Cleaning duty. Lovely. Here Jungkook is—along with Taehyung—roaming the school grounds with those reacher grabber things, picking up rubbish and putting it in their garbage bags while onlookers watch, eating their lunch unbothered.
"You didn't go to the bathroom after Jimin came back," Taehyung says, plopping a banana peel into his garbage bag. "What was that all about?"
Jungkook's lips turn into a thin line. "I was trying to figure out who's writing these notes, and I think Jimin is the one."
"Why?"
"Well, he was writing something on a scrap of paper before asking to go to the bathroom."
"You think he went somewhere to place a note instead of the bathroom?"
Jungkook nods, grabbing an empty juice bottle. "Don't think that I was stalking him or anything. I just happened to have looked in his direction."
Taehyung smiles, stifling a laugh. "Sure. Jimin's not the type of person I would have pictured to send a love note. Disappointed?" Taehyung side-eyes Jungkook. "You're probably wishing it was Eunji."
Jungkook frowns, ignoring Taehyung. He couldn't care less about Eunji. He can probably count all the interactions he's had with her on one hand. The thought of Eunji being the note-writer would truly be a shock—and somewhat disappointing (no offence to her).
Taehyung scratches his forehead with the back of his arm, his shoulders slouching. "How long do we have to do this? I'm hungry."
"How're we going, boys?" The janitor asks, walking up to the two. Filled your bags?"
Taehyung and Jungkook open their bags. The janitor looks into them both before looking at Taehyung. "Taehyung, right?"
Taehyung nods.
"And Jungkook?" He looks to Jungkook.
"Yes."
"Taehyung can go. Jungkook, you need to fill the bag a bit more," the Janitor says.
Taehyung fist pumps to his chest as Jungkook groans.
"Oh, by the way," the janitor starts, taking Taehyung's garbage bag. "Did you end up finding the thing you lost the other day?"
Jungkook's mouth gapes open before he says, "Me?" Pointing to himself.
"Yes, you. Remember? You were looking for something before homeroom started."
Taehyung raises a brow.
"Oh, right. Yes. Uhm— " Jungkook cringes. "I don't even remember what I was looking for."
"Oh? It seemed important." The janitor glances at his watch. "On second thought, you can go to lunch too. I don't want to starve you. Just don't tell your teacher."
"Thank you." Jungkook bows his head, handing over the garbage bag.
They watch the janitor head off with the rubbish before Taehyung turns to Jungkook, hand on hip. "What was that?" He asks.
Jungkook shrugs. "Honestly, I have no idea what he's talking about," he lies.
"You're lying," Taehyung accuses. "Why?"
Jungkook doesn't know what to do. His gut feels like it could implode. "I promise. I— I really don't know."
Taehyung doesn't look convinced, but he lets it slide. Liar is written all over Jungkook's face, although he'd rather be a liar than let Taehyung find out the truth about the notes.
💌
After eating, Jungkook heads to his locker, spotting Jimin along the way. He takes a deep breath before gathering the courage to confront the boy.
He reaches out to tap Jimin on the shoulder.
"Yes?" Jimin asks, his head turning away from his locker, eyes raising to meet Jungkooks. "Oh— Jungkook. What is it?"
Jungkook gulps. "Y-You know my name?"
Jimin closes his locker, fully facing Jungkook. "What do you mean? Of course I know your name. We've been in many classes together over the years."
Jungkook awkwardly chuckles, feeling guilty over the fact that Jimin knows his name and yet he had forgotten Jimin's. This wasn't even the first time he'd done this; he'd done the exact same thing with Soobin. God, Jungkook honestly feels terrible; and he's sure to feel even more terrible knowing what he's going to say next.
"I know it's you," Jungkook says.
"It is?" Jimin raises a brow. "Wait, what's me?"
"The notes."
Jimin puts a hand on his hip. "What?"
Jungkook pulls out one of the notes that he kept from his pocket, handing it to Jimin. "I saw you writing a note before. I swear I did."
Jimin opens the note, reading to himself.
Jungkook continues, "If you didn't write it, I don't know— I've been getting these for a week now, and I—"
"So, you think I'm writing these 'love' notes to you?" Jimin looks up into Jungkook's eyes which makes Jungkook look away, his fingers sliding down from the nape of his neck.
"Maybe it's wrong for me to accuse you without any proof..." Jungkook sighs. "But is it you?"
Jimin shakes his head. "No. I didn't write this." He hands the note back to Jungkook. "I'm flattered, though."
Jungkook's cheeks turn a deep shade of pink.
"I do hope you find out who it is," Jimin says, putting a hand on Jungkook's shoulder. "Good luck."
Jimin leaves Jungkook feeling lost and embarrassed. Does he cross Jimin's name off the candidate list now? He shrugs it off, opening his own locker.
