"Boner boy," a student heckles Jungkook as they get onto the bus.
Jungkook's cheeks heat up, still not completely over what happened—and neither are his classmates.
"Shut up, what are you, twelve?" Jimin snaps, putting a hand on Jungkook's shoulder. "Don't listen to them."
Jungkook tries to smile to show Jimin his gratitude as he sits on the window seat. Jimin sits in the row behind Jungkook with Soobin. He scowls at Naeun as she sits down next to him.
"What? Why are you acting like you're the victim in this situation?" Naeun scoffs.
"You didn't have to yell it out for the whole class to hear," Jungkook whines.
Naeun rolls her eyes. "Look, I'm sorry, Jungkook. They will forget about it in no time."
"Boner boy!" Jungkook hears from the front of the bus.
Naeun smiles guiltily. "What were you thinking about?"
"Naeun!" Jungkook playfully pushes Naeun's shoulder.
"What? I'm curious."
The bus starts to move, and Jungkook feels his phone vibrate in his pocket—what follows is something Jungkook isn't prepared for—It seems that Jungkook isn't the only person receiving this. The whole bus bursts into chatter about the mysterious group chat that has been made.
"What is this?"
"Was this meant for me?"
"You got it too?!"
"Aw, man! I thought I got a secret admirer."
"Quieten down everyone!" The teacher shouts, not happy with the increased volume of chatter.
Jungkook looks down at the message for a second time, his heart racing in panic. He knows exactly what this is.
Anonymous: Your name is cute and all... But I'm gonna have to call you mine.
Naeun looks at the message and then at Jungkook. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
"Perhaps it's time to become one," Jungkook mutters, closing his phone. He turns to look at Taehyung a few rows back—who's now sitting with Mina. He knows. Is this Taehyung's way of telling everyone about 'us'?... No, it can't be—the confusion on his face tells him otherwise.
"It looks like you know something. Do you know who sent the message?" Naeun asks.
"Me? No," Jungkook refutes unconvincingly. He debates in his mind whether or not to tell Naeun about the message being coincidentally the same as one of the notes from Taehyung.
Everyone's phones start to ding once again, and the volume of chatter only increases, making the teacher even more distressed.
Anonymous: I wonder what you'd look like... underneath me.
This is no coincidence.
"I've got another one!" Naeun screeches into Jungkook's ear. "Oh my god."
"I think I might just drop out of school," Jungkook mumbles to himself. He starts to think about a hypothetical life out on the streets with his untalented ass busking. He pictures a worn-out hat laid out to accept donations along with a pity me sign to make people throw in their spare change.
"I wonder what you'd look like underneath me," Soobin reads off his phone. "What is that supposed to mean?"
"Oh, soobin..." Jimin says, making Jungkook sink further down into his seat.
"What?" Soobin asks. "Oh! Another message."
"Gee, they're on fire now," Naeun points out then turns to Jungkook. "What are you doing down there?"
Jungkook shakes his head, ignoring the girl. He furthers the act by covering his ears with his hands. He can't stand the constant chatter over the text messages. This is the reason why Jungkook didn't want to show up to school today—and to think Jungkook thought he got away with it is laughable now.
"Maybe the messages are meant for me?"
"No one wants you underneath them, c'mon."
...
...
"Earth to Jungkook," Naeun whispers into Jungkook's ear. "We're back at school."
Jungkook's eyes jolt open, scanning the almost empty bus now.
"We're here already?"
Naeun nods. "I was going to leave you there, but then I thought that wouldn't be nice."
"Oh, right. You're trying the nice thing out lately," Jungkook jokes.
Naeun turns her vision to the person walking his way towards the two in the bus, putting a hand on Jungkook's shoulder.
"Looks like I didn't need to wake you up anyway. I'll leave you two alone," Naeun says, winking at the boy. She makes her way out of the bus.
"Jungkook... can we talk?" Taehyung asks, sitting himself down next to Jungkook.
