Jungkook grabs a slice of bread, putting it into the toaster and leaning back, humming a tune from a popular pop song while he waits.
"You're up early," his dad says, sipping on his coffee. He looks back to the newspaper, adjusting his reading glasses. "You must be up to no good."
Jungkook grins, knowing that his dad is spot on. "And why would you think that?"
"All you do is play those video games at god knows what time."
"I don't just play video games."
His dad lowers his glasses to give Jungkook a disapproving look. "You know, you'll go blind one day."
The toaster dings. "Well, that will be my problem."
"Unfortunately, your problems end up being my problems."
Jungkook ignores his father's grumbling, making his way out of the house with his now buttered piece of toast.
His plan is foolproof. All he has to do is get to school early—before most students, place the note that he oh so humbly wrote and walk back to his place before Taehyung arrives to walk with him. Then he'll start his day without suspicion. He will then open the note in front of Taehyung. Why the need to walk back and forth, you ask? Well, it's his only option to execute the plan without Taehyung noticing; hence why he is leaving super early.
Everything goes to plan until he arrives at school to find his homeroom is locked. Fuck. He looks through the window in to the door. The window on the other side is open, but he doubts he can climb two stories. If only he had a pin; he could try picking the lock like he's seen in the movies.
If he doesn't figure something out soon, he'll be late to meet Taehyung. He starts to roam the halls, looking for a solution. He had seen a bunch of teachers when he had walked into the school, but now that he needs their help, they are nowhere to be seen.
Hearing a vacuum nearby, he starts to speed walk towards the origin of the sound—the janitor would have a key.
He walks up to the janitor, trying to get their attention, but they don't seem to hear him. Jungkook reaches to tap the man on the shoulder, giving him a fright.
Turning the vacuum cleaner off, the janitor turns to Jungkook, eyebrows furrowed, "What on earth— Don't go sneaking up on people like that."
Jungkook bites his bottom lip, feeling guilty. "Sorry, sir. I just— there's this situation, and I need your help."
The janitor sighs but nods. "What can I do for you?"
"You see, I kind of left something behind in one of the classrooms—"
"You'll have to wait till school starts."
"No, please," Jungkook tries his hardest not to pull at his hair. "I really need to see if it's there. It's important. I-I'll—"
"Okay fine. What room?"
Jungkook does a mental fist pump before leading the janitor to his homeroom. The janitor unlocks the door and lets Jungkook in, waiting to the side.
Jungkook rushes to his desk, pulling out the note from his pocket and down onto his desk. He checks to see if the janitor is looking before returning.
"Did you find what you are looking for?" The janitor asks.
Jungkook shakes his head, a small pout forming. "It's not there, sorry."
"Maybe it's in a different room?"
"It's fine. I need to go anyway," Jungkook says, turning on his heels. "Thank you."
"No problem," the janitor replies before locking the door.
Jungkook walks down the hall, turning the corner and racing back to his house, almost tripping several times. The whole ordeal took longer than he thought, and now he is late and sweaty.
He approaches the door as it suddenly opens.
"Yeah, he left earlier. Sorry, dear," Jungkook hears his mother say.
Jungkook ducks quickly behind the mailbox.
"That's okay, Mrs Jeon. Thanks anyway. I'll be off," Taehyung says.
"Get to school safe, and study hard."
"I will."
The door closes. Taehyung walks past Jungkook, unknowing. What should Jungkook do? A few ideas flash through his mind, but he throws them aside, jump-scaring Taehyung instead.
"Boo!"
"Fuck— Jungkook! What the hell?" Taehyung almost trips, clasping onto his shoulder bag.
"Did I scare you?" Jungkook asks with a mischievous glint in his eyes and a wide grin.
"No," Taehyung says, groaning. "I nearly shat my pants."
Jungkook giggles. "I've got my scare game on 100 today." He even scared the janitor.
"Did you really wait behind the mailbox for me all morning?" Taehyung asks, frowning.
Jungkook nods. "It was worth."
💌
The two of them walk into homeroom, Jungkook with hopeful eyes. He looks over to see his note untouched, thanking everyone (in his head) for not tampering with it. He sits down, stretching his hands before picking up the note.
"What's that?" Taehyung asks, standing behind Jungkook.
Jungkook tries his hardest to hide his grin. "It seems to be... a love note?"
A+ for acting. Really.
"What?" Taehyung snatches the note out of his hands. "No way..."
Jungkook's grin turns into a frown. "What do you mean no way? Am I not worthy of a love note?"
"That's not what I meant," Taehyung says, folding the note. He looks at Jungkook, then unfolds the note to look at it again, reading, "You look nice today. A bit lame."
Jungkook snatches the note back. "You are so mean. Are you... perhaps... Jealous?" He quirks a brow.
Taehyung snorts. "No. Why would I be jealous?"
Jungkook shrugs. "I was just wondering."
"Well, I'm just wondering who could have possibly sent this." Taehyung scans the room with his eyes. "Maybe it was put on the wrong desk."
"It has my name on it!
Jungkook made sure to write prettily since his usual handwriting is a little all over the place—he wrote the note over 10 times, cramping his hand in the process.
Taehyung's reaction left a bitter taste in Jungkook's mouth. On that note, Jungkook decides to keep the act up, to run it in Taehyung's face, just a little longer; 'til he's satisfied.
💌
Later that night, Jungkook is hunched over his desk, writing note after note. Yes, that's right; Jungkook has weeks of notes planned. He's developed a signature writing style for his mysterious made-up admirer, one that keeps in touch with his feminine side. Every I is topped with a star and at the end, he signs off with a heart.
"Dinner's ready!" His mother calls.
Jungkook makes his way downstairs; however, Jungkook's jaw slacks, seeing Taehyung smiling back at him at the dinner table. "What are you doing here?"
"His mother called me," Mrs Jeon answers for Taehyung. "Ms Kim will be gone for a week and thought that Taehyung here would be a lonely bug by himself."
Strange.
He isn't too sure what Taehyung's mother's line of work is. All he knows is that she quite often has to travel. Taehyung's father, on the other hand, is no longer around. Not like dead, but more like just not here—they still keep in contact; he just lives in a different city. Jungkook knows for sure that Taehyung loves it when his mum goes away for work—he would usually be celebrating by now, inviting Jungkook over for the week.
So... Why would he be here?
"When were you going to tell me that you're here?" Jungkook asks.
"Actually, I just got here," Taehyung replies. "Your mum sat me at the table since dinner is ready."
Mrs Jeon nods. "That's right. We can't let you boys go hungry."
"Sit down already. Your mother won't serve the food until you sit," Mr Jeon says, pulling the chair out beside him for Jungkook.
Great. Now he has to hide all the notes that he left scattered in his room.
