(Lost Motivation) Answer to Jaysen27's Question
Have you ever had a story that you lost the inspiration and motivation to write it?
What did you do--scrap it or save it for later? -Jaysen27
I've never completely given up on a story before. The reason for it being that for a while I set a rule for myself not to move onto another project until I finished the rough draft of what I was working on.
However I've been breaking that rule lately. And now I have way too much to write. So I highly recommend against it.
When I started Expiration Date I had already been working on a novel, and I started to neglect it. I didn't give up on it, because I knew I had to finish it since it was a sequel. But I ended up not do anything with it for a couple months. I had got to a point where I had just no motivation to write it.
I couldn't scrap it, but I also couldn't set it aside for much longer because I needed to finish it. So to gain the motivation I needed I skipped to a later part in the story-- something I am strongly against. Since I don't use an outline, I don't like skipping because I'm scared I'm going to miss important character development.
But I had to do it, and it worked.
So if you ever find yourself stuck, what you have to remember is that you're not writing for the market, you're writing the novel you want to read.
If you need to add a character type you like to write do it. It really helped me. And my novel now has a new element that I love.
So I hope that answers your question, and I hope you find the motivation for your stories.
