A New Year
She'd been sitting there, paper in hand, for almost three hours. The sky had gone from blue to hues of red to black and she was still as clueless as she was when she started.
Her dilemma began when her friend reminded her that they had promised to attend a dinner with their friends at the new Italian Place and that they all had to state their New Years Resolutions.
Over the years, Darlene had fulfilled many resolutions and she'd also forgotten about many of them. She'd fulfilled things like 'take a break' and 'reduce eating junk food' and she'd forgotten about her New Year resolutions to watch fewer movies and read more books very conveniently. It was the same thing every year, she had a long list of resolutions and some things got crossed off while some didn't.
This year, it was a bit different. She was almost clueless about what she wanted to achieve the following year. She'd already gotten into her dream college with brilliant grades. She knew that a resolution like 'exercise more' was useless with her and she didn't want to waste her resolution. For the first time, she wanted to have a resolution that she knew she could fulfill because the people she was having dinner with weren't the type to forget anything.
Cobie still remembered the contents of the embarrassing love letter she sent to Tom. Mike still hadn't forgotten about the time when she'd spilled orange soda all over herself because she was shaking with fear after a horror movie. Tara still taunted her about all her forgotten resolutions because she was promised that there would be more book discussions and that never happened. Hence, she knew that not being able to keep her resolution was not an option at all.
45 minutes later, after a lot of contemplation, she knew what her resolution was.
6 hours later
"So Darlene, what is your resolution or rather, what are your resolutions for 2016?" Cam asked her, grinning widely because he expected her to list out at least five resolutions.
"Nothing," she said with a smile.
"You're joking, right? You always have at least ten resolutions, what's so different this time around?" Tara urged her.
"It's a New Year, that's all." She raised her glass, controlling her urge to burst out laughing at the look of pure shock on her friends' faces.
