It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Ezra Bridger turned off his laptop and put it away. He was still adjusting to this whole online school thing. Luckily he had Sabine and Kanan to help him out with it, and he had to admit, it was far nicer than a normal public school setting.

Ezra leaned back in his chair and looked around at his room. He was only here a few weeks, but it was starting to feel more like home. Hera and Kanan had gotten him a desk for school or whatever else he needed it for. New blankets for the bed as well. There were also some decor on the shelves.

He was still adjusting to his actual family now. It took time to get to know each person. His fears of being kicked out or not wanted we're almost none now. He was told something about how the adoption papers were in the finalization process.

Ezra got up and headed for downstairs. Kanan was helping Hera get some boxes out of the garage.

"What's going on?" Ezra asked. He sat down on the couch and stared and the boxes.

Hera stood with her arms folded and smiled at Ezra. "Kanan is helping me get out the Christmas decorations, or most of them."

Kanan set a box down on the ground. "There's only a few boxes left. It's front yard decorations."

"Well, those can wait. I'll let you get back to work luv." Hera gave Kanan a hug, and then he headed back to the office.

Hera sat down and stared at all the boxes. "This is gonna take a long time. Hopefully you and Sabine are up to helping."

Ezra smiled. "Of course I'm willing to help!"

"Good," Hera replied with a laugh. "Because we have three Christmas trees."

Ezra's eyes went wide. "Wait, three?!"

"Yup, so we better get started. Why don't you go get Sabine."

Ezra nodded and ran upstairs. He knocked on Sabine's door.

Sabine opened her door. "What is it?"

"Hera wants us to start decorating for Christmas."

Sabine's eyes lit up. "Yes!" She closed her door and ran downstairs before Ezra could even respond.

Ezra came back down as well and went up to Sabine who was opening  up a box filled with garland.

"Hey, mom? Can you maybe put up the tree while we get the garland up?" Sabine's asked.

Hera nodded and got up slowly. She started to open up the Christmas tree box and took out all the parts. While she was putting it up, Sabine came up to her and gently touched Hera on the shoulder.

"Can I help you with something Sabine?" Hera continued to adjust the branches on the Christmas tree as she waited for a response from Sabine.

"Well," Sabine began. "Are you okay?"

Hera raised an eyebrow and turned around. "Why do you ask that?"

"You've just seemed, oh I don't know, off." Sabine shrugged.

"I have?" Hera stopped fixing the tree for a moment.

Sabine sighed and folded her arms. "Well, you've seemed so tired lately, and sick. I just don't like seeing you this way."

Hera let out a very heavy sigh and turned to face Sabine. "I promise I'm okay Sabine. You're right...I have been off lately, but it's just a little something."

"Like a little cold?" Sabine asked tilting her head.

Hera shrugged and went back to fixing up the tree. Sabine took a step back unsure of how to respond to Hera.

"Well, I hope you feel better soon." Sabine walked away and went back to hanging the garland with Ezra.

After an hour of decorating, the three were already so tired. Kanan had come back from grocery shopping and fetching Starbucks for all of them. He began to put away the groceries and smiled at the all the decorations. "It's looking great in here. You might even say it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas."

Hera was the only one who laughed at that joke. She went to join Kanan in the kitchen. "Thanks for getting the drinks "

"You're very welcome," he said with a gentle smile.

"We wanted to wait until you were here to put the ornaments on the tree," Hera said. She took a sip of her drink and set it back down. "Maybe after dinner?"

"Sounds good to me." Kanan handed Sabine and Ezra their drinks and looked at all the decorations. He stopped and smiled at a small tabletop sized tree. "I remember when we got this. It was the first year Sabine spent Christmas with us."

Sabine rolled her eyes playfully. "I'm not that old now. You act like I'm all grown up.

Kanan shrugged and sat down next to Hera on the couch.

Sabine threw a Christmas pillow on the couch. "Thanks for adopting me anyways."

Kanan wasn't sure what that was all about, but he reached for the pillow and adjusted it. As soon as he did chopper jumped up on the couch and sat down on the pillow.

Hera smiled. "Awww, you found Chopper's  Christmas pillow."

Ezra looked over at Chopper who was already fast asleep. "Chopper has his own Christmas pillow?"

Hera nodded. "We got that one for him when he was a kitten. He was a rescue cat, so he was pretty scared at first. We wanted to make him feel comfortable."

Ezra had never related so much to a cat in his life. No wonder he had taken a liking to the grumpy little thing. He smiled and went to help Sabine hang up the lights on the fireplace.

-

After dinner was done everyone gathered around the tree and started to hang each ornament on the tree. Each one had a story, well at least to Kanan. He would hold each one up and tell them when they got it and where.

"Maybe we can take you to pick out an ornament," Kanan said to Ezra.

"Oh!" Hera blurted. "You're right. We haven't done that yet."

"Done what?" Ezra asked looking at them.

"Every year we all go out to pick out a new ornament. Each of us," Hera explained. She lingered on that last word.

Ezra stared at the ornament he just put on the tree. It was a cat ornament that resembled Chopper. "Hm, I think I would like that."

Kanan smiled at both Hera and Ezra. "Well, we should probably do that soon."

Ezra smiled in return and continued to put up more ornaments with the rest of the family. Once all the ornaments, ribbons, and all the other trimmings were up, it was a truly beautiful tree. The lights were shining brightly and provided a comforting warmth to the room.

Ezra had never seen such a beautiful tree before. In fact, he hadn't been around many Christmas trees before. If this was something to expect every year from this family, then he would be quite alright with that.

He was finally starting to feel like this was home.

-

Hera got back home from work in the early hours of the morning like always, and way exhausted like always. She plopped right on the couch and sighed heavily. She closed her eyes for a few moments but got up again to turn on the Christmas tree lights.

As soon as she did she heard Kanan coming down the stairs.

"I didn't wake you, did i?" Hera asked quietly.

Kanan shook his head and sat down next to her on the couch. "No, I was already awake."

Hera learned her head on Kanan's shoulder and stared at the Christmas tree. "It looks nice," she said staring at it.

"Yeah, it turned out great," Kanan replied. "I think Ezra and Sabine had fun too.  Speaking of Ezra, I think he's  finally starting to like here. He needed a stable home."

Hera nodded slowly and yawned. "He's a good kid."

"Yeah, he is. I'll admit, I was hesitant at first, but he's turned out to be alright."

Hera looked up at Kanan. "Why were you hesitant at first about adopting him?"

Kanan shrugged and thought for a moment. "I guess I was just scared that we wouldn't be good enough for another child, or I guess not ready. It took Sabine a while to adjust to us when we adopted her."

"So...you were just-"

"More scared of not being good enough," Kanan said shrugging again. "I don't really know how to put it."

"I think I understand what you're saying." Hera went quiet again and closed her eyes. "I'll be up in a second."

"Okay." Kanan kissed her and headed upstairs tiredly.

Hera still kept her eyes closed and felt Chopper curl up next to her. She started to pet him and listened to his relaxing purs. She slowly opened her eyes and looked down at the cat next to her. She sighed heavily.

"How am I going to tell him Chopper?" Hera said quietly to herself. She touched her stomach briefly. "How am I going to tell any of them? Especially when they're all content with. . .I don't know. . ."

Chopper looked up at her and tilted his head. He meowed softly and sat closer to her.

"Maybe I'm overthinking the whole thing," Hera mumbled.

She stared down at her nurse scrubs and slowly got up. What she needed right now was sleep, and maybe in the morning she would have a clearer mind on the whole situation.
