Chapter 11

The group walked along the forest path, Kayla in the lead with Erza trailing behind, on the lookout if anyone would jump out and try to attack the group.

Though unknown to the others, Kayla also had her guard up, though she was excited, she was also fearful, if any of them found her, it would be game over, the others would know who she really was, and who the others really were, and soon the whole guild would be scared of them, and they would be alone again. Feared by everyone again.

The trees started to thin out and the group was soon standing in the village. Kayla looked around, she hadn't been in the village for long periods of time, but she used to visit every once in a while. Eria had been able to transform into a more humanoid form to go with her, though her eyes were still dragon-like.

"Kayla, is that you?" A cracked voice asked, causing Kayla to turn around, seeing an old lady with her gray hair in a bun.

"Miyu!" Kayla exclaimed, running up to the lady. "It's been so long!"

"You've grown up so much, the last time I saw you you were only up to my knees!"

Kayla laughed a bit, her cheeks flushing. "Well, that was ten years ago."

"Where did you go, it got quiet after you just disappeared." Miyu looked at her.

"Oh, I went to travel around the world." Kayla said. "I met some awesome people, and just recently I joined FairyTail."

"Oh! I'm so proud of you!" Miyu said, smiling widely. "You've made you're way in the world!"

"Yeah."

Suddenly someone cleared their through behind Kayla, causing her to look over, she smiled. "Sorry Erza." She said with a sheepish smiled. "I just had to say hi."

"Well, I think catching up is wonderful, but you should do that after the job." Erza told her sternly.

"Right. I'll talk with you later Miyu! It'll be nice to catch up!"

"Of course. Be safe on your little job!" Miyu told Kayla, watching as the young girl ran up to the group with a warm smile.

"Okay, so what's this job about?" Kayla asked, looking up at Erza.

Erza looked at her, "You don't know?" She asked.

Kayla shrugged. "I just know it requires a lightning Mage."

"Then let me explain. During some storms, lightning as been shooting up from the ground, and it's a danger to the villagers who live here."

Kayla placed her hand to her chin. "Got it, and they need a lightning Mage because it might mean someone needs to absorb the magic." She said.

"Exactly." Erza said.

"Then let's get started, 'Mission 'Search for the Cause of Lightning' go!" She exclaimed with a large smile.

"Well, we might not have to go searching for it." Erza pointed out, looking at the sky, "There's a storm coming our way."

Kayla looked at the sky, seeing the large gray clouds rolling in. She sniffed the air, making sure the others didn't notice. The storm was going to be a big one. "We should find cover. It's moving fast." She muttered, looking back at the others, the scent of rain was getting stronger and stronger by the minute.

"How can you tell?" Happy asked.

"Well, everyone in the village sort of has a sixth sense." Kayla explained. While this was true that the villagers could sense storms, she could practically predict the weather for the next day, since she can smell the air and feel and change in the climate better than any of the villagers due to her enhanced senses. "It's something I've grown up with." She said.

"Woah! That's so cool!" Natsu exclaimed.

Kayla blushed a bit, "It's not that cool, it's just predicting the weather." She muttered. Around them, the light started to dim, and Kayla looked up, seeing that clouds were already covering the sun. "Here, let's hurry, I happen to know where a great cave is." She said, walking along the forest path.

"You must of really liked it here." Gray stated. "You seem relaxed and at home."

Kayla glanced back at him, then looked back at the road in front of them. "I guess you can say that. Truth is, I was here until a month before I joined FairyTail."

"But you told that lady that you traveled." Happy said, confusion in his voice.

"If I told her I was still here, she would of felt like I was avoiding her." Kayla said, "I love Miyu like she's my own grandmother, but after a certain time I had to stop seeing her." She stopped walking and looked back to the group, a smile on her face, trying not to make it looked forced. "But that's in the past. I always say to always look forwards and never look back." She spotted the stone cave a little ways ahead, and just in time, rain started to fall around them. She ran into the cave with the others following her.

Soon the rain was pouring down, soaking everything it touched.

