2 - I Believe
The road was long and so bumpy, Lottie was sure they were going to lose Ravi out the window.
"Where the Hell are we going?" Olalla asked from the front. "We've been driving for ages".
"We've been in the car five minutes", Robert retorted. "And besides, I didn't know one of them moved. Though it's understandable under the circumstances".
"Who are we picking up?" The old fashioned buildings passed them by and in the distance there was a tall, burgundy building with a metal canopy hanging over the pavement. Olalla opened her mouth to ask him again as he wasn't answering, but then she sighed. "Oh, I see. Brother dearest is bringing his new girlfriend with him to see the sights".
"Like I said, friends".
"You think it's a good idea to bring a non-Hyde to a place where there could be Tenebrae lurking about?"
"I think it is", Lottie interrupted. "She's exactly what this needs. A little bit of humanity". They pulled up, quite abruptly, sending Olalla flying into the dash. Possibly deliberately. Out of the jade coloured doors came Bella, in a long, trench coat with a shotgun resting in her painted fingertips.
"Any room for me?" she asked through the wound down window.
"Always", Robert responded, and Bella's scarlet lips curled into a smile as she opened the rear door. Ravi moved over into the middle and Bella sat on the end. He pulled off the curb and drove all the way through the city, passing all sorts of businesses and buildings. Namely Utterson and Son's Lawyers, which sat, sad and lonely, in between a few residential blocks and a quiet public house. Everyone in the car looked rather mournfully onto it, but there was a small lightening of joy as they saw what was outside it. There were magnificent bouquets of tulips, lilies and sunflowers, all vivid colours, almost glowing under the sun. Robert slowed the car down, just to take in their beauty, and he was sure that, behind the condensation in the window, he could see his friend waving at him. Was it? Yes he was sure, Hyde wouldn't go that far to trick him. There he was in his favourite tweed suit and stripy tie, with a huge beam tattooed across his face was Max. Robert was sure it was his eyes playing tricks on him, but a part of him hoped it was real, that his friend was there. Max lifted a finger to the condensation and, in his usual, curly handwriting, wrote 'I believe. Thank you, my friend' in the window. It brought both a tear and smile to Robert's face, to think that he now believed in everything they had told him about the supernatural. He had accepted his family for who they were.
"No. Thank you", he whispered, and started to accelerate again.
"What do you think Robert?" Olalla asked, and it knocked Robert back to reality.
"Of what?"
"Who's the biggest psychopath out of all the people in this car?"
"I-I... don't know", he stuttered, trying to get to grips the strangeness of the conversation. "Lottie, perhaps?"
"Excuse me!" she enquired, quite offended. "Sociopath with homicidal preferences, thank you very much". Everyone in the back of the car then looked at Olalla.
"Oh, I see. Pick on the questioner".
"Well, a psychopath is someone who doesn't have a conscience, who does things without empathy".
"Okay, maybe I am then", she huffed, and agreed just to end the conversation, that was getting quite out of hand. They had come to a lush forest at the edge of the city. It had seldom variation of trees, all tall, leafy oaks standing superior to everything below it, and in the distance Lottie could see a cottage. It was an old fashioned grey stone, with a fawny coloured thatched roof. Just beside it was a large open pasture with a canopy set up on the one side of it. A long winding road among the trees led to it and by the time they had followed it all, a short-ish woman in a dark brown, bucket hat and stubby boots was standing outside the door. Robert drove up beside her and she knocked on the window.
"Room at the inn?" she lilted.
"Course", he answered, then backtracked his answer when he realised he only had a five seater, and there was now six of them. "Actually..."
"Don't worry", she said, opening Olalla's door and sitting on her lap. "I'm sure this lovely lady won't mind". Olalla's face turned into a deep scowl, as the shorter woman put all her weight on her knees.
"Hills, I'm guessing", she muttered.
"That's me". Hills looked around the car, at every person in turn. She took a double take at Lottie, realising she hadn't seen her before. "Who's this one?" she asked Robert, as he pulled off her drive.
"This is Lottie. My sister".
"Another one?" she laughed. "I thought you had finished looking when you found this one". She tapped Olalla's head, which only made her scowl more. The blonde looked up at her hand on her head, then batted it off.
"Does she have to be here?" she growled, baring her elongated canines.
"Ooh, vampire".
"I'm not a freaking vampire for the fifteenth time".
"Why the fangs then?"
"Have you even seen a vampire before?" They were getting increasingly louder and more aggressive at each other, and Robert was finding it hard to concentrate on the road.
"I can't say I can, dear, but I know the basic attributes of one". Olalla reached behind into the back seat and grabbed the Jezequel book off Ravi. She flipped the pages to the vampire file, and accidentally flicked him in the face with the page. With a huff she passed the book to Hills, and she stared at the illustrated page. On it was a devious looking thing, dark purple skin and large, red eyes. The fangs went past their bottom lip and were stained with blood.
"Okay, I believe you", she murmured, and turned the book onto its side. Olalla breathed a sigh of relief. "But I can kind of see the resemblance". An angered growl reverberated throughout the car, and Hills silently gulped.
"Brother", Olalla roared. "Permission to throw her through the window?"
"Denied", he answered plainly, and leaned on the dash through the window. "What the Hell is happening in there?" Hills only then realised they had stopped, in front of the Jezequel house, and there was a strange, orange light glowing through one of the windows...