Jungkook furrows his brows. He looks down at the front of the bus, and the bus driver is nowhere in sight. "Where did the bus driver go?"
"It's lunchtime."
"We should go too."
"No, Jungkook, we need to talk."
Jungkook throws his head back onto the headrest. "I don't want to talk about it."
"The messages, they are—"
Jungkook nods. "They are..."
"I'm confused, Jungkook. Do you know anything—"
"You're confused?! What about me?" Jungkook cuts him off in disbelief.
"I—"
"I don't know what to do," Jungkook whines, feeling the world collapsing around him. "I can't keep going on like this. It's one thing after the other."
"What are you talking about?" Taehyung scoots closer to Jungkook, wrapping his arm around the younger. "Talk to me."
Jungkook unconsciously leans his head into Taehyung's arm. "Everything... everything is a mess. Since day one, it has just been a direct train to disaster."
"What are you saying?" Taehyung's eyes flash with worry. "Is this about us?"
Jungkook realises his mess up as he removes himself from Taehyung's embrace.
Fuck it
"It's Mina."
...
...
...
"What?"
"Mina is blackmailing me into leaving you. She has been doing it since day one. She even has a photo of us in a compromising position that she is threatening to leak," Jungkook confesses. God that felt good to get off my chest.
"It can't be... I trust her." Taehyung looks down at his lap, beyond confused.
"What is it with you and her? All the warning signs you just ignore. She's a fucking psychopath."
"Don't say that..."
"Oh, so you trust her but not me?"
"I-I didn't say that," Taehyung mutters.
"I can't believe you."
"Hang on, this whole time you have been hiding this away from me, and you expect me not to be shocked?" Taehyung defends himself.
"Are you kidding me?" Jungkook bites his tongue. "Let me off." Jungkook struggles in his seat but is stopped by Taehyung's hands.
"Don't be ridiculous, Jungkook," Taehyung deadpans. "What happened to no secrets? We made a promise, and during that time you still decided to keep this a secret from me?"
Jungkook goes to speak, but the words are refusing to come out. He fucked up, yes.
"Jungkook?"
Jungkook groans, kicking the seat in front of him. "What do you expect? None of this would have happened if it weren't for you sending those notes, to begin with."
"You know why I sent those! I have no regrets. Besides, you were the one sending notes to yourself, don't pretend you didn't like it."
"I sent notes to myself because I had self-esteem problems. I wanted to feel good about myself for once! You don't even have to do anything to be liked. Don't bring that into this. It was something harmless. You are the one who made Mina run around like a dog just to play with my feelings. In the end, you played with two hearts."
"I thought we were beyond this by now! I made it clear how I feel about you, why do you have to keep bringing this up?"
"Because none of this would have happened if you just stayed out of it!"
"I—" Taehyung's lips start to tremble.
"Why couldn't you just ask me out like a normal person."
"I-I would have never got the courage to ask you out if it weren't for the notes... Jungkook, I'm so sorry. I know what I did was probably not the brightest, but isn't that what makes us unique? I wish you could view it the way I do..."
"Well now look where that led us to. Soon enough, Mina is going to make me the laughing stock of the whole school." Jungkook starts to cry, making Taehyung embrace the boy.
"Jungkook... Look at me," Taehyung lifts Jungkook's chin and places a tender kiss on his lips. "No matter what happens, we can get through it, okay?"
"Maybe it would have been better if we stayed friends," Jungkook mutters.
"Don't say that."
"It's true... None of this would have happened if you didn't pursue me."
"I've liked you for the longest time, Jungkook, how could you say something like that?"
"It just hurts... It hurts being with you."
Taehyung stands up from his seat and looks down at Jungkook. "Is that how you really feel?"
Jungkook looks down, not being able to respond.
"For once in your life, think about us rather than just you." Taehyung turns and starts to walk out of the bus. "I'm going to give you some space to think over what truly matters for you, cause you know I've always put you first."
"Tae..."
"See you in class."
