Settling In

The rest of Ezra's first day at the Jarrus home was fairly normal. He remained mostly quiet, only speaking to Hera occasionally, and instead of staying up with the others to watch a movie, he decided to go sleep earlier. Even though all he did most of the night was sit there wide awake, thinking about what the future held.

Eventually he did drift off to sleep in the early hours of the morning, and awoke to the sun peeking through his blinds. He got out of bed slowly and headed downstairs. No one else was awake yet. Or if they were they stayed in their rooms. He slowly walked into the kitchen and opened the pantry cautiously. Hera did say he could eat whatever he wanted to. He grabbed a box of cereal and placed it at the table.

As he fetched the rest of the things, he had awoken Chopper. The sleepy cat came up to Ezra and sat next to his feet, waiting for any food to fall.

"You're an odd cat, Chop." Ezra said quietly. Chopper meowed grumpily offended by Ezra's statement. "I'm sorry! You're actually a great cat!"

Chopper looked away, but still stayed where he was waiting for food. Ezra didn't give any. He wasn't sure what Chopper could and couldn't eat.

Ezra heard footsteps coming down the stairs. It was Kanan. He was wearing glasses and a sweater, and was holding some papers.

"Oh, good morning Ezra!" Kanan said walking into the kitchen. "Looks like you found breakfast okay."

Ezra nodded and finished it up. Chopper was disappointed by Ezra's lack of sharing.

"I'm about to go into the office and start work for the day, but if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask." Kanan took a piece of fruit from a bowl and started to make a cup of coffee.

"You're a teacher?" Ezra asked putting his bowl in the sink. He started to wash it.

"Yeah. I teach an online course for an online high school," Kanan told Ezra. "Sabine is actually enrolled in it. You can be too if you want."

"I don't like school," Ezra mumbled.

"I don't blame you."

"But.....I'd prefer doing online school.....I think."

"Well, you get to avoid going to a traditional high school. Which I know those can be miserable."

Ezra nodded and put his clean bowl back where he found it. He sat back at the table and stared at Kanan. "Does Hera work?"

Kanan tilted his head. He could tell Ezra was taking a liking to Hera. She did have a natural mother like charm to her. "Yes. She works the night shift at the hospital."

"Why night?" Ezra asked curiously.

"We like to be together as much as possible as a family. That's why I work from home and she works night. It allows us to do more together while still providing for the family," Kanan explained. His coffee was done and he took his mug. "She should be down soon."

Ezra nodded and watched Kanan walk into the office. He looked around the room taking in more of his surroundings. Not even a minute later he heard more footsteps coming down the stairs.

It was Hera. She looked tired, but also ready for the day. She smiled brightly at Ezra. "Good morning! Up already?"

Ezra nodded. He wasn't sure what she meant by already, until he realized it was six o'clock. He must've woke up early from nerves. Being in a new home was stressful.

"Did you get something to eat?" Hera asked while she gave Chopper his cat food.

"Yes, I did." Ezra got up from the table to see where the cat food was kept. He was hoping that maybe he'd be able to feed Chop in the future.

"I was going to make breakfast, but that's okay too! If you get hungry let me know." Hera went into the kitchen but forgot why she came in there. She put her hands on her hips looking flustered. Then the light went off in her head. "Oh!! Ezra! I have to go out and run some errands. I was wondering, would you like to come?"

"Sure," Ezra immediately said. He thought it would be better to come with her than to stay her while Kanan and Sabine would be busy with work and school.

"Alright, let me grab my things, let Kanan know, and then we can go," she said. She went to grab her purse from the counter and then entered Kanan's office. "Hey, love? I'm gonna head out to grab some things. Do you need anything?"

"Starbucks," Kanan replied in a joking tone. He got up and stood next to her.

"Alright, I'll bring back Starbucks then." She smiled.

Kanan took her hand and held it. "Are you feeling any better?"

Hera shrugged. "I think so. Yeah, mostly. I'm still feeling tired though."

"I hope you feel better soon sweetheart." He gave her a kiss and then a hug. "Have fun."

"Thanks. Have fun with teaching," she said jokingly.

They hugged one more time and Hera left to meet Ezra in the hallway. "Alright, let's go."

Ezra followed Hera to the car. He was about to get into the backseat but she insisted it was fine for him to sit in the front.

"So, where are we going?" Ezra put his seat belt on as Hera did too. He rolled down the window and she drove out of the driveway.

"Starbucks first. You can get a drink if you'd like. Then I need to get some candy for trick or treaters. I can't believe Halloween is the day after tomorrow! I also need to get some groceries. Is there anything you need?"

Ezra thought about it for a moment. "No, not that I can think of."

"Well if there is anything, don't hesitate to ask." She smiled at him for a moment but then focused on the road again.

After a few minutes on the road Ezra looked at Hera. "Are you okay?"

