Part 29 - Jailbreak

Cristina was done crying. She was singing a sweet little lullaby, to the tune of the song she sang with Nate. The guard, who had been underestimating her the whole time, was finally starting to drift off to sleep. Meanwhile, Cristina had been messing around with straw she found in the cell. She also pulled a very thin pin out of her hair, still stuck from the wig.

She twisted them together, still singing as the guard got closer and closer to sleep. She bent the pin enough to make it into a hook and attached it to all the straw, bundled together to make a hook. When it seemed as if the guard was fully asleep, she leaned in with the hook and slid it through the prison door, hooking  the ring of keys from his side. The hook was just long enough to reach.

The jingle of the keys was loud enough to stir the guard, but not fully wake him. Cristina froze; not daring to make a single sound until she was satisfied that he was asleep. When she was convinced, the pulled back the hook and took the keys in her hand. She stood up and unlocked the door from the inside, before running out as fast as she could.

She had barley gotten three feet when the guard's head drooped so much that his helmet fell down over his face, waking him with a shock. He immediately saw he door open, but Cristina managed to hide behind a wall, watching him pass by her unnoticed.

She rounded the corner, but realized her mistake quickly. She ran into the chestplate of another guard. He grabbed her by the arms, tightly. Still determined, she head-butted him and ran off in the other direction. The first guard caught up, seeing the other in pain. "Was the girl here?"

The other guard nodded, still holding his head. "Which way did she go?"

"I have no idea." The second guard said. "She hits hard."

"Alright, I'll go left, you go right. We'll meet back here if we can't find her." And the first guard ran off.

Little did either of them know, Cristina hadn't gone far in either direction. She had gone only a few feet before hiding in another cell. Making sure the coast was clear, she came back out, only to find the second guard again. This time, he had her in a headlock.

Hearing the commotion, the first guard came back around. "Thought you could escape, could you?" He turned to the guard holding her. "I'll lock her up."

"I'm to take her to the castle." The second guard said. Both Cristina and the guard looked confused.

"What?" They said in unision.

"Preminger's orders." He said.

That's when it hit her. He wasn't content with her in the dungeons. He wanted her DEAD. Was that what happened to Matthew? She didn't know, but she wouldn't let the same thing happen to her. But she had to use this to her advantage, anyway.

"Alright then. Take her." The guard said. He left them, going back to patrol the halls.

The second guard took a surprisingly willing Cristina, unaware that he was helping her in her plan. As soon as they left the dungeons and got into the hallway, Cristina stomped on his foot. "Ow!"

He dropped his hold on her, allowing Cristina to run down the hall. She had to get away. Maybe, if she was lucky, she could somehow stop or prevent the wedding. But the guard was close behind, as he grabbed her arm. With her free arm, she punched his face, but with his helmet down over his face, it only hurt her arm.

Distracted from the mild pain, the guard pushed her up against the wall, trapping her with his arms. "Cristina, stop!"

Surprised, she calmed down a bit. Why would he use her name? The guard took off his helmet. "Although, then again, I guess I deserve that for letting you get captured in the first place." He chuckled.

"Nate!" Before Nate could say anything else, something came over her. She wrapped her arms around him, hugging him tightly. Then she remembered what happened the last time they met. She let go.

"Oh, um... I'm sorry, I forgot that-"

Nate didn't listen. He pulled Cristina in by the waist and kissed her. After a second, she leaned into it and kissed him back. When they finally separated, Cristina was laughing.

"What?" He asked.

"I guess we both love our disguises." She said.

"I guess we do." Nate's smile suddenly fell. "The wedding is happening soon. We have to do something."

"But what?"

"I know you have nothing to do with the Princess's death. I believe you when you say it's Preminger. But we have to stop that wedding."

"And how do you plan to do that?"

"Isn't it obvious?" He said. He flipped his helmet down. "A disguise."
