Part 17 - The "Princess" Has Returned!
It had hit midnight. Josh snapped his pocketwatch closed then glanced over at Nate, still dressed as the page. He nodded subtly, disappointed. "It's official, then." Josh said, turning to the queen. "Due to the disappearance of the princess, the wedding to King Dominick is cancelled."
The queen looked heartbroken, terrified, and all together horrible. Meanwhile, Preminger regained his normal stiff, regal posture. Just as Josh and Nate were about to leave, the doors to the throne room were flung open.
"Your Highness, wait!" Matthew stood in the doorway, looking frantic. All eyes turned to him. He gestured towards the door, biting his lip, and bending into a low bow. "May I present... Princess Stephanie."
Nate and Josh's eyes went wide, as they shared a shocked look with one another. Preminger gave a small gasp. The queen stood up hopefully, trying to see. "Darling?"
Christina, taking a deep breath, rounded the corner, dressed in Stephanie's clothes, and wearing the wig that Matthew had gotten. She looked so incredibly nervous, but the rest of the room had brushed it off as embarrassment from running away. She walked across the throne room, all eyes on her.
Then she tripped.
She quickly got back up, leaning into the queen's arms. She wrapped her arms around Christina, with all the love she would give to her daughter. "Stephanie! You're back!" Matthew quietly snuck around behind her and pocketed the queen's spectacles. "Where have you been?"
Christina pulled back. "I'm sorry. I should not have run away." She said.
That's when Preminger knew something was going on. Perhaps something had gone down at the cabin, and she couldn't admit that she had been captured? Had the princess actually killed Mark and Jack?
"Promise me you'll never do it again." The queen said.
"I don't plan on it." Christina replied.
"I still think we should cancel the wedding." Josh huffed, crossing his arms. Nate coughed and shot him an angry look. "Um, but an agreement is an agreement. The wedding is back on! King Dominick is...is.. is due tomorrow!" He shouted.
"Wonderful!" The queen said, clapping her hands together.
"Um, tomorrow?" Christina repeated, eyes wide.
"And then, only a few short days before the wedding." The queen said, back to her usual perky self. She took a quick look around. "Has anyone seen my spectacles?" She asked.
"If you'll excuse me, I'll be off to see to the... arrangements." Preminger said, gritting his teeth. Matthew, still suspicious of him, watched his every step, eventually seeing something drop from his shoe. Matthew went to pick it up. He brought it to his nose, instantly being overwhelmed with a familiar smell.
"From a silver fir tree? What's Preminger doing in the western forest?" He asked himself. Just as he was about to follow him out, the queen stopped him.
"Matthew, wait! I want to hear all about how you found Stephanie!" She called.
"I um... I..." Knowing he couldn't get out of this, he instead gave up. "Of course, Your Highness."
