Chapter 3: Inspection Day Part 1

Elron was woken from the sound of the metal door opening. It grated against the ground, causing a high pitched sound. Elron groaned and covered his head with his wings.

"Wakey wakey!" said the person that opened the door, "Time for your inspection."

Elron opened his wings and looked towards the human that had opened the cage. It was a soldier, a female. She looked at him then walked up to him.

"Come on," she said, "Get up."

Elron rolled over, away from the human.

"Don't make me press this button," said the woman.

Elron immediatly shot out of his nest. He hated it when the humans pressed that button. It caused the devise in his head to go harwire, making a very narsty headache.

"Good dragon," she said, "Now follow me."

Elron obediantly followed after her. She stopped along three other dragon stables on the way, bringing out a fire dragon, an earth dragon, and an electricity dragon. They followed the woman into the lift. It started to rise. Elron struggled not to let out his previous meal.

The lift eventually stopped, on what seemed to be the third floor. Elron had never been to this floor before, he had never had an inspection before. They happened just after a dragon had turned ten years, then again at twenty, and so forth.

Elron followed the lady through a bunch of corridors, and into a wide open hanger. He saw large machines scattered throughout the hanger. He looked up, this place was gigantic.

"Okay," said the woman, "Line up here. The manager should be here shortly."

With that she walked away, leaving the dragons trying to figure out where they were exposed to line up. Eventually they found themselves in a straight line, all facing forward. Elron found himself at the end, he looked sideways to the other dragons.

By the looks of it, the fire one was a female. Her scales were shined to perfection and she didn't seem to have a scratch on her. Her wings were neatly folded to her sides and her tail was curled in a strange fasion.

The next dragon was the earth. Elron didn't see much of those. This one was a male. It was extremely muscular, and had curved horns, like a ram. It's tail ended in a giant mace like tip. His green scales weren't shined, but they seemed to be very clean in any case. The dragon also had green eyes, which Elron found very strange.

The next dragon was the electric one. It was also a female, her scales were clean and they were also gleaming. It seemed every dragon who was in this inspection had been cleaned to perfection. The electric dragon had straight horns and a few scars around her body. Elron noticed a hole right under her wing, probably a bullet hole that hadn't quite healed up yet.

Elron looked straight forward. He suddenly seemed very aware of himself. He checked his wongs again to make sure no rust had formed over night, and made sure his shell and armour were propaly cleaned, but everything was in order, if anything, he was the most daziling dragon there.

The dragons waited a few more minutes, figiting around, trying to get rid of any nerves in there body. Eventually the door on the other side of the hanger opened, and a squadron of soldiers walked through. They marched towards the dragons.

A man was walking by himself, in between the soldiers, who were spread out around him. He was walking in a very 'important' like way. He held himself high and his clothes were different from the other soldiers. Instead of the army greens her wore a blue uniform, that looked very uncomfortable.

'That must be the inspector,' thought Elron.

The soldiers lined up in two seperate lines, on either side of the dragons, creating what looked like a square, wihout one of the edges. The inspector stood in the middle, the women standing next to him at attention.

"These are the new dragons?" said the inspector.

The woman nodded, "Yes sir, turned ten two weeks ago exactly. The only reason we didn't do it then was because they weren't all here at the time."

The inspector nodded. He was wearing blue gloves, which he now took off. The man began to walk towards the dragons. He stopped in front of the fire one.

"Name?" he asked.

"Scarlet," said the woman.

"Gender?"

"Female."

"Species?"

"Fire."

"Experiance?"

"Been in three missions so far. All of them successful."

The inspector nodded.

"Step forward," he said to Scarlet.

She did as the man told her to. The man then began to walk around her. He made one circle.

"Open your mouth," he said.

Scarlet did as she was told. The man ran his fingers across one of her sword like teeth. He took his hand away and Scarlet closed her mouth.

"Spread you wins," said the inspector.

Scarlet did. The man walked under them. He reached up and grabbed her right wing. She flinched at the contact, but the inspector hardly noticed. He ran his finger across ther dragons wing. He looked back to the woman.

