Chapter Nineteen: Their Feelings are Mine
Play Southern by Sleeping at Last
With the approach of the school festival, Principal Nezu allows (Y/N) and Eri to help class 1-A prepare.
"(Y/N)," A certain purple-haired student yells, chasing after the child, "Slow down! Your father wouldn't like it if I let you fall and hurt yourself."
The kid giggles, "I could just heal myself, obviously."
Shinso sighs in defeat, rushing forward and grabbing the child, turning them to face him, "But what if you can't?"
Time seems to halt as (Y/N) processes what he's said.
"What do you mean?"
"What if..one day, you're unable to use your powers? What if he takes your power or y-you get sick. What if—"
"Shinso." (Y/N) says, "You're being paranoid."
But the boy continues to ramble until the child gets fed up and smacks him over the head.
"Hush," They giggle, "That's very unlikely. Plus, I got you guys!"
Shinso pats their head, crouching down to look them in the eyes, "You're right. I guess I am being a worry-wart."
The two eventually make it into UA high. Since Shinso is in another class, this is where the two break off.
"You remember where class 1-A is set up, right?"
The little child nods enthusiastically, giving the boy a high-five before walking off. They walk past other classes, waving and smiling until they finally reach class 1-A. They're standing together in a circle talking. (Y/N) approaches slowly, listening in.
"Are you sure that Shinso still has them?" Midoryia asks, worriedly.
Togata laughs, similar to All Might, "They're more than capable of themselves, Midoryia!" He pats the green-haired boy's head, "I'm sure they'd be fine if they had no one watching over them."
"Where's Eri?" He replies.
Togata's face turns white, "O-One second." He rushes out of the theatre.
The class laughs together as (Y/N) finally reveals themselves. Ashido and Uraraka practically smother the child in hugs and tears.
"We were scared that you got lost!" They squeal, squeezing the poor kid.
(Y/N) eventually manages to wiggle out of the student's grasp, "I'm fine."
But that doesn't change their peers' minds and they hold them close for longer. Eventually, after letting go, class 1-A continues working on their choreography for the School Festival.
For a month and a few days, the class works hard. But for most of it, (Y/N) and Eri are only allowed to help class 1-A setup, nothing else. The two children don't understand why, but they don't retaliate either. Currently, the two are playing. Togata and Aizawa supervise as they run around, playing tag and giggling like there was no tomorrow. The world is getting brighter, warmer.
Better.
By the second week of the next month, it was time for the School Festival to begin. It begins with Class 1-B's play. (Y/N) and Eri find it slightly boring until they begin acting-out the fights. Then there are many other classes who've created something to show the school but the day whizzes by so quickly. Soon enough, after the Beauty Pagent, it's time for class 1-C's haunted house. (Y/N) clutches onto Midoryia's leg as they trudge through the surprisingly large attraction.
"Why are you so scared, (Y/N)?" The green-haired boy asks, holding them close, "You've fought villains by yourself before."
"This is different," They squeak, "I fought villains in the daylight. Sure, I can use my quirks to access their thoughts but I can't exactly see where they are. This—this is terrifying."
Midoryia smiles softly, holding their head. They continue through until Shinso pops out suddenly from a hatch in the ceiling. (Y/N) lets out a terrified screech and rushes behind Midoryia's legs. The purple-haired student freezes in place at the sight of (Y/N)'s petrified face. His heart practically shatters and he can't help but break character.
He falls out of the hatch, getting up to hug (Y/N). Except, they continue to hide behind Midoriya.
"I think it's just because (Y/N) can't see you." Midoryia states, "I'll calm them down for now, you should stay in character for the haunted house."
He picks up the small child and leaves the class' haunted house. Shinso looks on at the two as they disappear into the sunlight. His heart pounds in his ears as his eyes burn and sweat trickles down the side of his face. He attempts to follow them but as the sun slightly burns the right side of his face due to the afternoon heat, a classmate approaches.
"We still have more classes to scare. Go back to your position."
