Chapter Twenty-Nine

Raven hadn't dared hope for much. Some healing skills here, a passive empathic ability there, but she wouldn't raise her expectations too high. There would be less room to fall her way. She would never have confessed to him, but Raven did worry about Damian. Never mind the weapon that his mind and body had been moulded in to, or the superior genetics; Damian was so starkly human, so small besides the immense power of the likes of Superman. He hadn't bullet-proof skin or magical constructs to protect him from harm- firm resolve could not compare to impenetrability.

At least, he hadn't any until a few days ago.

There was a god inside his head- Raven still struggled with comprehending. An ancient, powerful god. A god who could raise and command the dead, a god who presided over passing souls, a god who...turned out to be not like the others. 'God of death, decay and graveyards' seemed to make a bit of an odd sentence when paired with 'who turns out to be a sweetheart with good listening skills and who maybe needs a cuddle now-and-then'.

And with Anubis, Raven's concerns dissipated. Damian's unsettling humanness had been thoroughly patched over- a hole in trousers sewn with unbreakable thread-: Damian had magic.

Just the thought brought a giddy smile to her face. She briefly wondered (as she walked besides Damian to the communal kitchen) if, upon looking at her, people would think that she was half-mad. Raven glanced at Damian and found that he was already looking at her. While her first instinct might once have been to slam her eyes to the ground and hope that no one had noticed the heat rising to her neck, now she met his eyes gladly.

Those gemstones would never cease to infuriate her with the way they could bend her emotions so easily to his will. An understanding softness in them would calm her in an instant; a piercing stare could make her knees weak. She took some solace in the emotional changes he faced dealing with her.
Pride could not help but lick her lips in satisfaction as Raven eased his nerves with a single, gentle touch, or dropped his jaw with combative skill (a most wonderful expression to witness from a habitually unimpressed critic).

Damian would often observe his team mates while they trained, no doubt absorbing the different techniques that came with their various skill sets. She wondered if he had observed her in that way, berating herself for even considering otherwise: of course he had! Which meant he had even more of an idea of how to utilise magic alongside physical combat. There were still, however, mountains more that he would have to learn about magic.

Again, the giddiness sparked in Raven and she bit her bottom lip to suppress a smile. If there were mountains more that he had to learn, then there were mountains more that she had to teach! Offensive, defensive, hexes, charms, curses (Egyptian magicians were notorious for being good at curses), perhaps even some voodoo (Raven knew a specialist witch-doctor or two that would be willing to teach), blood magic, elemental magic, healing spells- the works!

Raven grinned to herself: there were so many texts readily available to go through together. Within her room I'm the Titans Tower, stacked from the floor to the ceiling, were magical texts from all time periods of human history (including a shelf entirely dedicated to Ancient Egyptian enchantments). If she want mistaken, Raven possessed several volumes of Elvish and Troll magic- maybe even a book or two about angelic power!

"What's the matter?" Damian pulled her out of her musings.

"Hm?"

"You're smiling... more than usual..." he said, voice low for his father and Selina now to hear. "Why?"

Raven's smile shrank very pointedly, but couldn't flee from existence, "Oh nothing.." she sighed, raising Damian'a suspicions.

He stopped his internal speculations as she took his hand in hers like it was the most natural way of walking for her. And Damian was surprised to find that it did feel like second-nature. While he wasn't one for public displays of affection, Damian found that he didn't mind holding the witch's hand, even as his father walked a metre or so in front of him. At any moment, Batman could turn around and see them; Damian was okay with that.

Positively buzzing, Raven looked up at Damian. He raised an eyebrow at her, tempted to pull out a thermometer and take her temperature: Raven was smiling too much. Then again, he wouldn't want to spoil the perfect image besides him. Her eyes were brighter and wider than ever, eager and warm despite their cool colour.

Raven held his hand tighter and whispered, "I do love you Damian- I hope you know that."

A bajillion kilometres above and away, resting on a couch woven from clouds, Aphrodite shrieked so loud that Superman could hear it through the heavenly defence system.

"Huh?" Clark looked up, using his x-ray vision to see through the Hall of Justice's many floors. Finding nothing out of place, Clark continued with his crossword.

"What is it? Something happening?" J'onn asked him.