"She's healthy enough," he said, "Sharp teeth and strong wings, and a very good complection. I want her placed in the breeding chambers, and also I want her on at least one mission a month. That should get her in tip top shape."

A few of the humans giggled at the unintentional pun. Elron silently growled, they were dragons, not animals. The inspector moved to the next dragon, the earth one.

"Name?" he asked again.

"Terra," replied the woman.

"Gender?"

"Male."

"Species?"

"Earth."

"Experience?"

"He has been in thirteen missions. Seven have been failours. He seems to no be able to get out of the place he's in fast enough."

The inspector nodded slowly, a thoughtful expression on his face.

"Step forward," said the inspector.

Terra did as he was told. The inspector did what he did with Scarlet. Looking around the dragon, checking his teeth and wings. When he had finished he stepped back.

"Another healthy dragon," he said, "Very strong. Put him in the heavy lifting area, and the front line. He will be helpful at getting weapons and such to the front, and he will be very useful with moving large war machines."

The woman nodded and noted it down on a note pad Elron hadn't seen until then. The inspector moved onto the next dragon, and the ritual continued.

"Name?"

"Celestia."

"Gender?"

"Female."

"Species?"

"Electricity."

"Experience?"

"She has been in four hundred and thirty missions with a success rate of seventy five percent."

The inspector raised his eyebrows in surprise.

"Well then," he said, "That's a very successful dragon. Now, let's see what your made of dear, step forward."

Celestia stepped forward, and the inspector did the same thing as the other dragons. He walked around her, checked her teeth and then sent her back into the line.

"A strong dragoness," he said, "I want her in as many missions as possible, consider her a full time fighter."

The woman nodded and noted it down. The inspector walked over to Elron. Elron shuffled his wings slightly, trying to calm his nerves... and anger. He didn't really want a human prodding him and seeing what he's made off.

"Name?" said the inspector.

"Elron."

"Gender?"

"Male."

"Species?"

"Metal."

The inspector looked over to the woman with a raised eye brow, "Metal?"

"Yes sir," replied the woman, "He is the newest species we have found."

The inspector smile, "Well this is new. Experience?"

"Four hundred and ninety nine missions with a ninety nine point eight percent succes rate."

The inspector looked back towards the woman, surprise written all over his face.

"That means he has only ever failed one mission!" he said.

The woman nodded, "That's what it says in my notes."

The inspector looked back towards the dragon, "Well, you are quite something. Step forward."

Elron did as he was told. The inspector began to walk around him, taking extra time, trying to take in as much of the dragon as possible. Elron had to force himself not to follow the inspectors movements. When the inspector asked him, he opened his mouth, letting the man fiddle with his teeth. He then spread his wings, letting the inspector have a look. He was just about to rub his finger across the dragon's wing when he was stopped by a shout.

"Stop!" shouted the woman, "Don't touch the front of the dragon's wings. They will cut your finger off."

The inspector looked towards the wing in surprise, "How?"

"His wings are very sharp, sharper then the point of a needle. Touch it and you can say good by to your thumb," she quickly explained.

'Dammit,' thought Elron, 'Stupid human, why didn't she let the man touch my wing. He would have gotten a well deserved suprise.'

"Is there something else I can use," said the inspector.

"You can use your knife, I assume you have a lot more at home," said the woman.

The inspector nodded throughfully. He took out his knife and touched Elron's wing. The knife seemed to attache itself to the dragon. The inspector hurridly pulled it away, revealing a large cut in the metal of the knife.

"Wow," he said, "This dragon does have sharp wings."

He walked to the front of Elron.

"I want this dragon in the mission area," he said, "With his extremely high success rate we need him there. I also want him in the breeding rooms. A new species of dragon can easily be spread through others. This base could use a bit more metal dragons."

Elron silently groaned, he really didn't want to go to the breeding rooms. Dragons were supposed to mate for life, he really didn't want this, but at least he got the missions. It was better then what Terra had got.

"Okay," said the inspector, "Now that that's done, lets see how well the dragons can handle themselves in battle."
