Part 28 - Honesty (Part 2)

Cristina had finally fallen asleep and was slumbering as peacefully as she could. Skip was standing outside the cell window, watching her and making sure she was okay. The sound of clunking wheels came up behind him. It was Herve, coming up with his cart still attached.

"Skip! Glad I found you, friend!" He said. "It's the princess. She's in trouble."

"What? I thought she-" Skip cut himself off, looking at Cristina. She was still sleeping. "Show me, quick!"

..........

Meanwhile, Matthew was still slamming up against the walls. He had managed to locate a pickax, but it was rusted and dull. It wasn't working very well.

A rock managed to get un-stuck, but it landed on Stephanie's foot. Being in heels, she decided to take them off. Even weirder, she had finally given up on her dress and, (much to Matt's uncomfort,) now she was only wearing the white, shapeless knee-length underdress. Eventually, they both got used to it, and by this point, the white dress was actually shades of grey and brown.

P.S: Based on the time period, this means that Steph was in her UNDERWEAR. And she was ALONE with a MAN. So... pretty scandalous.

Stephanie picked up the rock and found that it broke in half. The outside was oddly dark-colored, as well as completely spherical. But the inside was filled with purple-colored crystals. Stephanie smiled at it, then smiled at Matt.

Finally, Matthew gave up, throwing the pick on the ground in anger. He was screaming in fury, when Stephanie slammed her hand over his mouth.

"What if they're still here? I would rather they think we're dead then come back to finish the job." She said. Matthew nodded slowly as she removed her hand.

"It's hopeless." He said. He sat down against the wall, his arms resting on his knees. "I'm sorry, Stephanie."

Stephanie sighed and sat down next to him. He shyed away from her. At first, she looked confused, until Matthew awkwardly nodded his head towards the way she was dressed. She gave a small, "ah."

"Do you know why I didn't want to marry King Nathan?" She asked.

"Because you weren't ready to get married?"

"No, not that." She said. "I was already in love with someone else." Matthew looked at her, seeing her staring right at him. He knew what she was talking about, but he had to have confirmation; just to make sure he wasn't crazy. Suddenly, her dress didn't seem like the strangest thing in the room.

"I was in love with my best friend. The man who taught me so much." She said.

"But- I'm not a king. I can't give you what he can." Matthew said. Despite how awkward he should have felt, he felt as if the both of them were being more honest than they had been in their entire lives. He found himself getting closer to her; physically and mentally.

"Well..." Stephanie picked up the rock that landed on her foot. "I think you're like this." She showed it to him.

"A rock?" He raised an eyebrow, but he was smiling, sort of confused.

Stephanie chuckled. "Unassuming on the outside..." She cracked it open, showing him the crystals. "But a treasure within."

Matthew smiled. "Stephanie, I-" He cut himself off. "May I speak freely, your highness?"

"Go ahead."

"I love you."

Stephanie sighed with relief. "I love you, too." She said. The two of them stared at each other, finding themselves slowly coming towards each other. The lantern beside them started flickering a bit.

And then they finally took a moment to kiss.

Slowly, they both pulled back. Matt's hand hovered above her cheek. He was afraid to touch it. Stephanie took his hand and placed it on her own cheek. "Matthew, I'm alone with a man, trapped in the dark, I'm in my underwear, and we just kissed. I think touching my cheek is a bridge we crossed a long time ago."

Matt nodded and brushed a hair out of her face. "We'll get out of here. I promise."
