"C'mon, Josh. I promise I won't let some killer clown or possessed woman drag you away from me." Your claim gave Joshua a little reassurance, so here he was, about to enter the 'gates of hell' as he called it.
As soon as they walked in the haunted house, they were met by a dim, eerie hallway with one flickering lamp hanging at the very end of the hallway. You and Joshua were following behind Dara, who was clutching onto Larry's shoulders as if her life depended on it.
"This isn't too bad, right bub?" You inquired curiously as you peeked through the connecting rooms filled with zombies and random cannibals.
"Yeah." He responded monotonously. You peered up at him only to see him with his head down squeezing his eyes shut. He continued to grasp your hand and trudge into the next part of the haunted house with no problem.
"Joshua, your eyes are closed." Joshua hummed in response and refused to open his eyelids once again. You rolled your eyes and slapped Josh's chest, finally getting him to open his eyes and witness what was happening around him.
You were about three quarters of the way into the attraction when things started getting creepier. The moment you entered another corridor, the lights turned off completely without a warning. You gripped onto Joshua's torso tightly as the rest of the group started to voice their fears.
"We're all going to die." Dara shouted as she clung to Larry, or at least whoever she thought was Larry, it was too dark in the room to make out who was who. Everyone tried following each other's voices, but were taken aback when three clowns popped up out of nowhere screaming bloody murder as bright white lights shined on their figures.
One of the horrifying clowns stood merely inches away from you. As soon as Joshua heard the clown's shriek, he ripped himself from your hold and ran for his life. He even accidentally knocked over Frankie on his way out of the corridor.
If he was a cartoon, there was no doubt in your mind that he would've left a trail of smoke in his tracks.
As the clowns retreated back to wherever they came from, you instinctively held onto Dara as you entered another room, where there was blood splattered all along the walls and a demon child sitting in the corner of the room torturing a stuffed animal. It was crazy how realistically deceased the child appeared. You carefully tried to move past her, but the girl jumped up suddenly and latched onto your foot, making you scream in terror.
"You bitch!"
You eventually shook her off with the help of your friends, but it was safe to say that you were scarred after that entire experience. By the time you got out of there, most of the haunted house was a blur. The only thing you could really remember was being shaken to your core.. and Joshua completely abandoning you.
He was waiting right at the exit for you, his smile fading when he noticed your angered expression. "Joshua Taylor Bassett, you left me?!"
Matt and Joe snickered as Joshua attempted to explain himself. Your hands were still shaking in fear, but you were trying to mask it.
"That's messed up—you literally left your girlfriend for dead." Matt cut in, receiving another menacing glare from Joshua.
"Well, she isn't dead, is she?" Joshua received many—well deserved—slaps to the back of the head from Larry and Sofia for that comment. You could tell that they were also shaken up by what they witnessed in the haunted house, but you refused to let your fear show, especially since you were the one so persistent on going inside in the first place.
You all bought apple cider and kettle corn from one of the stands near the entrance before heading to the petting zoo before it closed. Joshua was in the middle of feeding a baby goat when he began to watch you with adoration in his eyes as you spoke to his friends that had now become your friends.
While he was watching you, a much older goat approached you from behind and brushed up against your leg, making you jump higher than a scared cat. He furrowed his eyebrows at your dramatic reaction but shrugged it off and went to sanitize his hands instead of questioning it further.
Later in the night, you were all finished with your snacks and decided to do the corn maze. You started at the same point, but as you all trudged further into the maze, you slowly started to separate from your friends. Joshua was quick to make a maze runner joke that nearly made you cry. Poor Newt.
It had gotten to the point where everyone went their separate ways and you were stranded somewhere in the maze alone. As you turned left and right over and over again, a wave of anxiety rushed through you.
"Joshua?" You called out weakly. It felt like you had been going in circles stuck in this maze for hours and you were beginning to feel claustrophobic. You received no response the first couple of times you shouted for him. Just as you were about to have a break down, you heard Joshua's voice in the distance calling out for you.
"Y/N? Angel, where are you?"
You yelled out a response as you forced yourself to keep moving in the direction of his voice. Your throat was burning now, it was still scratchy from all the screaming in the haunted house.
When Joshua found you a couple minutes later, your cheeks were stained with tears and you had strands of your matted pink wig stuck to your forehead from sweating so much. Joshua sent you a pitiful look and wrapped his arms around you comfortingly. You immediately sighed as he squeezed you, relieved to be in his arms again.
"I'm sorry I left you alone in the haunted house. I should've been there to protect you." Joshua mumbled apologetically into your shoulder. You hugged him tighter and forgave him. You stayed like that for a solid minute before finding your way out of the maze together with a newfound enthusiasm.
All of your friends were waiting patiently for you both when you made it to the exit. You had to admit, you were a little embarrassed to be the last one to make it out of the maze, but Joshua squeezed your hand reassuringly making you feel less ashamed.
"Hey, guys, I think we're gonna head out. We're just gonna order an uber, you guys can stay here if you want." Joshua informed them and after receiving a few approving nods and saying your goodbyes, you were on your way to Joshua's apartment.
Once you arrived, Joshua carried your exhausted figure up to the bathroom and helped you remove your makeup and take off your wig.
"Want me to brush your teeth for you?" He inquired considerately. You weren't sure if it was because of your scare earlier or the fact that you were practically half asleep, but his innocent eyes and kind offer had you this close to crying.
You hummed while shaking your head and carefully walked over to pick out one of his hoodies from his closet. "Want ice cream." You spoke lazily. Joshua chuckled at your sleepy state but agreed anyway and made his way downstairs to get it for you.
When he returned to his room, he found you laying in your spot on his bed with your eyes closed. You had changed out of your Lavagirl costume and were now sporting his hoodie and a pair of sweats that you kept at his apartment specifically for moments like these.
He gently nudged you and helped you elevate yourself before passing you your pint of ice cream. You smiled and pressed a small kiss to the corner of his mouth as a thank you. To distract you from his flushed cheeks, he turned the TV on and played the Halloween episode of Friends.
He rushed into the bathroom to change into his pajamas, deciding on showering tomorrow morning and just brushing his hair out of the spikes for now. After giving himself a satisfied glance over in the mirror, he stepped out and joined you in bed.
He grabbed his pint of ice cream from his bedside table and scooted closer to you. He wasn't really paying attention to the screen, he was more focused on your endearing laugh whenever Chandler or Joey made a joke or the way your face would scrunch up in delight when you had another spoonful of ice cream.
Joshua considered this to be his best Halloween yet. No, not everything went according to plan and the night was sort of chaotic, but he wouldn't have it any other way. He didn't know what he had done to deserve a girl like you, but he really hoped this wouldn't be the last Halloween he would be celebrating with you by his side.
