5 - Heart to Heart
Hyde had gone missing for an hour after Keres's 'visit'. Bella had searched the whole house, but eventually found him hiding in one of the bedrooms. It was one of the larger guest rooms, with royal blue themed wallpaper and carpets, and an ornate, mahogany writing desk. It was this said desk that Hyde was now putting his feet up on, and leaning back in a chair.
"Didn't think you were the one to sulk", she remarked from the doorway. He didn't turn to see her, just continued to stare at the wall.
"I'm not. Just...thinking".
"Dangerous for someone like you".
"What's that? Someone who's so spoilt their own sister dealt with the devil to be on the same level?".
"So that's what this is about", she lulled, sitting on the bed behind him and putting her arms around him. "Don't blame yourself".
"I know, I-"
"But don't blame Olalla either. She was, what, seven years old. And she was left with the most dangerous monsters known to the world. She didn't know what to do, say anything to a kid and they'll do it if you say it's right".
"So what are you saying? Can't blame Jekyll, can't blame Olalla. Who do I blame for this mess then? Myself?"
"Please stop talking about yourself in the third person. You and Jekyll are the same person. I hate to say this, but the crazy, dramatic vampire queen is right. You blame Jekyll for everything, and he blames you for everything. When are you going to accept that you are one of the same?"
"I know. It's just, he's everything I'm not. He's kind, he's merciful, and then there's just me, beating people up and getting shot".
"Nobody's perfect, love".
"You are..." Bella raised an eyebrow at the rather smooth flirt from Hyde, who had now turned around to talk to her.
"Talk to Olalla. You've heard the self proclaimed 'Queen of the Night Children's' side of the story, what about you hear your sister's side".
"What would I do without you Bella?"
"I'm sure you'd be okay".
"No, no, really I wouldn't. You've been... amazing, and I don't know who I'd be if you weren't here".
"You're really putting the charm on this evening, aren't you? Sure one of those vampires didn't bite you or anything?" Bella chuckled, starting to walk out the doorway. "And Hyde". He spun around on his chair to see her.
"Yeah".
"I don't know where I'd be without you either". She then wandered off, leaving Hyde with his thoughts again. Sighing, he left the room again and immediately ran into Olalla by the staircase.
"Hi", she said slightly awkwardly. "I hoped you would come out and I... Look we need to talk".
"Then, please, enlighten me".
"Keres twists the truth, that's how she's so high in Tenebrae-"
"And of course you'd know everything about that wouldn't you".
"...as I was saying. They told me you had been taken by MIO, and that the only way I could get you back was to join Tenebrae. 'Follow in your father's footsteps' and all that rubbish".
"And the vampire, megalomanic tale?"
"I took Keres's deal because she promised me the power to destroy MIO and get you back. But halfway through it I decided against it, that's why I'm only a halfling".
"Why's she so desperate to break my family apart then?"
"When a vampire turns someone, they transfer all their power into a person, then retract it, so it leaves a parasitic 'mark' on them. This then grows into full vampire powers, but if the change was from a queen they can control them from the mark. I broke the connection so when she transferred her abilities to me, they stayed. I then got rid of them, leaving a mark on me, but she was left with nothing. She's obviously a bit...cross".
"You could say so. She's threatening to break someone's neck if we say no".
"Do you trust me Hyde?" she asked in a hasty tone. "Do you really, really trust me?"
"I'm working on it".
"I need you to trust me Rob. Because that's what Keres does, she isolates people and then breaks them in every way she can".
"You have my trust, Olalla", he murmured, wandering down the stairs, and tracing a finger down the wallpaper border. "But make sure you keep it that way". Swiftly he ducked into the lab and found a vial of green monocane in the shelving unit in the doorway. Reluctantly he glugged it down and let Jekyll take the reins for a while. Family stuff... Just too much hard work. Lottie was testing something with the chemical bottles down in the main room of the laboratory. He ran down the stairs, making her jump and drop the glass she was holding. It fell for a moment, then stayed, held in animation by her powers. Focussing on it, she then picked it out of the air and placed it back on the table.
"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you", he started, going over whatever the Hell just happened with the glass. "You been...experimenting?"
"Not a lot else around here", she lilted and put three bottles back over the other side of the room. "You know, except from perhaps being responsible for everyone we love's deaths if we don't hand over one of the most powerful weapons of the demon world".
"We'll find a way around it, I'm sure".
"But will we though. From what I've read on this Keres, she used to be really powerful. Well until someone depowered her".
"Has Olalla set you up to this?"
"Oh my God-" she started, sighing with frustration. "She's your sister, Robert. She's the one person you're supposed to trust. I just wish there was a way I could actually prove she's innocent, because, really, she is. I've seen her whole life, and it is flipping tragic. Tenebrae have engineered her to be a complete outcast, and here she is trying to get someone to trust her". A thought popped into her head suddenly and she grabbed the Jezequel book. She flicked through the pages and read through one of the passages, but Robert couldn't catch what it was about.
"Come here", she said bluntly, and Robert shuffled slightly towards her. "For goodness sake it's not like I'm going to bite. That's the other sister".
"What you planning on doing then?" he asked.
"How recently has Hyde... hidden?"
"About thirty seconds". She thought for a moment, and then shrugged to herself. Turning to face him, she concentrated on his eyes, and then promptly head-butted him. He stepped back, and then everything Lottie knew about Olalla flooded into his head. And Lottie was right. Not just about Olalla's innocence, but also her lamentable childhood. She was Tenebrae's pet, driven by monocane and her hunt for her family.
"What was that?"
"Simple telepathic transmission. I could've done it more gently, but you're a brave boy, you can take it".
"I need to find Olalla", he muttered, taking off back up the stairs.
"Robert", she exclaimed, stopping him on the second flight. "We're all incomplete. You can't accept your Hyde, and she can't accept her Jekyll. Remember that. You're opposite ends of the spectrum".
"I will... Thank you". Lottie smiled at probably one of the first people appreciating something she did with her powers.
"Olalla! Olalla", he called, seeing her still standing on top of the bedroom landing. "I know you weren't lying".
"Then you also know Keres is Hell in high heels, and shouldn't be crossed".
"Yes, but..." he said, and his tone turned very quiet. "They experimented on you, didn't they?"
"Of course they did. That's what Tenebrae does. They keep power through terror and making your dreams come true while they ruin your life".
"I don't know what to say".
"Neither do I".
"That's new".
"You can talk. Oh wait, you don't know what to say so you can't. Big brother".
"There's my sister. Come on, let's head home. I think give it a few more hours and Renata will be adopting us".
