Chapter 5
Alice continued staring at me as I stared at Black Jack. I took a seat in my chair, turned towards John.
John cleared his throat, facing Alice. "It's nice that you have clothes on."
Alice shrugged as she sat back on the couch. She moved her brown hair out of her face. "I think I look great either way."
I faced John as I spoke to Alice. "What's the point of making rooms disappear?"
"Running, of course. Unlike most, we can't stay in one place for long." Alice grinned. "Someone's always after my brother and me. I have to hide everything until I can pick things up and move on."
"Right," John said. "But what about the poor man you played? He seemed very fond of you."
Alice smiled. "A man is fond of any woman who makes him feel fascinating. And I get free dinners."
John nodded. "Right. What about the codes and systems you magicians seem to have? Why did that have to come about?"
"We're criminals, and there's only two of us who have the system. It's my brothers and mine."
"There's a third person in play," I said.
Alice paused.
I turned to her. "Your brother wouldn't kill you said. Someone is paying him aren't they?"
Alice stayed quiet.
"Coming from a low income home and high skill in... 'magic,' the two of you are much like someone who raised you. Not a mother, most women wouldn't sell themselves unless desperate. Back to the income, you both have never had money. Now that it's in his grasp, why wouldn't he take it. After all, he knows how to run from the law. He's been doing it his whole life." I smiled and turned to John. "Who and why are the questions we must ask. We know your brother loves money and can run from the law. The person paying him knows that at least. So our benefactor is someone who wants his skills and knowledge of the city." I turned to Alice. "They wanted someone who could use rabbit holes and vanish acts."
Alice remained silent.
John's brows furrowed as he turned to Alice. "How do we know she's not a part of this? You're even revealing your system to us."
"She's not. She's clueless," I said.
Alice glared at me. "Clueless as I am, I could find him faster than you."
I raised a brow.
Alice smiled. "Every animal leaves a print behind. That's why hunting exists."
I stood from my chair and walked to her, to whisper in her ear. "Tell me about the rabbit holes."
Alice let out a small laugh. "Seduction isn't a suit you wear well. However, I'll tell you anyway. Just sit down before you hurt yourself."
My brows furrowed as I sat in my chair.
Alice smiled. "There are multiple rabbits as rabbits are magicians. However, I'm the black rabbit, and my brother is the white one. He's the better magician, therefore, he wins the most money. I usually follow him around, living in the same area and so on, so I can ask for money easily. This makes me Alice the Black Rabbit."
"So that's why your cases were so close," John said.
"It wasn't a coincidence at all." I looked at John.
John looked at me with furrowed brows. "It wasn't the same person either."
"They're related with the same mother and father. They might as well be." I looked at Alice.
"Can I say the same about you and Mycroft?"
I quickly turned to John. "I'm still trying to make him take a DNA test."
"You're brothers. Get over it."
I turned to Alice. "Where does Lewis Carroll become part of the system? You just said you were 'Alice the Black Rabbit.'"
Alice smiled. "Didn't I just say I followed him around? Do you remember the story at all?"
"So you're brother's the Mad Hatter," John said. "Well, Hatter the White Rabbit?"
"No. He's the White Rabbit."
My brows furrowed. "Someone else is the Hatter."
"Anyone stupid enough to throw themselves into the system or learn about it." Alice smiled. "Congradulations, Mr. Holmes. You're the first." Glass shattered loudly by the front door, and Alice's eyes widened.
We all quickly moved to the window, checking the scene of the broken glass. Mrs. Hudson was already at the scene of the crime.
"God. That woman." I opened the window. "Mrs. Hudson, do not touch anything!"
"It's glass. Someone could get hurt," she replied.
"DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING!" I turned to Alice. "You stay here. John, come with me. It's time to look for our Cheshire Cat."
