Chapter 12: A monster inside me
(Normal pov)
"OPEN THE GATES!!!"
A lone Saxon solider roared out while on horseback, the soldiers manning the gates quickly opened the massive gates leading into England itself, the citizens cleared out of the way as the Saxon soldier rode toward the castle like a madman.
King Edward and his personal body guards were at the steps of the palace where they awaited the lone Saxon rider, the body guards rushed over toward the exhausted soldier, Edward made his way over to his faithful soldier and saw the man gulping in mouthfuls of air.
"M-my... k-king..."
Edward placed a hand on the exhausted soldiers chest and spoke. "Catch your breath my good man, then speak." The soldier nodded at Edward's instructions, after regaining his breathing, the soldier spoke out. "The general... h-he's dead. As is the rest of my unit. They were slaughtered by those vile heathens and their... winged devils." Edward raised an eyebrow in confusion. "Winged devils?" He asked, the soldier nodded and clarified. "D-dragons." The king looked at the soldier with a look of surprise and disbelief.
"Soldier, dragons are creatures of myth. Fairy tales or mothers told us." Edward said, the soldier however looked into the kings eyes and shook his head furiously. "With respect my king, I've seen these dragons with my own two eyes, they are very real. The leader of these heathens had a message for you." The soldier coughed lightly before saying what that... boy said to him hours earlier.
"He said... send your strongest armies. The Red Maw is ready for war."
(Astrid's pov)
I was frustrated.
Well, that was an understatement.
Truth be told... I'm scared. The great Fearless Astrid Hofferson is scared. And what is it you ask that I'm scared of? Its taking over Berk.
I had trained all my life to be a warrior; to be merely a servant to our chief, not become the replacement heir. Taking Hiccup's place...? It didn't sit well with me at all. I didn't deserve this honor, in fact, none us do.
We all wronged Hiccup, and despite my mission to make my wrongs right, I felt like I haven't done anything to make the guilt leave me. I've also been having... disturbing nightmares, these dreams showed me and the other people of Berk torturing Hiccup. I did everything humanly possible to intervene and stop my dream self and the other Hooligans from hurting Hiccup, but to no avail.
And I feel hopeless.
I blink away a few tears that are threatening to spill, I grip my hands so tightly, that I hear my knuckles crack, I look down at my hands to see myself gripping my trusty battle axe with an iron like grip. I then turn my axe to the base and I gasp as I see three initials.
H.H.H.
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock.
H-he made me my axe?
No. Thats not possible! My father told me that Gobber made it for me, I received this axe at my thirteenth birthday, the day I finally got to train with a live weapon.
(Flashback- Two years ago)
I made my way over toward Gobbers smithy, the summer air was most welcome, it seems Berk can never escape the cold, and it felt great to warm up before winter slammed back into us with a vengeance.
Today was my thirteenth birthday, and after years of fighting hand to hand, as well as sparring with my father with wooden weapons, I was finally going to pick up my live battle axe. I smiled at the sight of Gobbers smithy, the old blacksmith was whistling away while sharpening a sword, I knocked on the counter and Gobber looked up toward me and gave me a warm smile.
"Ah Astrid! Morning! And happy birthday to you!"
I smiled and responded back. "Thanks Gobber, I'm just here to pick up my first real battle axe." I say with excitement, already imagining all the dragons and enemies of Berk I'd kill with that axe. Gobber finished sharpening the axe and nodded. "You got it lass! One fresh battle axe, coming right up!" The old blacksmith turned to his left, looking toward the back of the shop and shouted out. "OI!! HICCUP!!! Get out here will ya!! Get Astrid her battle axe!!" I saw Hiccup approach with my axe in hand, and he nearly tripped on his own feet.
Odin have mercy.
I swear, if that twig breaks my axe, I'll snap his arms in half.
"Astrid! Hey! Hi Astrid!! Hi Astrid! Hi Astrid! Uh h-happy birthday!!" He says, I merely scoff lightly and roll my eyes, he looks saddened by my actions and then present my axe. "Here you are! One battle axe for the birthday girl!" He says, I snatch the axe out of his hands, I then twirl it in my hands, balance it out and get used to its weight.
Perfectly made.
I then look up at Hiccup, who looks like he's daydreaming, I curl lips up at him, I couldn't believe I used to be friends with this kid, I then turn back to Gobber. "I appreciate it Gobber, this axe is going to claim the lives of many dragons and other enemies of Berk." I say with passion filled enthusiasm, Gobber merely smiles and nods in acknowledgment. "Of that I have no doubt young Hofferson. Enjoy the rest of your day!!" I nod in appreciation and don't say anything to Hiccup.
I suddenly feel... guilty for some reason. But I shake off that feeling and head straight to the woods to begin my training.
(Present day)
I drop my axe and back away from it like its on fire, my lips tremble and my breathing escalates tremendously. Hiccup made me my axe and I... I don't thank him, acknowledge him as a living being, and abandoned him since my Uncle Finn was murdered by the Flightmare.