Not one, not two, not even three, but five notes fall out of his locker. On the verge of a breakdown, he angrily picks them up, throwing them back into the locker.
"Looks like someone's having a hard time," Jungkook hears a female voice say, feeling a presence leaning against the locker next to his.
Jungkook snaps his head towards the girl. "Eunji?" His eyes widen. He isn't mentally prepared for this confrontation. He's dealt with two strikes already; this third one will mean that he'll be out.
"Jungkook," she plainy says.
"I—"
"Look, I'm flattered that you want to go on a date with me, but why?" Eunji asks.
"It's all a misunderstanding," Jungkook says, his blush reappearing. "I didn't mean to—"
"Oh, so you don't want a date with me?"
Jungkook's mouth gapes.
"I'll just tell Naeun to cancel the double date—"
"Wait!" Jungkook panics, reaching out to stop her from leaving. "Please, hear me out."
Eunji crosses her arms. "Alright. Go on."
"I kind of owe Naeun something," Jungkook starts, hiding that the real reason is blackmail, "and I had no other choice but to think of a way to get Taehyung to go on a date with her. Taehyung refused to go unless I was coming along."
Eunji uncrosses her arms, pulling out her phone. "Thank god. I thought you actually liked me or something." She starts to type a text message.
"What's wrong with me liking you?" Jungkook asks, frowning.
"No offence, but you're too... I don't know how to put it."
"Not female?" Jungkook raises an eyebrow.
Eunji snorts. "Anyway, I also happen to owe Naeun something, so I have no choice but to play along."
"I'm sorry." Jungkook scratches the back of his head, feeling awkward. He feels that was code for she's being blackmailed too.
"Not much we can do about it now. Naeun wanted me to tell you that it's happening tomorrow after school," She says.
"I guess I'll see you then."
Eunji nods. "I guess so. Anyway, bye."
Jungkook sighs, slouching his shoulders as he watches Eunji leave. He honestly has no idea how the double date will work out. Naeun must have it all under control—or at least he hopes she does.
"Are those more notes?"
Jungkook jumps, slamming his locker. "T-Taehyung?"
Taehyung grins. "I was wondering where you went off to."
"Don't scare me like that," Jungkook whines.
Taehyung arches his neck, looking beyond Jungkook. "Was that Eunji? The girl you were talking to?"
"Yes." Jungkook nods. "Which reminds me, the date is set."
"Oh?"
"Tomorrow after school. Leave it free."
Taehyung's mouth extends back into a grin. "Bold of you to ask me out on a date."
Jungkook chokes on air. "No— I didn't mean— The one with Naeun and Eunji, remember?"
Taehyung's face sours. "Do we have to?"
Jungkook tilts his head. "I thought you said Eunji and I would look good together, no?"
"I—"
"That's what I thought." Jungkook reopens his locker, grabbing what he needs for the next class.
Jungkook starts to wonder what a date would look like between them; honestly, he can't picture it. They spend all their free time together anyway, so would it be any different?
💌
After school, Jungkook managed to drag Soobin—along with Taehyung, of course, over to his place. Jungkook wants to break down Soobin's walls with a good old gaming session—and maybe even pry some information about possible notes. It was a hard job, though. Soobin isn't used to being invited over. Soobin made that clear when he was sure his mother would say no, but in the end, the permission was granted, and Soobin was more shocked than happy.
When they walk into the house, Taehyung can't help himself but yap to Jungkook's mother about the date they are going on tomorrow. Taehyung didn't mention the date being a double date.
"Jungkook and I are going on a date tomorrow," he said. And, of course, his mother makes a scene over it.
Jungkook's mum suggestively wiggles her eyebrows. "My two boys going on a date?"
"With two girls," Jungkook adds, making sure she doesn't get the wrong idea. He glares at Taehyung, hoping his eyes will tell him to stop making everything sound so homosexual. "Go setup Smash," he orders.
Taehyung winks, leaving Jungkook to his mum.
"And who's this handsome boy?" His mum asks, looking at Soobin standing awkwardly on the side.
Soobin waves. "Hi, I'm Soobin."
Jungkook nods. "Another friend from school."
Jungkook notices Soobin coyly smile at the mention of friend.
"Nice to meet you, Soobin." Jungkook's mum leans in to give Soobin a hug which he returns with an awkward back pat. "So tall and handsome," she gushes. "I'll let you boys go play your games."
Soobin turns to Jungkook. "Who are you going out on a date with?"
Jungkook rubs the back of his neck. "Well, Taehyung is going on a date with Naeun."
Soobin nods, looking deep in thought. "Then why are you going?"
"It's a double date."
"Who's the fourth?"
Jungkook frowns. What is this, an interrogation? "Eunji."
