3 - Warning Shot
Robert got out of the car, adjusting his hat, his eyebrows furrowed into a confused frown. Everyone else did the same, all filing out, and Olalla found great joy in throwing Hills off her lap. She could hear a car engine running somewhere in the wood, but she just passed it off as her ears tricking her. Robert went up to the window and tried to look through the glaring light. Suddenly the light went out and he heard whispering inside. Getting rather annoyed, he knocked on the door, and waited for a reply. Nothing.
Then, unexpectedly, the door swung open and Teken ran out wielding a kitchen knife. Without looking where he was going, he sunk the blade into Robert's knee, at which he yelled horribly. Teken's eyes widened in terror as he saw Hyde emerge for the first time, and he reached for the handle of the knife. However Hyde got there first and pulled it out with a blood-curdling crunch. He didn't seem fazed by it though. "Missing something", he asked in a mocking tone, swinging the blade in between his fingers. A tiny smile crept onto Bella's face to see Hyde again.
"Bella", he lulled, lifting her hand up and planting a kiss onto it. "Glad you could come".
"Enough of the niceties, Hyde. Let's go kill some demons".
"What demons?" Teken interrupted quietly, knowing he was treading a fine line. "There hasn't been anyone here".
"Yes", Hyde scoffed. "About that. I don't remember leaving you here".
"I'm Renata's fiancé. Sorry I haven't been introduced properly. Teken, the Harbinger".
"Teken?" Lottie asked from the car. "Teken, is it actually you?"
"Lottie... You're alive".
"I see you've moved on, darling. To me".
"What can I say", he started, going towards her. "I have a type".
"Right then Mister", Hyde growled, shoving him back to the door. "Your 'type' right now doesn't include my sister, so shove off". Teken winked at Lottie, and she blushed slightly, then let them all into the house.
It had the same décor as before; Renata obviously hadn't bothered to redecorate. Though that wasn't to say it was horrible in any way, just the dowdy, floral wallpaper and tiled floors were beginning to show their age. Making sure no one was looking, Hills silently lifted a sword from its wall display and slid it into her belt.
"Should've told me you were coming", a voice said from the door in front of them. Renata walked out of it, dressed in a twilight blue, linen skater dress, and beige court shoes. Her hair had grown down past her shoulders and dyed blonde. On her finger was a silver ring encrusted with a ruby, emerald and diamond. "Would have made some tea".
"No, we're not staying long. Just a... cautionary visit", Hyde quipped, tracing his finger along the edge of an arrow on the wall.
"Cautionary? Nothing's been here".
"We thought Tenebrae might try and attack here to get the Hyde Sword".
"Well, they're taking their time then. We've been here, what is it, five months?"
"Why wait though?" Olalla piped up, puzzled at the question the conversation had brought up. "Why not just attack?"
"Maybe they need someone else, something else", Hyde muttered, and then the pieces started falling into place, sending a shiver of regret down his spine. He looked at Bella standing behind him. She was wearing the Jekyll Ring. "Or maybe they just wanted to kill two birds with one stone". Sooner than he could finish his sentence, a bullet shot through the window and hit the furthest wall, leaving a deep scar. Well, at least it was an excuse to redecorate.
"Warning shot", Hills murmured, and Hyde turned to look at her. "My father used to be in the army". Ravi nervously looked out the cracked window and could see who fired it. At the end of a short barrelled carbine was Silas, surrounded by similarly armed men. Two of them were roughly holding a man with a sack over his head, and four Vetala slunk around behind them, casting devilish shadows in the dancing sunlight. There was a soft-topped vehicle parked just by Robert, well, Hyde's car. He could hear some thing, some things, screaming inside it. A though popped into Ravi's head and he concentrated on the vehicle, and what was inside it. If he had the Reaper's abilities, he might as use them.
After a short while, he had one of their sights in his mind. They were scared, but not of what was to come. They were scared of what was above. The sunlight. They were afraid of the sunlight that beamed through the fabric topped Jeep.
"Is that the best you can do?" Hyde shouted to them.
"Surprisingly", Silas grunted. "No". He whistled to one of the Vetala and, with a clawed finger, cut the cord off the back of the vehicle and released the creatures inside. They shrieked under the sunlight and immediately ran for the shadows.
"Vampires", Olalla gasped.
"You'll be at home then", Hills teased, attempting a buddy punch on Olalla's shoulder, only to be met by an irate snarl.
"They won't hurt us though", Olalla commented. "They don't want to fight; they just want the shadows".
"No, no, you're wrong", Ravi whispered, studying studying the creatures outside. "These are hungry. The deprivation of blood will kill them first, and then the UV light. They're more likely to kill to survive". Silas grinned to see the child had figured out everything, and whistled again. The vampires turned away from the wood, and extended their claws to be bloody spines. Ravi didn't have time to warn anyone, they ran too fast, like lightning. They broke through the windows and roared, dragging their nails on the tiles. Hills reached for the sword in her belt and pointed it at the beast in front of her.
"Stay back", she shouted, and swung the blade at it. It didn't wince at all. Hyde couldn't take it all in at once, but one he did conclude one thing, as a vampire leaped at him, claws outstretched. They were in danger...