"Man, just in time." Lucy said. "I don't want to be rained on today."

Kayla stood at the mouth of the cave, looking out, if she looked far enough, and in the right place, she could see the roof of the guild hall barely peeking out from the trees. Fear was rising in her chest, this was also the place Eria died. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, putting on a small, sad, smile.

Suddenly there as a loud zapping sound, and Kayla looked over, seeing lightning coming up from in front of her, not in the clearing, but closer to the guild hall. It reached up into the sky, touching raindrops and transferring to them, Kayla watched as the lightning filled raindrops fell to the ground, sending out a wide range of sparks that looked as if they were coming from the ground.

"It's happening." Erza said, now standing next to Kayla, causing Kayla to jump. She looked through the rain. "Is that a building?" She asked, squinting her eyes.

"I don't see anything." Kayla lied, making sure her voice wasn't shaking, and making it sound convincing. The magic this lightning gave off, the feeling. She knew it all to well. It was her trainer's. She couldn't go now, it's been months since she's been at that guild, she didn't want to go back after experiencing freedom for the first time.

"We should go check it out!" Natsu exclaimed, fire engulfing his fists. "I'm all fired up!"

"No." Kayla whispered, causing Erza to look at her.

"Why not?" She asked sternly.

Kayla looked at Erza, making sure to hide all the fear she was feeling. "The rain. The lightning's in the rain. If we go out now we risk being shocked by it." She said, covering up her fear.

"Then we try after the storm." Erza said. "In the meantime, we'll stay in here."

"Right!" All of them said, except Kayla, who was silently looking out the cave.

A while later, Kayla noticed that the rain was getting lighter, and the lightning raising up from the guild hall had vanished. She placed a hand out, a normal raindrop landing on it.

"I see it's safe to go." Erza said, stepping outside of the cave. "Let's go."

"I'm so excited!" Natsu exclaimed, running out of the cave.

Gray scoffed and walked past Kayla, stepping outside and glaring at Natsu.

"Could you be any louder?" He asked.

"Could you be any lamer?" Natsu retorted.

Kayla stifled a giggle, watching as Erza glared at them both, shutting them up.

"We don't have time to fool around." Erza told the two sternly. "I'd like to get this mission done with as soon as we can."

"I agree with Erza." Kayla said, walking up and holding back her fear. "The sooner we get this done, the soon I can catch up with the villagers."

"Right. Let's head over to the origin of the lightning." Erza said, walking out of the cave.

"Right!" Everyone said.

Kayla followed the group along the forest path, making sure to keep her breathing in check. Damn it Damn it Damn it! She thought, she didn't want to be going back there. They'll find her for sure.

Kayla was too busy thinking about her worries, she didn't realize where they were, until Gray spoke up.

"Is that a guild hall?" He asked.

Kayla looked up, her eyes widening in horror. It was right in front of her, Death's Storm.

"No. We can't go in there." Kayla said.

"And why not?" Natsu asked. "We'll have to if we want to finish this mission." His and was suddenly engulfed in fire. "And I'm itching to kick some butt!"he shouted loudly.

Kayla looked at him. "Be quiet!" She hissed, still behind the bushes. "You don't want to alert them that we're here!" Suddenly, there was a tingle in her head and her breath hitched as a loud, high pitched noise rang through it. She fell to the ground, clutching her head. Looking though blurry eyes, she saw that the others were also clutching their heads in pain.

"What's happening!?" Lucy screeched, on her knees and gripping her head tightly in pain.

Kayla watched as nets were thrown on top of each one of her friends, she was still in the forest, and she knew they couldn't see her. She saw Natsu near her and saw a dark figure ready to trap him in a net. She fought though the pain in her head and jumped out throwing him behind, back into the bushes, feeling the net cover her instead. Looking at Natsu, she smiled softly, "Go back to the guild hall." She managed to tell him. "Tell them... That... Death's Storm... Has... Found..." She trailed off, her face falling and she felt her body go limp, the noise in her head dulling as she gave up to the darkness.