Reluctantly, Shinso nods and heads back inside the haunted house. For the next few scares, Shinso is more laid back. He's scared to hurt anyone else. After all classes have been through, there's a brief intermission to allow class 1-A to setup.
"Okay (Y/N), go find Aizawa," Midoryia says, "We need to go setup."
The child tilts their head, "Why can't I come?"
He chuckles, bending down to pat (Y/N)'s head, "It's a surprise."
They pout but is escorted out by Togata, eventually meeting up with Aizawa along the way. Shinso rushes around the entire School Festival looking for (Y/N). He ignores everyone, almost like he's trapped in his own world full of guilt. He keeps his eyes low, looking for the familiar (E/C)-eyed and (H/C)-haired kid, staring back up at him.
He finds them with Aizawa, eating an apple. Shinso slowly bends down, turning them towards himself. At first, (Y/N) freezes in his presence their eyes widen as they meet his purple ones. He flinches at their eyes. They're filled with sadness, confusion and a hint of fear. He finally speaks.
"I'm sorry for scaring you, (Y/N). Please, I promise that it was all in good fun. I didn't mean to."
Their eyes soften and the child giggles, patting his soft, purple hair, "It's okay, Shin. I just..I hate not being able to see my enemies."
Shinso smiles, genuinely, "I'm glad."
For the rest of the intermission, Aizawa, Shinso and (Y/N) explore the School Festival, having fun together.
But eventually, Class 1-A is ready.
"You want to see, right?" Shinso asks, "Get on my shoulders then, (Y/N)."
So they do. The entire room is dark but (Y/N) isn't scared. They feel safe with the purple-haired student.
They are safe.
"Hold on tight!"
(Y/N) glances over to see Togata with Eri on his back, their smile brightens. Eri is safe too.
Slowly, the red curtains open to reveal all of class 1-A with musical instruments and costumes. None of the students speak, they take a deep breath until Bakugo starts tapping his drums sticks together.
"Let's kill 'em with our sound!"
Suddenly, all at once, music begins blasting from the stage. (Y/N) nearly falls off of Shinso's shoulders. Not because the music was too loud, but because the sudden change in emotion has shocked them. They watch with admiration astheirfriends dance, sing and play their hearts out.
A smile displays itself on their small face. They feel warm again.
Happy.
As Jiro hits a high note, the notes resonate in (Y/N)'s mind, their heartbeats in sync with the song. They dance along flimsily with Midoryia and the other dancers, as well as Iida's robot.
Strength doesn't make a hero. True heroes..stand up for what they believe.
(Y/N)'s smile brightens as the lyrics repeats in their head. Their breath halts as Aoyama and Midoriya charge at each other and sparkling hero is thrown in the air, blasting his lasers in every direction. He's caught by Ojiro and the concert continues as normal. But (Y/N) notices as Midoryia disappears to the backstage.
Everyone's having so much fun! I can feel their emotions skyrocketing. They're amazing!
Jiro sings a high-note again and suddenly, the room brightens. Confetti, sparkles, ice and Aoyama's lasers, mixed with Uraraka making people float brings a larger smile to (Y/N)'s face and their heart.
Now it's my turn to be the one to make you smile.
Knowing how hard Midoryia and Togata have worked to make Eri smile again, (Y/N) looks over. The girl is excited, entranced by their performance, smiling. (Y/N) smiles too, their heart warms more than ever as the end guitar-riff causes (Y/N) to squeal with delight. They're so delighted, that they accidentally uses their light-emitting quirk. Class 1-A sees it from the stage. They smile at them as everyone begins to leave the auditorium and the class starts cleaning up.
"That was amazing!" (Y/N) rambles, running around the students excitedly, "Jiro hit the high notes so well and the visual effects were incredible. All the emotion you guys put into that.." They calm down, softly muttering, "I felt it."
"I'm glad." Jiro mutters.
She blushes until she looks down to see (Y/N) hugging her leg tightly.
"I want to be the hero in your song!" The child exclaims, "I want to be the hero that makes everyone smile!"
Jiro pats the girl's head, "I'm betting on it."
