Chapter Five: A Poem

I sighed, my mind in a daydream of romance, Grace by my side and safely navigating me through the crowded halls to our Lockers.
"Oh Joy" she sighed, shaking her head,
"As blissfully happy as you are you really ought to get your head out of the clouds."
One of her eyebrows delicately raised as she added,
"Twice you almost barrelled into other people. Honestly, if it weren't for me you'd be bruised all over by now, and then what would your lover say?"

At that remark I fiercely shook my head and retorted
"My Christopher is a kind, caring and honourable man. How dare you even apply that he only cares for my looks". Grace recoiled a pace or so, a shocked expression on her face, then it smoothed out and she gave a hearty laugh
"Love may have gentled you and allowed your heart to soften, but it seems it has only strengthened your protective spirit, oh she whom is fierce as a wolf". I smiled at that observation and gently titled my head.
"Indeed" I laughed in reply.

I turned to my locker and opened it. Starting as I saw a note that must have been slipped in through the vents. In cursive handwriting on the envelope were the words "Miss Stockil". My heart gave a little jump, for I recognised the writing to be Christopher's. Opening the letter, I smiled as I saw the title neatly written at the top of the page, "A Poem for You". Quickly glancing around to ensure that no one was watching, I read the poem.

"Oh Joy, my dear lady
For you my heart is crazy
No one can hold a torch to you
Every action of yours is true
Your heart and actions are pure
I will love you until deaths door
You are ever so kind and caring
Always so smiling and sharing
Your beauty cannot be put into words
But my heart it ever so stirs
My heart is full of love
For surely you are a gift from above
Whenever we together dance
My heart does a little prance
Whenever we twirl and spin
Love and passion stirs within
Roses are red
And violets are blue
Joy, my dearest, how much I love you"

Upon finishing the poem, I felt my heart flutter and my cheeks grow hot as a comforting warmth enveloped me. As I was quietly sighing in bliss, I felt peering eyes upon my back.

Looking up to see who the eyes belonged to, I saw Christopher standing there, watching me. I met his handsome green eyes and gave him a smile. As I searched his warm eyes, I heard an echo of the last line of his poem
"Joy, my dearest, how much I love you"

My smile faltered as I glanced at the other people walking in the hallway. Anguish teared at my heart, how desperately I wanted to run to Christopher and embrace him. But I couldn't, for we must keep our secret.
