Broken Rules

⚠️IMPORTANT⚠️

I'm going camping this weekend and idk if there will be any service, so if I go missing for two days then sizysjsjuzus I'm sorry-–

Also I'm sorry if this chapter doesn't really make sense but it doesn't make much sense to me and I'm the author lmao-–

The three were frozen, their feet literally glued to the ground as they stared at Nightmare, shaking.

Cross cast Killer and Dream a sideways glance, swallowing harshly. "N-Nighty I--"

"Don't call me that." He hissed, pushing himself to his feet.

"I-I swear this isn't what this looks like!"

"Really?" He tilted his head to the side a bit, his mouth twisting into a scowl. "Because right now it looks like you've betrayed me and proceeded to free my prisoners. And then you've decided to lead them in the complete wrong direction of where they're hoping to go. Why's that, hm?"

Dream froze, slowly looking at Cross. "You took us the wrong way?"

Killer had to restrain himself, growling. "You shit! You lied to us!"

The small mortal ignored him, looking right at Nightmare, a small smile forming on his face. "You remember what I said last night, don't you?"

Nightmare stared back at him, his previously angered expression slowly fading. "...Yes?"

"Then you know why I said it?" He asked, slowly taking a few tentative steps forwards and towards him. "Why I left my locket. You know how important it is to me, I'd never just leave it."

Meanwhile, Dream was physically having to hold Killer back, whispering frantically to him to calm down. "Killer stop it! Our best bet is to try run while they're distracted."

Killer hissed loudly but glanced at the double doors they came through, noticing they were still slightly ajar. Gripping onto Dream's hand tighter, he suddenly made a dash for it, the two of them scrambling towards the doorway.

Not a second later Cross whipped around, something forming in his hand before he flung it at the two.

A giant, burning red knife sunk into the wall right in front of them, sending the two screeching to a halt with a choked scream. They dropped to the floor, scrambling back away from the knife as quick as possible.

"What the hell?!" Killer yelled, lurching to his feet and pointing at the smol. "How'd you do that?!"

Cross ignored Killer and smirked, now being right by Nightmare's side. He stared up at him, taking in the fact that it looked like the God wanted to stab him for what he'd done. And then he gripped onto the front of Nightmare's jacket, pulling him down to his height before kissing him.

Dream and Killer blinked rapidly, watching as Nightmare's expression of anger went to one of shock, and finally one of confusion. The tall God pulled back from the smol, gripping onto his shoulders tightly. "I--..."

He looked up at the God, whispering a few words of apology and slipping one of his slender hands to intertwine with Nightmare's gently. "I know something..."

The god looked down at him, his stunned expression slowly changing as a sly smirk spreading across his face and he gently hooked the heart locket back round his neck. "I knew you had to be planning something... And what do you know?"

The smaller took a sideways glance at the two before leaning up on his toes and whispering something in Nightmare's non-existent ear.

He stared at Dream Killer as Cross pulled back, a large grin spreading across his face. "Is that so~?"

Cross nodded softly. "I think..."

"What the hell is he on about?" Killer hissed, pulling Dream a little closer to himself subconsciously.

"I-I don't know..." He stuttered, watching them anxiously. "But it cant be good..."

Killer growled, glaring daggers at Cross. "So was all that shit you said about having no feelings for Nightmare a lie?! About him crumbling in your hands and you taking advantage of that?!"

Cross snorted, flashing them a quick grin. "Duh. Anyone can see I've fallen for him, couldn't leave him if I tried. And the crumbling thing wasn't a lie, but it was more him that took advantage of me over anything else. I only did all this because I had a suspicion about you two. Ever since I saw you in the arena."

They watched as Nightmare hummed, pressing a quick kiss against Cross' hand before focusing his attention on them.

"So, baby brother doesn't approve of me finally finding someone that makes me happy? He'd rather have me rot in my own self hatred and darkness for all eternity?" He asked, his voice dripping with anger once more as his single eye stared right at Dream.

"No its not like that! N-Nightmare you know is against our laws! You could be cast out if you don't realise this!" Dream yelled, seeming desperate now.