"I didn't know you liked Eunji," Soobin says.
"I don't."
"Then why are you going on a date with her?"
"W-Well— It's complicated."
Soobin's lips turn into a line. "Okay. Sorry."
Jungkook shakes his head. "No, don't be. There's no reason to be. I just—"
"Where's the bathroom?"
"Down the hall, door on the left."
Soobin nods, walking off. It's not like Soobin to ask questions. And Jungkook does find it a little suss that he wanted to know who he's going out on a date with; however, Jungkook is treading carefully with this thought, thinking about how he oh so wrongly accused Jimin of writing the notes.
💌
Taehyung is teaching Soobin how to play Smash while Jungkook scrolls down Instagram.
"Up B!" Taehyung shouts as Soobin's character falls off the stage.
"I did! I pressed it."
"You were pressing A, not B." Taehyung chuckles.
"This is too hard." Soobin pouts. Soobin isn't a natural when it comes to video games, so of course, he has no chance against someone as skilled as Taehyung; however, Jungkook didn't think Soobin would be this bad.
"Jungkook, it's your turn," Soobin says, passing the controller over to Jungkook.
They're playing winner plays on, and Taehyung has won every game so far. Jungkook's mind is too occupied to play well, and Soobin—like previously stated—just sucks at the game
"Bring it on, Jungkook." Taehyung says.
"I'll win this time," Jungkook says, choosing Pikachu. "My Pikachu will destroy your dumb Mario."
"You guys are so violent with this game," Soobin says, laughing nervously.
After a close game—Jungkook losing all three stocks, Taehyung only losing two—being the sore loser Jungkook is, he jumps onto Taehyung, pinning him down to the ground. "You cheat!"
"How?! Mario is the most honest character in the game—other than Ike."
Jungkook freezes, their faces only inches apart. His cheeks turn pink once again. It's not like they've never play fought before, but Jungkook has these feelings he's trying to suppress now. If he were to lean in just a little bit more, their lips could connect. A kiss. Jungkook could kiss Taehyung right now. What's stopping him?
"Um... Guys? I'm still here," Soobin says. Jungkook snaps out of his trance, removing himself from Taehyung.
"Thought you were going to kiss me," Taehyung says, laughing awkwardly.
Jungkook laughs along. Yes. Laugh it out.
💌
Night comes, and Jungkook sees Soobin off to the door.
"Thank you for inviting me over," Soobin says. "I've never been over to a classmate's place."
"No need to thank me. I should thank you for coming and putting up with us," Jungkook says, grinning.
Soobin laughs. "Next time, maybe I'll win a game."
Jungkook nods. "It's your first time playing, so you'll only get better from now on."
Soobin smiles, nodding "Oh, my mum is here. See you at school tomorrow."
"Bye." Jungkook watches Soobin get into his mum's car before returning to his room. Jungkook didn't manage to get any info this time, but he did spend some nice bonding time with the boy.
When he reaches his door, he finds Taehyung snooping through his drawers. "What are you doing?"
Taehyung's head snaps to the doorway, cautiously closing the drawer. "I was getting bored waiting for you, so I decided to, um, go exploring?"
Jungkook furrows his brows.
Taehyung chuckles, scratching the back of his head. "Well, if you don't have a problem—"
"Don't go through my stuff," Jungkook warns. "That drawer is off limits." It's where he keeps the draft notes that he didn't get round to throwing out. Hopefully, Jungkook got here before Taehyung could go through them.
"You don't have to keep stuff from me." Taehyung pouts. "I tell you everything."
"I was joking. There's nothing special in that drawer," Jungkook lies.
"Then..." Taehyung's hands are back on the drawer, but before he can open it, Jungkook lunges himself across the room.
"I said, don't go through my stuff!" Jungkook shouts, pinning Taehyung down into a familiar position.
"Funny seeing you like this again," Taehyung says, looking up at Jungkook with a slight smirk.
Taehyung lips look so tempting. Jungkook wants to close the gap between them so bad. The way Taehyung's hair is ruffled messily makes Jungkook think of not-so-innocent things. Jungkook removes himself from Taehyung and tries to hide his blushing face.
"Were you going to try and kiss me again?" Taehyung asks.
"Shut up. Don't make me–"
"Pin me down again?" Taehyung finishes Jungkook's sentence. "Or maybe I can pin you down this time?"
This is not happening. "Taehyung!" Jungkook groans, frustrated. "Put the game back on."
"As you say, princess," Taehyung teases. "Anything else? Need a drink? A massage?"
Jungkook rolls his eyes. He's starting to regret agreeing to let him stay the night–especially after what he went through last week. He doesn't even bother replying to Taehyung's sass. Instead, he decides to let out his frustration by beating the shit out of Taehyung in Smash this time.