I can't hold back the tears and begin to sob bitterly, I fall to my knees as well and continue sobbing. What have I done?
"O-Odin, if you or... any of the gods can hear me... please... forgive me for abandoning Hiccup. He deserved far better treatment than he did. And now? I feel like I don't deserve that axe, my new title as heir of Berk, or my life." I weep out, I sniffle and look at my axe, the reflection shows my tear stained face.
We Vikings don't cry easily, but this is a necessary circumstance. I feel the full weight of Hiccup's death on my shoulders. Everyone here seems to have forgotten about Hiccup, except Gobber, Gothi, Fishlegs, and myself.
"I-I'm sorry Hiccup." I whimper out. "I'm sorry. Please forgive me." I look out into the vast forests and remember fully well that Hiccup loved to come out here, and I can see why, nature couldn't reject him, nature didn't torture or hurt him.
We did.
I did.
I slowly get up and pick up my axe, and wipe away my tears and and purse my lips tightly, the urge to do honor Hiccup increases ten fold, I need the guilt to disappear. I head back to village and know exactly what I have to do.
I'm going to make Hiccup proud.
(Hiccup's pov)
The moonlight shown down over me as I looked out toward the horizon, even though the past few days of training, flying at light speeds with Toothless and ploughing Heather have been pleasurable and well needed... I can't help but think about Astrid.
Despite her ripping my heart out of my chest, ignoring me, turning her back on me for fame... I still wonder how she's fairing these days.
"No doubt she's celebrated my death." I murmur in anger, I think of every time I tried saying hello to her, to try and be there for her after her Uncle Finn died, and just be friendly in general. And what did she do? She rejected me. And it felt as if she drove a knife straight through my heart.
The memories of her abandoning me, rejecting me, and calling me useless cause my blood to boil, my draconic side takes over, but this time, something else happens. My pupils turn into thin slits and I scream in agony as I feel my shoulder blades transform into demonic like wings, I could feel my spine sticking out of my back, I squeezed my eyes shut and roared in pure cranial pain.
Heather, Toothless and it seems everyone woke up at my roars of agony and when everyone gathered, they all were shocked at the... transformation that I was undergoing.
::Hiccup!! What in the name of all that is sacred is happening to you?!::
Toothless asked in a sacred tone, I couldn't answer because my transformation continued, I looked at my hands and saw them become paws, with razor sharp claws, my forearms beefed up, my skin turned black scales started to form on my hands, and forearms, my feet too transformed into hind legs and sharp talons stuck up, I could feel my bones snap, crack and realigning themselves, causing unfathomable pain to spread throughout every corner of my body.
"ARGH!!!!"
I scream as my bones continue to snap and break themselves, my ears being to sharpen, almost like an elves and my green iris's glow as I let out a mighty roar, my voice echoing across the horizon and out toward the seas. After I let out my roar, I fall to my knees, and pant heavily, my body was sleeked in sweat, my heart threatening to burst out of my chest and my fear skyrocketing.
Heather slowly approached me and spoke. "Hiccup...? What. Was. That?!" She asked with fear in her voice, I slowly look up at her and I shake my head, I didn't even know what was wrong with me, at first I thought that Toothless's saliva just gave me draconic abilities. But know? I'm... a hybrid between a man and a Night Fury. So look back up at Heather and breathe out.
"A... a monster inside me."
My lieutenants order everyone to move along, and to return to their posts, they all nodded and murmur in both awe and fear at what they had just witnessed. Toothless made his way over to me and and nuzzled into my side.
::It seems you have a gene of the Lycanwing Hiccup. I thought those preposterous myths weren't real, unfortunate that they are. Instead of being bitten, perhaps... my saliva caused this to happen to you::
Toothless warbled out softly, I was cradling my head in my hands, I felt hands on my shoulders, I looked up to see Heather give me a sad smile, I then feel tears stream down my face. "Will this... be permanent?" I ask her, Heather looks at Toothless who nods, I sigh shakily and close my eyes, Heather however cups my chin and pulls me into a passionate kiss, when she breaks apart, she shakes her head at me.
"You don't have to deal with this alone Hiccup. You have Toothless and you have me. I love you." Heather whispered, I look into her eyes, she smiles at me and nods. "I love you Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III." She repeats louder, I can tell she's not lying to me, her eyes tell me the truth, I embrace her and she returns my hug, Toothless too nuzzles into my side, I wrap one of my arms around his neck.
"Thank you. Both of you." I then kiss Heather and look into her eyes and smile at her. "I love you too." She laughed lightly and we just hold each other, this... draconic side of me is something I need to learn how to control and master. And for the first time in my life? I'm glad that I'm not alone.
A/N: So I've been busy at my new job, and I appreciate your patience, I'll update when I can, but until the next update, enjoy!
