Part 6 - Wedding Arrangements

The Ambassador was nervous. He couldn't help but feel uneasy about Nate's disguise. Though Nate had assured him that the queen or princess had never seen him before, he was still on edge. Luckily for them both, the queen had poor eyesight, and required spectacles to see all the details of things. She wouldn't be able to figure it out anyway.

Nate glanced over at him. He nodded over to the queen, subtly. "Oh, your majesty! I am the ambassador to King Nathan, here by your invitation. I'm afraid that King Nathan had a serious affair to attend to, and could not be here with us. However, he does wish to present the princess with a gift." He said.

"Oh, I would send for her, but I have just heard that Stephanie has come down with a mild fever, so she is in her room recovering as of now." The queen said. Matthew, who was often allowed to sit in on these smaller meetings, shifted uncomfortably where he stood before regaining his posture, before anyone noticed.

"Of course my queen. However, King Nathan would want her to have this." Josh took a deep breath before confidently motioning to Nate, dressed as a page, and holding the box with the necklace. Nate, pretending to be only slightly nervous, walked up to the queen and bowed.

"On behalf of uh, King Nathan, I present this engagement gift to you." He opened the box to reveal a beautiful, glittering, and slightly gaudy necklace. The queen gasped with delight.

"Oh, thank you, ambassador! I'm sure Princess Stephanie will be quite pleased." She said with a smile.

The Ambassador gave a small sigh of relief, as Nate stepped back. "May I inquire, Your Excellency, if you've set a date for the wedding?" The Ambassador asked.

"Will a week from today do?" Asked the queen, happily.

"NEXT WEEK?!"

Everyone in the room looked over to the side of the throne room. Preminger was standing there, shocked. He looked panicked. Noticing his mistake, he snapped out of it, and smiled. "A most wise and... thoughtful decision, Your Majesty."

Though the queen, ambassador, and Nate all brushed it off as an odd quirk, Matthew's eyes were glued on him for a little longer. No one had seemed to take note of it, but Matthew had noticed that the gold started to run low just before Preminger went on his mysterious journey. But Matthew didn't suspect him, no. Preminger was faithful to the queen, working for her for 10 years. She openly told her people that without him, she would be lost. How could a man as honorable as him be a traitor? But despite his years of service, and the trust of the queen, Matthew still couldn't argue with the facts, that being that Preminger was suspicious. Of course, he dared not mention this to the queen, but it was constantly burning in the back of his mind.

The Ambassador cut off his thoughts. "Excellent. I will, um, send for King Nathan so that he may meet his new bride." Nate smiled at Josh, almost too eagerly, overjoyed that his plan worked. He thought that he could get away with it, considering that no one would pay attention to the page, except for Matthew, of course, who had a sneaking suspicion that he had seen him somewhere before.

Nate noticed Matthew staring at him suspiciously, and bit his lip. Trying to move the conversation along, he kicked Josh in the leg in a manner that no one would notice, telling him to continue. "But for now, Your Excellency, I'm afraid we must depart." Josh turned on his heel and practically ran out of the room, Nate following close behind.

"Well, I'm glad we got that all sorted out." The queen said, clapping her hands together as she rose from her throne. "Now where is-" Her eyes landed on Matthew. "Oh! Matthew, since you're here, please tell Stephanie that the date has been set."

Matthew gave her a polite smile and bowed. "Of course, Your Highness." He said politely, before leaving the throne room, off to tell the girl he loved when she was getting married.

*Okay, I am loving this so much that I may just have to do non-stop chapters, as annoying as people find that.*
