Chapter Seventy-Nine

Damian didn't know what to say.

Anubis! He called out and only then remembered that he wasn't there anymore.

But his chest warmed and he knew that the god's essence reassured him; it was like a shadow, or an echo- only the impression of it's true image- and Damian tried to push the pain away.

"Damian...?"

His eyes were hopelessly round and lost- Bruce began to think that he had made a big mistake. Only Cassandra Cain might have noticed the slight flinch in the lines of his face as Bruce anticipated a verbal onslaught.

It never came.

"Right. Marriage..." Damian seemed confused more than anything but his wits were slowly recovering. He wished he had a bottle of water on hand; his throat was awfully clogged.

The boy looked up with clarity in to his father's eyes and saw the conviction in them. But more than that, he saw in them an unbridled love- for him, for Selina? He didn't know.

Damian was too tired to be angry and his eyes were too old to let him act irrationally and Raven...she sat far too deeply in his soul for him to begrudge his father for love. Love was good. Damian had learnt that in his born blood as well as his chosen family.

"You weren't married to mother." He said. Bruce had expected Talia to be brought in to the matter.

Damian hadn't asked a question but his father responded all the same, "No. I loved her for a time."

"I know you did. She...you ought to have heard the way she would speak of you." Damian's perfected accent began to crumble as he walked the paths of memory. "She would sit me in her lap and tell me of the great, righteous man that was my father- and in those moments I felt like her child." He smiled sadly.

"But mother isn't here anymore."

Bruce had nothing to say, only a heart that ached for his child, who had faced far too much from a world too cruel.

"And your love is now for Kyle- Selina..."

"Damian if I could ever-"

"I know...father I understand." He said, and thought of Raven. "Love is...never your fault." He sighed, "And it isn't hers either. I can't hate K-Selina for something in the Fates' hands. So if you love her and she makes you happy...I suppose the part of me that has come to accept emotions besides anger shall be happy for you." Damian nodded firmly.

Bruce cracked a smile, "And the other part?"

"I'll shut up soon enough father. Besides, a permanent Kyle means more cats in the Manor." Damian joked, and was able to feel a little, bustling affection for the woman.

Damian (subsequently Raven too), all his siblings, and Alfred were sworn to secrecy and held it tight.

The night that Bruce readied his nerves to ask Selina- costumed, on the rooftops of Gotham where they'd met so long ago- he met first a cherished friend, then another. Outside of the Batcave but deep in his heart, Superman and WonderWoman were his support net. The oldest of his heroic friends and the truest- with a divine lasso to prove it.

Sometimes, in the quiet cold of humanity past midnight, Batman would think of how trivial the matters of men were to such beings. Diana might outlive the stars. Clark might watch the Earth turn to dust. Perhaps he had the power to freeze the stars and she the strength to crumble the Earth.

But then he remembered Clark Kent's southern accent and how he stressed to pick Lois' Valentine's Day flowers every year; and Diana drank hot chocolate every night, routinely, and loved ice cream with a passion. So big but minute also.

Their perspectives were unique and always given with pure hearts, neither malicious nor deceptive. Their words were good as gospel.

With the positive counsels of his closest comrades lifting his heart, Batman met Catwoman at the place of the beginning of their conflict and love, little box in hand and heart in throat.

And after stammers and disbelief and tears, you'll be happy to know that, after all their years of pushing and pulling, she said yes.

With Koriand'r's cheery, sincere congratulations to Selina and Bruce came also a big question: when would Raven and Robin come back?

They were Titans and had been away for far too long. One thing had led to another and summer had turned to Autumn with them missing from the Tower. Their den mother was calling out to them and Damian and Raven felt the need to come back grow ever stronger.

Their conversation had long been put-off; the afternoon that Bruce and Selina announced their engagement, the garden behind Wayne Manor once more saw the demonic pair. Sat cross-legged on the grass, having resumed their casual magical practise- this time manipulating the soil itself in making small ripples in the ground- the two of them looked at each other unguardedly.

Damian held Raven's hands on the grass between them and turned them over, tracing over the curved lines of her palm contemplatively.

Raven knew his guilt of being so absent and sighed, "We need to go back Damian, don't we?"

He brought her hands to his lips and kissed her knuckles. Her heart fluttered: Damian could be so wonderfully soft when he let his heart's wants bleed in to his body, and the September sun made him ever the more beautiful. The delicate contours of his aura danced on the autumn breeze and mingled with the golden light.

"Yes, we do I'm afraid." Damian looked up and found her eyes almost black- deepened with emotion.

"They're family, aren't they? We're Titans. All of them have changed and grown and we haven't been there to see it. And we've changed and grown and they haven't seen that." She said.

"It's a strange thought." Damian said. "But if they are family- and the Titans are- then that's okay. We needed this" he regarded the Manor fondly, " and it is another home, for the both of us. But now I think the Fates have more in store for us and we can move on."

The two of them shared a thought and, smiling in recollection, recited, "Home is where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in."

"Robert Frost." Raven grinned.

"Like it was yesterday." Damian said.

They sat in comfortable silence.

She added, finally, "Portals though- we're coming back so often that Alfred will be sick of us."

"TT. Of course." Damian said. "There was never any question."