"Realise?!" Nightmare hissed, grabbing onto Cross' arm and pulling him behind himself protectively. "You don't think I've fucking realised that I'm breaking the number one rule?!"

"Brother this has to stop!" Dream cried. "You don't understand what you've got yourself into!"

Nightmare glared coldly down at the two of them, his eye narrowing. "No Brother. It's you that doesn't realise what you've gotten yourself into."

The smaller blinked, an expression of confusion clouding over his face.

The dark God sneered, pointing agitatedly at the two of them. "At least I have the knowledge to know when I'm fucking in love! You two are holding each other's hands while telling me what I'm doing wrong!"

Killer and Dream immediately looked down at their hands only to see that they were intertwined. They'd done so when they'd first walked into the throne room, and they'd forgotten to let go.

Dream's face flushed in embarrassment, his hand immediately pulling away from Killer's forcefully. His eyes were full of shame.

"Rant onto me about these pathetic rules all you want, brother. But all you're doing is scripting your own future. The two of you are in love, it's so painfully obvious. How can you just stand here and tell me what I'm doing wrong when you're doing the exact same thing?!" Nightmare yelled, his tentacles raised and pointing threateningly at them.

"Nightmare calm down..." Cross muttered, gripping onto his arm tightly and glaring hatefully at Killer and Dream.

The God sneered, looking down at them. "Even Cross noticed. He took one look at the way you act around each other and figured it out. You two are just too thickskulled to realise you're in love."

Dream was frozen, everything crashing into place. He'd known in his mind that he was feeling something towards the mortal. If he had his soul, it would have been beating like crazy every time Killer gripped onto his hand or smirked at him. It made sense now, why he'd felt light headed when Killer hugged him, why he'd flushed darkly when Cross implied they were together, why he was always so terrified when Killer got hurt.

He loved him...

Beside him Killer was stiff, his eyes fixated on the small sunshine God before him. His soul was pounding, thumping in his ribcage so roughly that he was sure the others could hear it. He inhaled sharply, thinking of how his soul had always seemed to swell when he held Dream's hand, how it practically burst that time they'd hugged, only to deflate and sting when he'd ruined the moment. He'd convinced himself that he was just worried about him, in an everyday-nice-person-way. He thought it was just natural. But no.

He was indeed in love with Dream.

Nightmare and Cross watched the two intently, noticing the shocked and guilty looks on their faces. Oh yes, they'd realised.

"Do you understand now brother?" Nightmare called, wrapping an arm around Cross' waist. "You've fallen into the same trap as me. A mortals touch, it's like poison to us. A drug. Addicting, isn't it?"

Dream was trembling, his hands shaking horribly as he clenched them into fists. "I-I-- I-I cant- Th-This can't be real-- Y-You'RE LYING!" He yelled, looking up at his brother desperately.

Nightmare laughed, shaking his head. "Oh brother, I pity you. Emotions have always been so clear for you that when one out of place one comes along, you crumble to dust."

"N-No!" He cried, clutching his skull in his hands and shaking his head. "THIS ISN'T RIGHT!"

Killer was frozen, only able to watch as the smaller fell to his knees, seeming to break down into a panic attack. "D-Dream--"

The God flinched as Killer rested a hand on his shoulder, recoiling as if he'd slapped him. "D-Don't touch me! STAY AWAY!"

Killer looked at him in shock, seeing the tears streaming down his face. "Dream I- It's okay."

"NO IT ISN'T!" He screamed, still clutching his skull as he stumbled backwards, his back colliding roughly with the wall. "I-I can'tIcan'tIcan't!" He choked, glaring up at him.

"I-I HATE YOU! J-JUST GO DIE AND LEAVE ME ALONE!" He cried before lurching around and running, his sobs echoing across the throne room as he disappeared around the double doors.

Nightmare watched the scene unfold, slightly shocked himself as he looked down at Cross. "What do you say we make a quick exit?"

The smaller nodded, gripping onto him tightly and looking at Killer. The skeleton looked heartbroken, his eyes wide and empty as he stared at the spot where Dream had been stood moments before.

And then they disappeared.
