12 - Would You Risk it All?
"Depends what you mean sweetie", she smoothly lilted, her accent leaking through into her words. Swiftly, she brought her hand upwards into his arm and caught the gun as he threw it upwards. Clicking the barrel again, this time she put it in the same position to his head and a half grin crept onto her face. "Now it's déjà vu".
"You've been learning, but you should always know I bring at least two weapons into battle". He reached for his belt, still looking down the silvery barrel of the gun and pulled out a thin sword. Half-staring at it glinting under the single lightbulb, he put it to the side of her throat. "Now, dear, which one of us will blink first". She felt the sharp bite of the blade on her windpipe, but kept her stance.
"How's it going down there?" she heard Hyde call from the surface. "Nat?"
In the mirrored barrel of the gun she could see him dangling from the surface, head just looking inside the warehouse. His green eyes glistened, almost luminous, and a smirk appeared when he saw Dance.
"Hello, old friend", he growled softly. "Fancy seeing you here". Still upside down, he dropped down and spun, so he landed on his feet like a cat. Dance whistled, not releasing his sword's grip on Natalia's throat. From the darkness Silas and two other goons with similar eyepatches across their left eyes walked out. They clicked the barrels of their gun in perfect unison, like they had been practising that moment for years, and shot at Hyde. They just slid past his shoulders.
"For a goon, you're a really bad shot, by the way", Hyde quipped and Dance held his hand up for them to stop. Even if they did hit, he would just heal from them, so it was a useless effort.
"Go back to the surface and I won't put this sword through this little girl's neck", Dance threatened, but Hyde didn't move a muscle.
"Who you calling 'little'?" she yelled at him, before sinking her stiletto heel into his boot. "I'm 5" 11, thanks".
"That's my girl", Hyde whispered to himself, quite proud that his protégée had started to take up his mantle.
"Now who's doing cliché lines?" he exclaimed and he watched Dance grip his foot as a shot of pain ran through it. Natalia simply snatched the sword from his hand and pointed both the gun and blade at him.
"Checkmate", she murmured and put both weapons in her belt.
"So", Hyde started, pulling out the Hyde sword from its case with a majestic flourish. "Where's the chamber?"
Natalia gestured over to a wall panel with three rectangular squares etched onto it.
"State of the art technology", she said.
"Really?" Hyde replied, quite amazed by it.
"No. It's the 1930s. It takes a fingerprint of each Hyde sibling and sends it to Agent Stevenson up in MIO".
"And he is?"
"A friend of your father. Their friendship was the link between Tenebrae and MIO. It kept the two organisations from causing trouble. But now Louis's somewhere in the Middle East in hiding, but Stevenson still keeps his promise of looking after his family".
"But we need Olalla, and Lottie".
"For Olalla, I got this". Gently she picked out a piece of sellotape from her belt. On it was a spiralling fingerprint. "And for Lottie, I am a perfect copy of her, right down to the fingerprints".
"Well, you came prepared".
"Don't I always". There was an almighty crash behind them, and Hyde spun around, snarling like a leopard. The door to the basement had been pulled apart and someone had obviously left in a hurry.
"I don't think I prepared for that", Natalia muttered to herself and went over to inspect the hole in the wall. The door had been made of steel, but the hinges a stronger material still. However it was like they had been pulled straight from the frame and bent so the door hung off it. "Has Dance still got the Incubus?"
"Yes", came the reply, but it wasn't Hyde. "Funny, how some people get so distracted by the tiniest of things". The lights had been put out, so it was pitch black, but if she squinted she could see the red glow of the Hyde Sword.
"Tell me dear", said the voice again and Dance came out from the darkness into the light of the newly revealed stairwell. "How much does Hyde mean to you?"
He had Hyde in a death grip around his neck and had a gun barrel full of black monocane ready to fire into his bloodstream. Hyde was roaring like a caged animal and fighting against his grip, but, since the Incubus was in his veins, Dance had the upper hand.
"Let me into the chamber, release Lottie and give her back her power, and I might think about not turning this monster to dust". Dance may have lied, killed and cheated, but one thing he didn't do was bluff. "It's your choice, Fedora, would you risk it all for a man you barely know?"
