Tristan was sitting behind his desk with his notes open and his books piled up in front of him. It was his senior year in high school and he was a seventeen year old with dreams. He was months away from starting college. He had secured places in top colleges and life seemed almost perfect for him from any outside observer. Yet, even though he had achived so much he knew it was not enough. He had so much responsibility. He had to live up to his mother's expectations and his father's standards. But he put all aside when he thought of his beloved, Vienna Rosario made him happy. She was all he needed in his life to feel like he could do anything. Without her, he wasn't sure if he could accomplish all he wanted in his life.... He wanted her by his side. He wanted her in his room right that very minute so they could study together. That was it. He wanted to hold her hand every day and do everything with her but of course he could not have that privilege for years to come... He was dating her but marriage was years away. Until then he wasn't allowed to have the delight of holding her in his arms when he wanted... He wasn't allowed to feel her presence under one roof as himself. He wasn't allowed to be a shield for her and protect her at all times just because it was only the beginning. They were still teenagers and there was so much to learn in life for both of them... He couldn't wait to see her in college in a few months. At least that was a positive aspect of attending a private school run by O'Neils... It was possible to start the first year of college at seventeen which he had opted to do, by long distance learning in his senior year of high school just like how Vincenzo and many others had. Now he just had to wait for Vienna to turn seventeen and then they could have some space in college. He could go straight into the second year of his course and could help Vienna with her studies in the first year. He respected Vienna's father's rules but having her in a sorority was not convenient. Rules were rules. He was to live in a fraternity with other boys from his school under heavy security and Vienna was to be with the girls... He wasn't sure how he felt with her living under the safe roof as Letizia next year. He found it peculiar. But of course there were some sane ones in her sorority that he didn't mind... Vanessa, Clarissa and Cristina were the ones that Tristan was hoping for to be Vienna's room mates. He preferred not to imagine himself walking into Vienna's room at visiting hours seeing Letizia Marciano.
Tristan dropped his pen. He sighed as he looked outside. It was snowing. It was a cold winter in New York. It was the 1st of December 1979. Christmas was coming up soon in a few weeks and a start to a new decade was going to follow up shortly. The 80s were going to be different and everyone knew that. FBI was closing in on criminals but O'Neils and Rosarios were not in danger yet because they had covered their tracks. They left no traces of evidence anywehre. FBI had found them to be untouchable. That was it. If you wanted to survive you had to be untouchable.
Tristan turned and looked at the telephone on his desk. He was contemplating to call Vienna. He had seen her in school but he wanted to take her Christmas shopping. Rosarios were busy at this time so Vienna didn't go shopping often close to Christmas time. It was Francesco and Adele Rosario's wedding anniversary just a week after thanksgiving and the occasion extended beyond a week or two. Francesco was away for the past week spending time on his anniversary holiday and he was away in the weekend too.
Francesco Rosario kept business and personal matters mutually exclusive. It didn't matter if he was the head of an underworld organisation and one of the most feared criminal mob bosses in the whole country. He still took time off to spend time with his wife. He still took her on a vacation to celebrate his 18th wedding anniversary. Tristan really admired that about Francesco Rosario. He admired how he never sacrificed time for his family unless he had to. He hoped that when he married Francesco's daughter one day in future he could be a good family man. He was going to use every power he had to have a great family and do his duty as a husband and father no matter who he was to the rest of the world. It shouldn't have mattered if he was to inherit his mother's and his father's businesses. It shouldn't have mattered if he was to be a crime lord... It shouldn't have mattered if his father's enemies forecasted that he was going to be the most dangerous leader of his generation and amongst Irish families in the same way they forecasted Vincenzo to be the most influential and powerful Italian-American leader of the decade. It didn't matter to him how rivals were forecasting he was a force to be reckoned with. What mattered was his family. His father loved his family above no other and had sacrificed so much for him and his siblings... His father, Emanuelle O'Neil had given up on countless number of his own dreams so he could be enabled to take over from his father in the illegal business and could protect his family from the inherited enemies of grandpa O'Neil. That was it. This was a legacy challenge. He was the son of a mob boss and this was his legacy just like his father.
Tristan walked to his desk and decided to call Vienna. He smiled as he dialled the number. He sat down and tapped his fingers on the desk. The telephone wasn't answered... He sighed. Probably she wasn't in her room or wasn't she? He called Vincenzo. He always answered Tristan's calls. Tristan suspected that Vincenzo had blocked all telephones besides his own one now for this week that he was in charge in absence of his father. When Francesco was away, Vincenzo was ruling.
The phone call was answered and Tristan heard Vincenzo's voice " Hi Tristan."
Tristan asked " What's with blocking her number?"
Vincenzo responded " Why does it matter? You don't need to speak to her on the phone. Come see her if you want to speak to her. Telephone communication is kept minimal... If you want to come over make it quick... I don't like people staying here near midnight... Your time keeping is at its worst. You know full well how I work and yet you decide to question it at this time of the day... I have curfews... Only the Irish have no sense of time..."
Tristan was annoyed " Sure, you block her phone and you set curfew too.... You need to re-think these arrangements... I will bring her back by midnight?"
Vincenzo asked " Hold it... What do you mean you will bring her back... Who said you are taking Vienna anywhere? It's nearly midnight?"
