17 | It's My Time To Shine
ZAIZAI'S POV
"Has Ibabi taken your ability to count or what? Can't you see that the five of us are left," Irayo answered sharply.
That's right. Five students were left. They didn't know where the other eleven students vanished but they hoped that they won't share their unfortunate fate.
"I never thought that it would reach this point," Zaizai said, pacing back and forth.
"So technically, everyone's gone," Gbolex sounded hopeless.
He stretched his hands forward and continued, "Ese, Minah, Irayo, Zaizai, and I are the only ones that are left."
"It was meant to be," Irayo chuckled.
"We're still not safe though," Ese indicated, doubling GBOLEX'S anxiety.
Zaizai smirked and nodded. "Yeah, We're not."
Seeing as they had no choice, they started walking in the Eastward direction. The day would soon be over and they could only hope they at least get through it. They walked in silence and Gbolex missed the noise from their friends. However, the silence faded away and was replaced by music.
"Can you hear that?" Minah asked.
"Yeah, but it's not really clear," Zaizai replied.
As they walked further, the music got louder and it was pretty clear that people were shouting and dancing. Gbolex spotted an ancient building. "I think the noise is coming from there," he said, pointing to the building.
"Let's go there," Ese suggested but Zaizai shook her head. "No, it may be another trap."
Irayo hissed. "Zaizai, you know Ese's dumb."
"Irayo, I'll take my revenge once we're outta here."
"That's if you make it in one piece," Zaizai giggled.
Minah defended Ese. "Y'all should leave him alone."
"Awwnn, couple goals," Irayo and Zaizai sang, earning killer looks from Ese and Minah.
"That building looks weird," Ese changed the topic. They stared at the weird building again and that was when they saw Gbolex in front of the gate.
Irayo stamped her feet on the ground and yelled. "Ode (stupid), don't be dumb. Do you wanna die?"
"Awwnnn, she loves him," Minah teased Irayo.
"Yep, she does," Ese also teased.
"Shut up!" Irayo scowled but they continued with the teasing. Zaizai laughed and cherished these funny moments.
Gbolex waved his hand so they just decided to go to the building. When they got there, they could hear Nigerian Afro-pop songs playing. The ancient building was painted in the ugliest color of grey. It had a narrow red gate and it was very tall.
"This place is legit. It's really safe. Come on, let's go in," Gbolex was excited. He opened the gate and entered. The others got in and their eyes widened at the sight of a huge crowd. They really thought they were alone in cursed Ibababi. The people were very much engrossed in dancing and feeling the vibes of Asake.
The last five teenagers also joined them in their celebration even though they didn't know what they were celebrating and they didn't care to know. Most of them were dressed in Native attire and the decor was poor in taste.
"Every other day, I organize!!!" They sang along to Organize by Asake.
"Yay! ZAIZAI'S dancing," Irayo shouted, her body in motion. Everyone knew that Zaizai didn't like to dance in public but she was carried away by the enjoyment. It had been long since they had fun. Since they heard music.
But every good thing has to end at some point. Inexplicably, the people stopped dancing and singing. They became static and silent. The invisible DJ had stopped the music, too.
"Hello!" Gbolex screamed but they didn't respond.
"Okay, I suspect that some Ibababi sh*t is about to take place so let's get outta here," Ese rightly said but Gbolex refused, "No, it's my time to shine!" Gbolex walked to the stage and took the microphone from its stand.
"Is he kidding me?" Minah eyed him.
Zaizai screeched. "STOP!"
"Manager, just chill. I want to perform for everyone. They'll like my song so much that they'll start dancing again," Gbolex sounded confident.
"Your village people have finally caught you," Irayo clasped her hands.
"It'll shock you," Gbolex rolled his eyes. He cleared his throat and greeted, "Good day folks. What's up beauties? My name is....."
Minah interrupted him, "Won't you also greet the handsome guys?"
"Maybe there are no handsome men here," Zaizai stated, glancing at the static folks.
"Men can also be beautiful too?" Irayo chuckled.
"Stop, it ain't funny," Gbolex shouted and then touched his imaginary beards.
He continued, "I'm Gbolex musically known as Batuli Humble and I'm here to sing one of my songs titled, JAM."
The second, Gbolex sang the first line, the stage began to fade little by little but he didn't notice anything.
"Jam, jam, see our future in your eyes," he sang intensely but sadly, he couldn't continue cause he and the stage completely disappeared into thin air.
"Gbolex!"They called out. He was gone like the rest of them.
"He died doing what he loves the most, singing," Ese cried.
Why is he crying? Zaizai was confused.
"Ese, stop crying," Zaizai tapped his shoulders.
But why wouldn't he cry unless of course.......could it really be?
The four of them looked at one another. Minah faced Ese. "Ese, stop crying. You know that....."
She was cut off by Ese. "I was just being emotional, just to add extra effects."
They laughed wickedly, "Muhahahaha!!"
