The Council of Elrond
"Strangers from distant lands, friends of old. You have been summoned to answer the threat of Mordor. Middle-Earth stands on the brink of destruction. You will unite or you will fall. Each race is bound to this fate, this one doom," Lord Elrond said. Legolas hung on his every word. "Bring forth the ring Frodo." A Hobbit, scurried forward, placing a ring in the center of a table. Legolas felt his eyes drawn to the ring, as if it were begging for him to take it. But Legolas ignored this urge, after sharing emotions with a dragon, it is easier to ignore urges.
"So it is true," The man of Gondor, Boromir, said, he too was staring at the ring. In a dream, I saw the Eastern sky grow dark, but in the West pale and lingered. Voices crying and doom was near at hand." The man shifted towards the ring. "Isildur's bane is found... Isildur's bane...." He inched closer and closer to table that held a tiny ring, reaching for it. Elrond stood from his chair with a shout while Gandalf began speaking.
"Boromir!" Elrond yelled, but his words almost went unheard under the speech of Gandalf.
The sky grew dark, thunder rumbled, uneasy looks were thrown, Legolas clutched his head, the words affecting him. Gandalf stood from his chair still speaking the foul words.
Little one! Forn cried. Whom is hurting you so I know who to rip from limb to limb.
Ignore it Forn, I am not hurt in the matter that needs your protection. Go back to sleep, it will make you happier if it happens again.
I woke because of you, I cannot sleep on command.
"Never before has any voice utter the words of that tongue here in Imladris," Elrond stated sitting down shakily once it stopped. Gandalf walked forward and Legolas opened his eyes, the pain gone with the words.
"I do not ask you pardon, Master Elrond. For the Black Speech of Mordor is heard in every corner of the West. The Ring is altogether evil." Gandalf shot a glare at everyone before returning to his seat.
"It is a gift," Boromir said. "A gift to the foes of Mordor. Why not use this Ring? Long has my father, the steward of Gondor, kept the forces of Mordor at bay." He was standing now, pacing in front of the council. He was passionate, Legolas could give that to him. "By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe," He was still going, pacing and waving his finger at some of the council. "Give Gondor the weapon of the enemy! Let us use it against him!"
"You cannot wield it," Aragorn said causing Boromir to turn. "None of us can, the One Ring answers to Sauron alone, it has no other master."
"And what would a ranger know of this matter?" Boromir turned to the Ranger, his eyes cold and hard.
"This is no mere Ranger," Legolas said, standing from his seat and approaching Boromir so the man was now facing him. "He is Aragorn, son of Arathorn." Although Legolas spoke softly, he tried to make his voice hold power, so Boromir would listen to him as he spoke. "You owe him your allegiance." Boromir turned to Aragorn.
"Aragorn," He said, breathless. Aragorn had no expression, just met Boromir's eyes. "This is Isildur's heir?"
"And heir to the throne of Gondor."
"Havo dad, Legolas. " Legolas remained standing for a moment before he turned his back on Boromir and sat down.
"Gondor has no king," Boromir sneered at Legolas before turning back to Aragorn. "Gondor needs no king," He stated as he walked back to his seat. He sat and the council was silent for a moment.
"Aragorn is right," Gandalf spoke up. "We cannot use it."
"You have only one choice," Elrond said. "The Ring must be destroyed."
"Then what are we waiting for?" A dwarf asked standing from his seat. The dwarf grabbed his axe and swung it at the Ring. When the axe made contact with the Ring however, it shattered into pieces showering the floor with shards of clattering metal.
"The Ring cannot be destroyed, Gimli son of Gloin, by any craft that we here possess. The Ring was made in the fires of Mount Doom, only there can it be unmade. "It must be taken deep into Mordor and cast back into the fiery chasm from whence it came, one of you must do this." The council was silent. Legolas pressed his lips together, thought flashing through his head.
"One does not simply walk into Mordor. It's Black Gates are guarded by more than just Orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep." Legolas turned his face expressionless as he watched the man of Gondor speak. "And the Great Eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland, riddled with fire, and ash and dust, the very air you breathe is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this." Boromir was shaking his head. "It is folly." Legolas launched himself from his chair, finally deciding he needed to say something.
"Have you heard nothing Lord Elrond just said? The Ring must be destroyed!"
"And I suppose you think you're the one to do it!" Legolas turned his gaze to Gimli, who had spoken to him.
"And if we fail? What then?" Boromir asked getting up from his seat. "What happens when Sauron takes back what is his?" Gimli pushed himself up from his seat.
