Midnight/ Early morning (1:30 am)
I could not fall asleep because I was still contemplating what my parents suggested about going to India. How will I deal with the heat and the new environment? I barely know any Hindi and how do I manage everything ? Sighs escaped my mouth and I realized that this may be a good thing to talk to my brother about as he always had good advice.
I walked to my brother's room and tried to see if it was locked. It wasn't. I went in and my brother was still working away on his laptop. He looked up and said, "Jas? What are you doing up so late? Everything alright ?" He got up and held my face by the cheeks. I looked up at him and hugged him. He hugged me back without questioning anything. I unraveled myself from his arms after a few moments and said, "I am in a small crisis. Mom and Dad suggested that I go to India for one semester to do my archaeology course. I don't know what to do. How will I be able to cope up ? It will be the first time I go there."
My brother looked into my eyes and told me to sit down with him on his couch. He pondered for awhile and said, "Look Jas, I know you really well and I know that wherever you go, you will do great. You're a star. You shine wherever you may be. Sure, there may be a few problems here and there but that is what this new journey will be about. You will face new challenges but you will also find happiness along the way. At this time of the year in India, its monsoon and you will face the monsoon magic. It is truly a beautiful and majestic place."
I wanted to say how do you know but my brother answered that question right away. "I know you are wondering how I know this but remember that summer I went to India when I was 22? It was the summer I discovered myself. Everything I knew up until then, it wasn't real like India was. It taught me the ways of life and true happiness. It is where I found the bountiful fruits of success. I don't know how to put it all into words to tell you but I promise you that you won't regret it." He smiled at me and waited for me to say something.
I said, "Thanks Akki, I really needed that. I was originally scared but the way you passionately spoke about India made me realize that there isn't anything to be afraid of. I will tell Mom to book a ticket soon."
I embraced him briefly and he said, "Remember Jas, if you have any problem, give me a call and I'll be on the next plane to India." I smiled and mumbled into his shoulder, "I love you". He replied that he loved me too and than I left his room to go sleep.
In the Morning
I woke up from my sleep and sprung out of my bed. I called Jen and Jay on a three way and told them that I was going to go to India after exams finished. They were thrilled to hear that I was willing to go. I showered quickly and went downstairs to eat breakfast with my family.
I said hello to my parents, Taan and Akki as I passed by them to sit. As I was eating french toast, my mom asked me what I had decided about India. I coughed a little and said, " I have decided to go to India but if I do not like it, I will come back." My parents smiled at each other and mentioned that they will book the ticket right away.
It seems like I will be heading off on this journey very soon...
