Uncomfortable encounters

It was only moments before opening time by now. Jeremiah had changed into the new clothes given to her by the Staffbot Emanuel send. She had managed to clean up the coffee stain well enough, so it at least wasn't noticeable or sticky anymore, and had spend the remainder of her time cleaning up the frontal area of the Daycare. While the attendant was cleaning up the play aria, as she had instructed. It had tried to start up a conversation a few times, though she never gave direct answers, if she gave any answers at all. After a while, it had gotten the message and just did it's work in silence. If the animatronic came too close for comfort, she would often go behind the desk, and check some of the papers and documents on the regular kids. She didn't check those often, most of the information in them didn't change that much to begin with. Though she had noticed she'd forgotten about a few things, mostly minor stuff, like some kid's food preferences.

At that moment, the door to the daycare went open, and a fit woman with long, almond brown hair walked in with her 3 kids. "Good morning Mrs. Brooks. You're here early today." Mrs. Brooks sighed deeply. "Well, yes. You see, my Hubby and I really need to go out of state for a few days, family problems you know, and we wanted to be able to leave as early a-." Before she could finish her sentence, The daycare Attendant had noticed the kid's arrival. "Good morning New Friends! How are you today!" He said with his high, loud voice. The youngest of Mrs. Brooks kids, 3-year-old Emilia, made an ear-piercing scream and hid behind her mother. While the two older boys, 5-year-old Stephen and 6-year-old Milan, just kind of looked questioningly at the animatronic.

"What's that doing here?" Mrs. Brooks said before the animatronic could try to comfort the youngest of the three. It seemed taken aback by her reaction. "Didn't you hear the news? The animatronic that used to work at the theater has been repurposed as the new Daycare attendant." Jeremiah explained. Mrs. Brooks looked shocked. "The 'new' Daycare attendant? Weren't you supposed to be the attendant?" She asked. Jeremiah shrugged her shoulders, acting like she wasn't bothered by the fact her position had changed. "Well, I'm just the assistant now. But don't worry, I'm not really demoted or anything, the title just changed." She said, but looking at Mrs. Brooks face, she guessed she didn't fully believe that. "Being replaced by a robot, that sounds awful." Mrs. Brooks exclaimed. Jeremiah noticed sounds coming from up the hall, another family must be on their way to the Daycare. "Well, it's honestly not that bad." She said, even though she couldn't agree with those words. But she had to make the situation sound good for both the kids' and the parents' sake.

"Anyways, we should get you all checked in." She said, looking at the three children. Stephen had started poking the animatronic's leg, who had turned its complete focus towards the child. "Sun, could you handle that?" She asked, remembering what Emanuel had told her, even if she hated it. She turned towards Emilia, who was still half hidden behind her mother's leg. "Well, big girl, what about we go say hi to mister Sun. And then, we can play with the blocks until your friends arrive! What do you think about that?" Emilia responded by running up to her and burying her head in her legs. Jeremiah picked up the girl. The animatronic must have heard her, as it was turning towards them with a big, friendly smile on its face. "Hello little girl!" it said, as it calmly approached. Jeremiah had to keep herself from flinching back. "See, it's not that scary." She said, as she tried to get Amilia to look at the animatronic, so it could scan her face. She guessed this would have happened. She didn't understand how the company thought this would work. The animatronic's size and loud voice were just very startling and scary, especially for young kids. Jeremiah informed the new attendant on the children's names, before putting down Amilia and leading her towards the play area, where she quickly distracted herself. This gave Jeremiah the time to turn back towards Mrs. Brooks, who was eyeing the animatronic. It was trying to entertain the two boys, who had seemingly decided to play some play-pretend game in the play structures. She turned towards Mrs. Brooks. "Who'll be picking them up this evening." She asked, remembering that the children's mother had mentioned she'd be out of the state. Mrs. Brooks gave her a name, and showed a picture of the girl she was talking about. She then said her goodbyes to her kids, and left shortly after.

It didn't take too long before the rest of the kids for that day arrived. There were never that many children present in the Daycare on Tuesdays. But even Jeremiah noticed that the number had been significantly smaller then usual. Most parents had heard about the changes, and had decided against bringing their kids back to the daycare. And the ones who did drop their kids off all had similar reactions as Mrs. Brooks to the news. Two families had even decided to just leave with their kids, not let them be checked in. Jeremiah completely understood them, she wasn't sure she could be comfortable having that thing around her kids if she had children. Several visitors had been absolutely terrified of the robot. Though she had to admit, the animatronic did a surprisingly well job at keeping it together. At least, if it could even "feel" anything towards the kids and parents who obviously hated it or feared it.

Her aunt, Julia, had been amongst one of the last parents to arrive. She was honestly surprised she actually came. Her son, Jay, had been in the Theater on the day the incident happened. He was one of the only kids present at the Theater incident that still visited this section of the Pizzaplex. It had taken Jeremiah a long time to ensure Julia that Freddy's was still a safe place for her niece and nephew. And she had guessed that the only reason Julia even considered letting her children come was because she had promised her that the kids would be fine under her watch. That she was going to take care of them. Prior to the incident, Jay might have been Sun's biggest fan. He absolutely loved watching the animatronic preform and owned about every single merchandise piece of the performer available. She never understood why he liked that robot so much. But seeing him that morning, looking at his wide, scared eyes and trembling figure as the Daycare attendant approached, she honestly regretted ever convincing Julia to bring her kids back to that place.

Jay had been hanging around Jeremiah the whole time, and often stopped playing in the middle of whatever game he was playing whenever Jeremiah left, or the animatronic got too close. She had never seen the 9-year-old this timid before. His 5-year-old sister, Hanna, started copying his behavior. So now the two of them were basically always at her side.