"I will be dead before I see the Ring in the hands of an Elf!" Legolas tried to remain calm as angry as the dwarf was making him. "Never trust an Elf!" And the council exploded, everyone yelling.
"I will take the Ring to Mordor," Frodo said confidence dripping from his voice. "Though," He said quieter, the confidence only taking him so far. "I do not know the way."
"I will help you bear this burden, Frodo Baggins." Gandalf walked towards him and patted his shoulder gently in a reassuring type of way. "As long as it is yours to bear."
"By my life, or death," Aragorn said pushing himself up from his chair and approaching the Hobbit. "I can protect you, I will. You have my sword." He kneeled in front of Frodo before standing up again and taking his place beside Gandalf.
"And you have my bow." Legolas said, walking towards the Hobbit, a smile on his face.
"And you have my axe," Gimli said, his face showing just how proud he was of the Hobbit. He walked forward and stood next to Legolas, who stiffened slightly, but made an effort to relax.
"You carry the fates of us all little one," Boromir said stepping forward and making his way towards our grouping. "If this is indeed the will of the council, then Gondor will see it done."
"Hey!" Another Hobbit ran on to the stoned platform, standing next to Frodo and taking his hand. "Mr. Frodo's not going anywhere without me."
"No indeed, it is hardly possible to separate you two, even though one of you was invited to a secret council and the other was not." Elrond said and the Hobbit looked down, blushing.
"Wait! We're coming too!" A voice called and two more Hobbit ran forward to stand next to Frodo. Elrond was clearly not happy, but he let them pass without saying anything. "You'll have to send us home tied up in a sack to stop us!"
"Besides, you need people of intelligence in this sort of mission... quest... thing," The fourth Hobbit, Pippin Legolas soon learned, said.
"Well that rules you out, Pip." The third Hobbit,Merry, said.
"Nine companions." Elrond said staring at us, eyes misty. "So be it." His eyes cleared and he was staring at us more intently now. "You shall be the Fellowship of the Ring."
"Right." Said "Pip". "Where are we going?" Merry gave him another look of horror while most of the Fellowship laughed and shook their heads.
Tell my father my choice, Forn.
You forget I cannot speak to your father without you as a translator. No he will have to find out from someone other than I. But do not expect me to go back to Mirkwood like a tame pet. I will follow you, even if it happens to be the death of me.
Do not make this difficult for me. I cannot let you come with me.
I cannot let you go alone, little one. You have no choice in the matter. I promise to eat anyone who tells me that I cannot.
Legolas chucked. Your humour disgusts me.
That is because you are an elf.
Fair enough.
"Legolas," Elrond said. "If I may speak with you." Legolas nodded ignoring the look he got from Aragorn, followed Elrond. Lord Elrond lead him out to where they both had a view of the mountains.
"I am afraid you going means we have unknowingly added a tenth member to the Fellowship," Elrond stated. Legolas griminanced.
"I couldn't stop her," He admitted. Elrond nodded, not seeming quite bothered by the fact of the tenth member.
"Perhaps that is what the Fellowship needs, dragon power."
I would like to speak to this elvish lord.
"Lord Elrond, Forn would like to speak with you. I will simply translate everything she wishes to say to you." Elrond nodded at Legolas' words and gestured for him to go ahead.
"She would like to thank you for letting her rest in the mountains, or letting her continue to rest there after you found out she was there and... Forn, I cannot say that." Legolas put his head down and felt the blush creeping onto his cheeks.
"Say what?" Elrond asked chuckling slightly.
"And she would like you to realize that she will tear you from limb to limb if anything happens to me on this quest you sent us on. She would also like to mention that she would like to reveal herself to my companions, she feels that it is only right that she meets them."
"Well Forn," Elrond said. "There is no need to thank me for letting you rest in the mountains, I would gladly let you continue to stay there anytime you or Legolas decide to visit Rivendell, although I am afraid I cannot make your rooms closer together. There is simply no room for a dragon in Rivendell. As for your threat, I cannot promise that Legolas will be perfectly safe, however you must keep in mind I did not ask him to join the Fellowship of the Ring, that was his choice and his choice alone. Thirdly, yes, I do agree with the fact the the members of the Fellowship of the Ring should be aware of your presence, if you are to be joining them, then they should know it... Does she wish to say anything else?" Legolas nodded slowly.
"She says to ready the Fellowship, because she is on her way." Elrond laughed and walked briskly to where the Fellowship was still gathered.
