Unlikely Allies
The sun had barely begun to set, casting a soft, golden light over the city. Momo Ayase sat on the rooftop of her apartment building, her legs dangling over the edge. The cool wind tugged at her hair, but she didn't mind. It was one of those rare moments when she could find a little peace amid the chaos of her life, a moment to breathe without thinking about the supernatural horrors she kept getting caught up in.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket, pulling her out of her thoughts. She pulled it out, expecting a message from her best friend or perhaps one of the more bizarre creatures she'd encountered lately. Instead, it was from Okarun.
Okarun: "Hey, you up for a walk? I think I owe you one after... everything that happened last night. :)"
Momo smirked, the memory of the previous night flooding her mind. It had been another strange, dangerous encounter, full of monsters, curses, and... well, Okarun. His unexpected courage, mixed with his ridiculous sense of humor, had gotten them out of a tight spot once again.
She quickly typed a response.
Momo: "You owe me a lot more than that, Okarun. But a walk sounds nice."
A few seconds later, Okarun's reply came through.
Okarun: "Meet you in 10. And I promise—no monsters tonight."
Momo chuckled to herself as she put her phone away. She wasn't sure she believed him, but there was a part of her that appreciated his optimism. Okarun had a way of making the impossible feel a little more manageable, even when the world around them was unraveling.
Ten minutes later, she was standing by the entrance of her building, waiting for him. The night was calm, and the city felt peaceful for once, the kind of night that made it easy to forget about curses, aliens, and the constant threat of supernatural madness.
Then, she heard footsteps behind her. She turned, and there he was—Okarun, wearing that familiar grin, his eyes bright with his usual energy.
"Ready for the walk?" he asked, already stepping closer to her.
Momo raised an eyebrow. "I thought you were going to stick to your promise and keep the monsters away."
"Yeah, well..." Okarun scratched his head sheepishly. "It's hard to predict the future, y'know? But hey, let's enjoy the peace while it lasts."
They began walking down the street, the evening air cool but not too chilly. They didn't talk much at first, just enjoying the quiet and the simple rhythm of walking side by side. Momo had to admit, it felt nice to be out of the madness for once.
"So, uh," Okarun broke the silence. "How've you been? Really?"
Momo glanced at him, surprised by the question. He usually didn't ask such things—usually, he was too busy trying to keep up with the madness. But there was something in his tone, something a little softer than usual.
"I'm fine," Momo replied, a little too quickly. She adjusted her jacket as they walked. "Just... tired. A lot of things have happened recently, you know?"
Okarun nodded, his gaze thoughtful. "Yeah, I get it. It's been pretty intense. I mean, we almost died last week, right?"
Momo shot him a look. "You can't just say things like that so casually!"
He laughed, a goofy grin spreading across his face. "I know, I know. But seriously, I don't think I would've made it without you. You're always there to pull me out of the fire."
Momo felt her heart skip a beat. It wasn't often that Okarun acknowledged her efforts so seriously. Usually, he'd make a joke or just brush things off. But this time, his words felt different. She smiled softly, her gaze lowering to the ground.
"I'm just... glad I could help," she said quietly. "You know, you're not so bad yourself."
Okarun's expression softened, and for a moment, they walked in silence again. The peace wasn't uncomfortable; it felt natural, like the two of them had found a little bubble of calm in the midst of the chaos.
Eventually, they came to a stop in front of a small park. The moonlight was shining brightly, casting long shadows on the empty benches and winding pathways. It was quiet here, too, almost like the world had forgotten to keep spinning for a moment.
"You know," Momo said, breaking the silence again. "I used to come here to think... before all of this craziness started."
Okarun looked at her, his expression sincere. "You still can, you know. We can both come here when things get too wild."
Momo chuckled. "I don't think you're the type who sits and thinks. You're more the 'charge into battle and hope for the best' kind of guy especially when your In your little...demon form."
Okarun puffed out his chest dramatically. " I'll slow down for you once in a while."
Momo smiled, grateful for the rare moments of levity Okarun brought to her life. It wasn't easy, living in a world so full of danger and unpredictability, but with him by her side, even the darkest moments seemed a little brighter.
They both sat down on a nearby bench, side by side. The city stretched out before them, lights twinkling in the distance. For once, it felt like they could just be... normal.
"Thanks for this," Momo said after a long pause.
Okarun looked over at her, his eyes soft. "For what?"
"For being here. For making things... less crazy. Even if it's just for tonight."
There was a brief silence between them, but this time, it wasn't awkward. It was comfortable. Okarun's grin returned