She was now sitting with a small group of children who were quietly drawing. Jay was sitting nearby, but didn't join in. She saw one of his friends, a boy named David, come towards them. "Hey! Jay! We're gonna play Pirates in the ball pit! Wanna join?" He shouted. Jay glanced over at the animatronic. "I'm fine, imma just stay here a bit." He answered. "Oh, c'mon Jay! It'll be fun, I promise! You can be captain this time!" He gave no sign of wanting to move, so Jeremiah went to sit next to him. "Is everything okay, Jay-Jay?" She asked, fully well knowing what the problem was. The boy didn't say anything. "It's about Sun, isn't it?" He nodded.

The animatronic was crouching in the middle of the playground, 2 very young kids which Jeremiah had seen only once or twice before were talking with it. Those two were pretty much the only children that actively interacted with the animatronic, most other kids kept their distance or were too wrapped up in their game to notice the attendant make any effort to interact with them. At least no one was crying, most of the kids present weren't aware of what happened at the theater anyways, or were too young to realize that this was the same animatronic. They were mostly scared of how big he was. "I promise you that won't happen again. Sun is different, see, he looks different, doesn't he?" She felt uncomfortable not being able to be honest about her own fears with someone she was so close with. But she just couldn't watch Jay spend the entire day tiptoeing around. It was mostly due to her own meddling that he was here now, after all. "Why did he do it?" Jay suddenly asked. Jeremiah wasn't sure how to answer. Truth was, no one fully understood why the animatronic had done what it did. She could try to tell him about the assumption that its code somehow failed, that it malfunctioned, but she wasn't sure if Jay'd understand. Or if he would find it a reassuring enough answer. "He was sick." She decided on telling him. "He was sick, and no one knew it. He didn't know what he was doing because of his sickness." Jay looked at her. "Like when I thought I saw a monster and accidentally hurt Hanna when I was very sick?" He asked her. She remembered Aunt Julia telling her about that. Jay had had a pretty high fever a few months ago, and had hallucinated something when his sister had been in their bedroom, she didn't remember the full story, but it had ended up with Jay accidentally punching his sister in the face. "Yes, like that." Jay seemed to think for a minute. "But he's a robot. Robots can't get sick, right?" She hadn't thought of that. "Well, the robots at Freddy's are special. They can get sick." He seemed to find that a logical explanation. "But he isn't sick anymore, he's not going to do that again." She could see she had managed to calm Jay down a bit, but he still seemed anxious. "You know what? I'll go with you to the ball pit, and I'll stay nearby, so you can always come to me if something happens." He nodded. And stood up. "David, wait!" he yelled, as he started making his way towards the pit, dragging her with him.

She sat down on a chair not too far from the pit, where she'd have a clear view of both Jay, and the rest of the daycare. She still needed to watch over the other kids too. She hadn't been sitting down for long when she heard jingling bells approaching. The animatronic was coming her way, clearly the two kids weren't interested in it anymore. "May I sit here?" it asked her. She wanted to say "no", but it would be unwise to act hostile towards her "co-worker" in front of the kids. Especially since she convinced most of them that he wasn't scary. "Suit yourself." She mumbled instead. For some reason, the animatronic took one of the child sized chairs, resulting in it's knees nearly hitting it's own face as it sat down. There was a bit of quiet between them. Jeremiah hadn't been sitting this close to the animatronic since it's Theater days. It felt extremely uncomfortable. "It's nice, watching the kids play, isn't it?" it said. Waiting for her to respond, but she just ignored it, so it continued. "I hadn't imagined it would be like this. It's my first day outside of maintenance after all. It's all so... big!" Jeremiah looked at the animatronic, confusion in her eyes. Didn't it remember the Theater? She was aware of the fact that back in its theater days, its program was much simpler. But it had acted against its code, so surely it must have had some knowledge of its surroundings back then too? "I'm sure Moon'll love it too!" It exclaimed. "How could you know that?" she asked. She was able to see the attendant's eyes practically shining when she responded. "We share a body, you know. I can hear him, and feel his presence. He can't really see through my eyes when I'm active, but he can hear me. So, we talk, in our minds. Anything I observe, he can access as well, though he can't see it as clearly as I can without the eyes." Jeremiah wondered if "Moon" would remember, after all, that one was the one who went against its code. But she decided to not question either one of them.

Another silence fell, Jeremiah decided that she should go walk around a bit. Jay was fully emerged in his game by now, she doubted he'd notice she'd moved. Though she would stay close, as promised. She started standing up, but before she could leave, the animatronic started talking again. "I heard what Mrs. Brooks said. You hate me, don't you? Is it because I took your position? I- I didn't know. They never told me. I don't mean to be your replacement." Jeremiah was losing her patience. Yes, she was salty about the position, but that didn't matter right now. She just didn't understand how that thing could talk to her, to the kids, to literally anyone after what it had done. After it had almost killed-. "No, don't think about it." she whispered to herself. She could feel herself breaking down again, just like she had that day. She needed to be away from that thing, right now. "I believe we have started off on the wrong foot, but I'm sure things can be different." She heard the animatronic say. It took all her strength to not scream out the next words. She didn't want to frighten the kids. "Listen, I tolerate your presence because I have to for my job, and for the kids. That doesn't mean I want anything to do with you. Leave. Me. Alone. I didn't ask for you to be here." With that, she walked away, to the opposite side of the daycare. She would have left the place if she could, and technically, she could. She was allowed to leave and take a break after all. But there wasn't a hair on her body that would allow that thing to be alone with the kids. So she'd stay, she'd stay, and try to endure the next 6 months of her life to the best of her ability. Then, she'd leave the place for good.