Hera looked very confused by the question. "What makes you ask that?"

"I overheard you taking to Kanan," Ezra explained hoping he wouldn't be in trouble.

"Ohhhh," she said. She smiled. "Yeah, I'm fine. I just came home from work last night feeling really exhausted and sick, but when I woke up I felt much better. Don't worry about me."

Ezra nodded and was going to say something but got distracted by the car pulling up into the drive-thru.

"Do you know what you want here?" Hera asked. She turned to face him while they waited their turn to order.

"Um, no. I've never had anything here," Ezra said. After he said that Hera moved so he could see the menu better. Ezra read though everything slightly overwhelmed. There's was so much to choose from. "Umm how about a pumpkin spice...Frappuccino?"

"Alright! That's a good one. I'm going to go with the pumpkin cold brew myself."

"What about Kanan?"

"We'll get him and Sabine one on the way home so they don't get all gross and warm."

Ezra nodded and a few minutes later after she ordered, they got their drinks. Hera handed him his drink. She must've gotten him the biggest size. He wasn't sure how he was gonna drink all of this, but it looked delicious.

"I can't wait for the holiday drinks," Hera said taking a sip of the cold brew. "I'm ready for Christmas."

"I've never done much for Christmas. Unless my birth parents did a lot, and I don't remember," Ezra finished quietly.

Hera felt sorry for Ezra. She frowned for a moment and then smiled again. "Well, don't worry. We're gonna do a lot for Christmas! Just gotta get Halloween over with."

"I've never really liked Halloween," Ezra said. He took another sip and began to look at the scenery.

"Eh, me either, but I do absolutely love fall." Hera smiled and pulled the car into the grocery store parking lot.

She grabbed a shopping cart and they both headed inside. Hera headed to the Halloween candy area first and looked at the selection. "Um, why don't you pick something out, that way if there's anything left it will be something you like."

Ezra nodded a little too eagerly. It must've been the caffeine getting to his brain. He went straight for the bag of chocolates and put it in the cart.

"Alright," Hera said. "Time for the boring stuff." She pulled out a list and set it down onto her purse.

Ezra kept an eye on the list to see if he spotted any of the items. When he did he grabbed it and put it in the cart. Hera was very much surprised by his help. Kanan would always help when they went grocery shopping together, but Sabine more often than not just walked along side her. Which was fine of course. That was how Sabine was.

About an hour later they returned home with the groceries and the drinks for Sabine and Kanan. Kanan was busy in a live discussion with the students, so Hera and Ezra were the ones to unload the groceries. There wasn't too much, so luckily it didn't take too long.

Kanan finished up with the chat and came out of the office. "How was the store?"

"It was good," Hera replied folding up their reusable bags. "Your drink is right here. I'll bring Sabine hers in a moment."

"Thanks sweetheart," Kanan said giving Hera a hug.

"Of course love."

Ezra watched them oddly from the corner of the room. He wasn't disgusted by their love, but maybe a tad surprised. Out of all the couples he had to stay with, none of them loved each other like this. He could see in Kanan and Hera's eyes how much they truly loved each other.

After the hug and a kiss, Kanan eyed the chocolate. He wished it was Halloween so he could have one already. He looked back at Hera. "Well, I'm gonna get back to work. I love you."

"I love you too," she replied with a smile.

After dinner that day Ezra had somehow agreed to playing Mario Kart with Sabine. She was beyond thrilled to finally have someone to play with who might actually want to play. She went on about how Kanan and Hera would play occasionally with her. Kanan was good, Hera well, not at all, but she said it was more fun to play someone her age.

It took Ezra a while to get a hang of how to play it, but once he learned it was actually kind of fun.

"Alright, let's take a little break," Sabine said setting the controller down. "So, are you going trick or treating on Halloween?"

"Are you?"

Sabine nodded. "Of course I am! Kanan will usually go out with me while Hera stays here and hands out the candy."

Ezra thought about it for a moment. "I guess I could go."

"Yay!" Sabine smiled. It will be more fun!"

Ezra gave a small smile. Sabine was more enthusiastic than she appeared to be at first.

Hera walked into the room and into the kitchen. "Having fun?"

Sabine nodded and Ezra nodded too.

"That's good to hear. Don't forget though, bed time in an hour," she told them. She started making a cup of peppermint tea.

"You must be excited for Christmas!" Sabine said with a laugh.

"Why?" Hera asked tilting her head. She took a sip of her tea and walked up to them.

"Well, peppermint tea?"

"Oh," Hera said looking at her drink. "Yeah, my stomach is hurting. This should help with it."

Sabine frowned. "Did you catch some cold at work again?"

"I hope not." Hera sighed and sat on the couch. "Luckily tonight is my day off, so hopefully that gives me some time to rest."

Chopper jumped onto the couch and started to snuggle with Ezra. His new family was different, but he was beginning to like them.
