Shelby asks in a very cheery voice.
Crystal walks over to Shelby very slowly and puts the ring on her finger. Based on the look on her face, I assume the ring reads Soulmate.
Crystal looks up at Shelby with big, shiny eyes while Shelby asks innocently, "What does that mean?"
"You're... my soulmate."
