3 | Excursion?

"I'm so tired," Irayo pouted. The school had closed and everyone was excited to go home.

"Me too," Zaizai nodded, munching on plantain chips.

Out of nowhere, their principal strolled in like he was the President of the country and not the principal of a private school in Lagos, Nigeria. The students weren't pleased to see him, most probably because they knew he wanted to make an announcement or perhaps punish them for one of their many offenses. Either way, he would delay them from leaving.

"Silence! Everyone, settle down," Principal Ita commanded and they obeyed that very second.

He started, "Ahem! I've already discussed this with your parents on the school's group chat so let me just inform you. In two weeks, the school is going on a field trip to Ibababi for an educational adventure. This excursion aims to expose you to new and meaningful experiences."

Their eyes widened with shock, excursion? That word excursion sounded foreign to their ears as they hadn't ever gone on one before. Though they had been praying and wishing for them to eventually go on one, they were still stunned that it was actually going to happen and that to in their final year of secondary school.

"Ibabi? Never heard of it. Sir, where is Ibabi?" Divine asked, feeling dazed. She found this to be suspicious. In truth, most of them did too.

"Shut up!! Did I say it's time to ask questions?" the principal shouted and hissed slightly.

"Sorry sir," she immediately apologized, not wanting to get on his bad side.

He continued, "You must come for this school trip because it covers 45% of your grades."

"Ah!" They exclaimed vigorously.

"Silence! Now,  you know the importance of this trip. By the way, you should be happy that this excursion guarantees 45% of your grades for each student who comes for the trip. Some of you are so feather-headed that you can't even score up to 30% in your previous exams," he mocked.

"Woah!" The students exclaimed again.

"Am I lying or do you want me to start reminding you of low grades? I guess not. I pity you, WAEC is soon approaching and I'm wondering how y'all will get admissions. And one more thing, this excursion is strictly for your class alone," he concluded.

"Okay, sir," they nodded but the Principal could clearly see the thousands of questions written all over their faces.

He sighed. "Now, you can ask your questions."

"Sir, where is Ibababi?"Divine asked first.

"Hmm, how long are we going to stay there?" Suzy questioned.

"Sir, are we paying for the trip?" Kicky inquired.

"Sir, what are we going to wear to the place?"Ayo sounded excited.

"Sir, what is the trip about?" Zaizai was curious.

More students wanted to ask questions but he dismissed them. These kangaroos ask too many questions, he thought to himself. Principal Ita loved to address his students as kangaroos. The students didn't mind though as they found it amusing.

He said firmly,  "Yes, I've told your parents that you will pay some twenty thousand naira and you will spend two to three days over there. You are not expected to come in your school uniform, please wear regular clothes. As I said earlier, this is solely for educational purposes. The school management will provide food and drinks but feel free to bring snacks. As for your other questions, seek answers from the group chat. Is that understood?"

They nodded in agreement. He cleared his throat and exited the class making sure to show off his big butts.

The minute he was out, the class burst into loud echoes. "Wahala be like going for a school trip," Israel stood up, swinging his bag from the back of his chair.

"This is the first time we're going on a school trip and it will last for three days," Suzy pointed out the obvious, tugging on her hair.

"I can't believe that they're charging 20K," Ayo shook her head in disbelief.

"Why? You should know by now that this school likes money," Great wasn't shocked. The students who were excited to go home earlier were not lost in their discussion. But Israel couldn't care less about it as he waved his goodbyes and flew out of the class.

"But it will make sense if we all go"," Kicky said not hiding her excitement.

"Yes, it would," Zaizai clasped her hands.

Irayo scowled as she spoke, "If only my Mom would agree."

"45% of our grades are a lot so I'm sure that she'll let you come," Zaizai assured Irayo, munching on her last set of plantain chips.

"Hmm, don't you know my mummy?"

"Irayo, you must come so we can make memorias," Gbolex insisted. Irayo just eyed him.

"You know I love you," Gbolex smiled at her.

"No, I don't," Irayo smirked. Though Gbolex had confessed his massive crush to Irayo almost four years ago, she acted oblivious to his feelings. She didn't like him as he wasn't her type but Gbolex was persistent.

"Awnn, couple goals," Minah cheered for them. Irayo coughed and gave Minah a look that could make her disappear.

Everyone laughed loudly.

"Zaizai, please don't forget my chinchin," Ese reminded Zaizai. He loved, actually, everyone loved Zaizai's chinchin but Ese adored it the most. Chinchin is a popular crunchy snack in Nigeria, they were more like sweet chips made of flour, butter, milk, eggs, and the like but Zaizai's chinchin tasted uniquely sweet.

Zaizai not being in the mood just hissed at him.

"Please hiss again," Tall Daniel chuckled but Zaizai just eyed him.

"Zaizai's hiss is just special," Irayo said between laughs. Even Zaizai didn't know what was amusing about her hiss, perhaps it was the way her lips curved.

"Zaizai, make Ese's chinchin extra sweet cause you know, the dude is heartbroken," Irayo suggested, smirking at Ese.

"Of course," Zaizai agreed.

They let out sardonic laughs, earning scowls from Ese.