"Oh no," Superman shrugged, "Just thought I heard something."

While Clark was a beam of sunshine in physical appearance (and aura), in walked four transmitters of darkness. Besides the eerily shadowy feeling surrounding them, Clark's attention was caught the most by the younger two.

Oh sweet Jesus and apple-pie, they were holding hands! Damian-mildly-intimidating-beacon-of-malice-Wayne was holding hands with a girl!

Had Bruce seen?-Clark wondered. Raven and Damian didn't seem to be trying to hide that they were hOldiNG HanDs. Clark had to admit, they did look much happier next to each other than normal. Perhaps they'd said something to each other.

Clark thought back to the last minute- had he heard anything they'd said? A moment was all it took for Superman to know.

They're in love!

As a child, Clark's greatest adversary was his own inability to keep a poker face. As an adult, nothin had changed. He checked to see if any of the others had realised: Diana's eyes were round as she took the scene in, J'onn was very much the same. Bruce, it seemed, was oblivious.

Grim as ever, Batman greeted the three heroes with a small nod.
Equally as cool but with more vigour, Catwoman all-but purred, "Hey."

Clark didn't doubt that if Barry hadn't left a minute ago, he would have remarked about the return of the cat-lady to Batman's life. Unfortunately, he didn't have the luxury of exploring that funny little daydream: the biggest chunk of gossip in recent superhero history was standing right in front of him.

By 'standing' he meant literally standing, for the two teenagers (having quickly said their 'hello's) now stood right opposite Clark, at the other end of the kitchen table. Damian passed an unimpressed eye over Clark's half-finished intermediate crossword. It was only when he looked directly at her that Clark realised the demoness had been speaking to him.

'The strongest hearing on the planet but you've got no listening skills'- Ma Kent used to say.

"Sorry, what was that?" He asked, glancing down at their entertained hands. Utilising his super-speed, Superman entertained the curiosity of whether-or-not Batman had noticed.

He had.

His heart rate had accelerated.

Clark could have bitten his nails in anticipation for Bruce's rection.

Upon receiving it, Clark realised that he would not particularly mind dying at that moment. He had seen all he would ever need to see in life. There was no more it could present to light up his world.

Batman was smiling.

Not a self-assured smirk, or a small acknowledgment of a teammate's achievements, not even a classic, debonair, Bruce-Wayne-the-heartthrob smile; a beam that spread from his chin to the very points of his Bat-eat/horn thingies (Clark didn't really know what they were).

Good God- he smiled so much that Clark saw his teeth for a moment.

He should have brought a camera to take a picture- were it not for the fact that he was practically frozen in his place, Clark would have.

Tuning back in to Raven's words, Clark's heart fell in enthusiasm. She was asking about Conner and the Titans.

The relationship between himself and Conner was unconventional to say in the least. It stung him a little to know that Raven, as an empath, could feel his changing emotions as she asked after him- how he was settling in to the Titans. Robin joined in the questioning; concerned more for overall team cohesion than Conner's individual well-being. Should he have felt comforted that they seemed to care? Frustrated that they came to him to ask as if Conner was his son?- genetically sure he might have been, but that didn't really mean that he was...

Clark might have wiped the sweat from his forehead as the teenager's attention was drawn away from him by Catwoman. Looking at the supposedly former thief, Superman recalled how she and Batman had risked Lois' life when he was under Poison Ivy's control. Were he a bull, Clark might have angrily blown air from his nostrils, stamping his feet.

Batman too cut himself short, having been on the middle of explaining to J'onn and Diana the outcome of Robin's tests. Apparently, everyone wanted to hear what she was about to ask. Half a wine glass of cranberry juice resting in her hands, Selina gestured towards the present Titans.

"So," she began, elongating the 'o', "I've got to ask. Is this official? You two." She took a long, drawn sip.

Raven raised a pointed eyebrow (a move mastered to perfection) as Damian questioned, "Official?"

"I believe Selina is referring to a romantic relationship." Diana said.

The room waited with bated breath.

The manner in which the two answered, with hands now disconnected, was almost disconcertingly blasé.

They looked at one another for a single moment. Looked back at Diana. Damian raised his eyebrows. Raven shrugged a tiny shrug.

"Yes," Robin answered first.

"I suppose we are." She finished.