Vincenzo was not minding his own business. Tristan did not like that. He would have told him where to stick his words but of course, Vincenzo was Vienna's big brother. He wasn't meant to fight him. He never thought he could ever be closer to Vienna's twin, Viggo more than he was with Vincenzo. But now out of her two brothers, he preferred Viggo's rationality. Viggo had changed. He was not the same. It all was because of what had happened not so long ago.
Tristan spoke in an impatient tone " I am taking her shopping for Christmas. Do you have a problem with that? I don't think you do... I will see you in fifteen minutes..." He then hung up the phone soundly. Vincenzo was going too far. He pushed him too far.
The phone rang.
Tristan sighed and picked up " What now?"
Vincenzo spoke " Bring some Irish whiskey."
Tristan spoke " Why do you need Irish whiskey?"
Vincenzo chuckled " The Irish whiskey is for you... We don't have any in the house...." He then hung up the phone.
Tristan put the phone down. This was Vincenzo's dark humour. He was underage legally to drink and he wasn't keen on alcohol but he drank Irish cream whiskey just like his father.
Tristan got changed quickly into his suit and tie. He wore a long coat and made his way out. He was seventeen now. He had no curfew... He made his way to the front of the mansion and instructed guards to get into cars to follow him. He got into his car and turned on the engine. He then made his way to Vienna's house as cars were accompanying him. He was confident in taking care of himself and no one in their right mind were going to come after him in New York where his father had a reputation of owning a quarter of the city police and being known to be ruthless with his enemies. Tristan wasn't so proud of being feared but he was. Wherever he went he made people shake. He didn't like his father's reputation to follow him. But his father believed it was him that had that effect on people. Tristan was told he was feared but he didn't find it believable because he knew he had to set s reputation in the real world and not just school.
As his car pulled at the gate of the Rosario mansion, the Rosario guards surrounded him. As he took down the cars window he was immediately allowed in. He was the only non-Rosario who could carry a gun inside. No one could take his gun away. He intended to protect Vienna at all times with all he had.
As his car pulled in front of the mansion, he saw Vienna behind the window waving at her. He smiled and got off the car. He walked inside and watched her walk down the stairs quickly as he walked up.
Vienna jumped into his arms and embraced him. Tristan lifted Vienna as she put her hands on his shoulders. Vienna whispered "I am so happy to see you come here tonight... Let's go to my room..."
Tristan kissed her on the forehead and put her down "Your room? i was thinking along the lines of ... going out tonight... Why don't you get changed... We can go shopping tonight... Are you in the mood for shopping?..."
Vienna looked taken back "At this time? Vincenzo doesnt like it... Let me ask him..."
Tristan shook his head "Well, I am your boyfriend and I like to take you out tonight... You need a break..."
Vienna bit her lip "Tristan... Ask him first... He gets mad..."
Tristan closed his eyes... She was tormenting him... His name on her lips still sounded as sweet as it always did... Her, biting her lip still sent his body into euphoria and she was as oblivious as always to what she did to him... He shook his head and opened his eyes "I asked him already on the phone..."
Vienna raised an eyebrow "But the phone is cut off..."
Tristan sighed "No. His phone is not cut off... Why dont you go get changed and wait for me in the foyer while I speak to Vincenzo?"
Vienna wanted to argue but then saw Tristan putting his hands on his hips ready to argue back... She knew that look... that was impatient Tristan... She didnt want him to carry her to her room to get changed... She felt too shy if that happened again right in front of guards around the house... She blushed at the memory and whispered "Ok..." She then walked away. She wished Tristan didnt go to talk to Vincenzo... She never liked it when Vincenzo and Tristan clashed on anything... Most times they clashed about her. But she hoped nothing happened between them.
Vienna got changed quickly and walked down the stairs. She paced the foyer and then minutes later, she saw in delight that Tristan walked down the stairs... He spoke as he walked towards her " He wants to come follow us... He will be waiting for Letizia... We can go outside make a snowman while we wait. The snow is not heavy now..."
Vienna's eyes lit up... "I would love to do that..."
Tristan loved how the simplest suggestions made her smile. What he enjoyed, she enjoyed too which he also loved. He watched Vienna sprint outside. He followed her enthusiastically. He watched her pick a spot in the gardens "How about here?"
Tristan nodded "Why not?"
Tristan helped Vienna make a big ball of snow and another small one. It didnt take long to make a massive snow man.
Tristan walked around the snowman and admired it as he watched Vienna still trying to make finishing touches and making it round. He hesitated at first... He stood behind Vienna watching her as he took a deep breath. He spoke carefully "Vienna... can I ask you something?"
Vienna turned around "Yes..."
Tristan looked at her with a soft expression "Do you know what you do to me?"
Vienna blushed "I dont ...."
Tristan smiled and shook his head "Tsk tsk... Don't even go there..." He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her towards him. Vienna chuckled as she found herself falling on him as he fell backwards into the snow.
Tristan layed on the snow and gently and put Vienna next to him to lie down. He turned to her "You make me so happy?..."
Vienna smiled "You make me so happy too."
Tristan reached his hand to hers and held it tightly "One day... I will marry you... One day we wouldnt have to be having christmas in two separate homes... One day we will have our own home and will have our dinner together on one table... One day all of this will happen... But that day is years away... Can you wait that long?"
Vienna nodded "I can... Can you?"
Tristan chuckled "Of course... I know I cant protect you right now... I know I have so much to learn... We have to go to college... We have to become the best of the best ... But we cant be together until we are ready... Until then... We can dream ..."
Vienna nodded and smiled weakly "We can dream... An American dream..."
