Chapter Six
Something goes right?
Carols pov:
Carol stood in front of the mirror as he examined himself. His dirty blonde hair went unbrushed. He was wearing a Lincoln park t-shirt and some grey sweatpants. Is this too bland? I feel like I need something else.. Maybe a hoodie? That might work. Yea... that will work. Carol thought as he grabbed a black hoodie from his closet and threw it over his Lincoln park t-shirt.
What would Charlotte think of me? Would she want me to just wear my t-shirt? She usually wears shirts, jeans and a jacket over her shirt. What about Daniel? Would he understand? No, I've only told Charlotte. Oh shoot!, I almost forgot about my gloves! Carol quickly grabbed his Grey gloves from his nightstand and put them on his hands, carefully as to not touch the wooden nightstand. He quickly grabbed his phone and earbuds and shoved them into the pockets of his hoodie.
It was one of the reasons he didn't like his deathly touch, he couldn't hug people or grab things properly. The good thing about the gloves was that they were thin. Carol grabbed his backpack from the side of his bed and made a small cut into the Void. He checked his phone, the time read six thirty two, he had time. Carol slowly walked into the Void where he gently floated. He usually came here to calm himself or to check if any new souls joined the Void. Sometimes they were lost or confused and needed help to reform. He saw a few souls, about three.
The first one was a soul demon. She usually was nice to him and tried to tell him what the time was, usually she was either spot on or a few minutes off. She had passed due to getting shot. For what reason, she didn't say. Her name was Harmony Elliot. She was white with dark blue eyes the color of the ocean. Her hair was light blonde with slight curls. She wore a nice green shirt with some fluffy purple pajama pants. Her wings were a Dark Blue, so was her tail. She chose to stay until Carol was comfortable with himself.
The second one was a Light Devil. He had passed due to getting involved with some shady people. He didn't talk about how he passed. What he did talk about was how proud he was of his son, and how much he missed his wife. He didn't go back because he was afraid of the same thing happening again. His name was George Phillie. He was black with dark brown hair. He had red eyes.
The third was a Dranoic. She had passed after getting hunted down by humans. She was friends with Harmony and usually gave him slight tips on how to help himself. Her name was Aiyla Alyona. Carol thought the name sounded familiar. Wasn't that the last name of Amaris? "Hey guys! How are you doing today?". Carol asked the three of them. Harmony looked at his clothes and nodded. "Is that really what you wear to school? What about you take off your jacket? Maybe you could keep it off for a bit, let people and monsters see you!". Harmony asked Carol. Carol thought about it before he shrunk down a bit. "N-No, let's not, it's really cold in the school. Plus! It's also time for me to go! I-I'll see you two lat- three later! Bye!". Carol quickly made a cut in the Void and appeared in his room.
He was breathing heavily, he hadn't realized that until now. He didn't want to look at himself anymore. He wasn't like his friends, he had to do this. He wanted to stay home, he didn't want to be judged everywhere he went. He didn't like how many people or monsters looked at him. Carol carefully placed his gloved hand around the doorknob and opened it. He went down the stairs, His mother stopped him. "Carol, you need to eat breakfast..". She told him. Marie had white skin with black silky hair. Her eyes were light blue. Her face was filled with worry. "I-I'll eat at school mom". Carol quickly told his mom as he walked out of the door.
He waited for the bus. It came in, he looked at his watch, three minutes. Did I have homework to do? Did my mom have anything to sign? Is there any tests today? What about practice tests? What about me? How do I look? I probably look terrible. What would Charlotte do? I'm not sure, I'm not Charlotte. Where's the bus? Did it forget me? Who else would forget me? A lot of people or monsters maybe. No one will remember me. My mom would move everything. Charlotte would make more friends. Maybe if I went into the Void permanently, everything would-
Carols' thoughts came to a stop as he saw the bus approach his house. Carol smiled. Maybe everything wasn't so bad after all. The two doors slid open and he got on. He saw Charlotte and walked to the middle section of the bus. He sat on the inside of the seat. As the bus started moving he felt Charlottes hand on his shoulder. He slightly jumped. "Are you okay? How were Harmony and the others?". Charlotte asked Carol. He froze for a second before responding. "Y-Yea! I'm good. Is that meeting at your house still on?". Carol quickly asked Charlotte as he looked at her. He had only told her about Harmony but only mentioned the others by personalities.
Do I have my phone on me? Probably, I don't usually forget it. Charlotte nodded to Carol. Her phone buzzed and she opened it. Her eyes widened as she looked at it. "Is something wrong?". Carol asked Charlotte. She seemed to be at a loss for words while she stared at her phone. "N-No, it's nothing important". Charlotte told Carol as she shook her head. He had a bad feeling about Amaris. He knew that she was possibly Envious.
Envy was the one thing he feared, Everyone feared it. He didn't want to fall into isolation and be a hollow shell of who he was. The thought of Amaris being infected with Envy was terrifying. Mostly because of how freakishly tall she was. Her claws would be longer than they were already. He imagined her kicking down the door to his house, hissing uncontrollably. Where would he hide if Amaris found him?
Certainly not under his bed. Being six foot three wouldn't help him at all. He knew that Amaris was a soul demon but her powers wouldn't be that much of a help. Her powers would be gone but anything she saw she would attack. He would probably freeze in place. Did she know where he lived? Probably not.
Carol looked out the window. The trees, grass and gravelly driveways passed by in blurs. The chattering on the bus got louder. How loud would it get before he couldn't stand it? He didn't want to find out. Carol grabbed his earbuds from his pocket and shoved them into his ears. He glanced at his phone and opened Spotify.
He put on the soundtrack for Ultrakill. He hadn't played the game but the soundtrack was good. Everything around him seemed to get better. Nothing could bother him anymore. Nothing but the sound of Electric guitar, drums, piano and occasionally woodwind. Carol leaned against the bus window, a bad idea, until they got to Mist high.
It was seven thirty by the time they got to the school. Carol felt Charlotte carefully shake him in the shoulder. He took out his earbuds, put them in the case and put his phone away. He was glad it was Friday. Wasn't there that lecture in Biology soon? Was that today? He didn't want to think about it.
Carol quickly got off of the bus with Charlotte and walked into the school. Usually Charlotte would wait for Amaris by the sidewalk. Was something wrong? He could usually tell when something was wrong with someone, mostly because of his Deathly sense. He would check it later. It only took a bit of magic to check the list of people or monsters he'd met. He did have to get to know them before they were on his list. He had checked the list a few days ago and everything seemed normal. Carol wondered what would happen if he checked it now. He walked into the cafeteria and got breakfast.
Carol held out his hand and a small Orange list showed up. It was like an internet browser but with people or monsters' names. It was also in alphabetical order, it was very easy when someone's name started with an A. He looked at everyone else first. Amanda would pass from heartache. Charlottes was old age, His own was old age, he was grateful for that, Daniels was old age, someone named Nerrine? Was he the girl that sat behind him in Human studies? Or was that the girl that Daniel kept swooning over? She passed from old age. Someone named Simon passed from a stroke, did Carol know him? Probably not. He scrolled back up to Amaris' passing. It had changed. Hers was no longer old age but being stabbed? Stabbed by who? It couldn't be Charlotte, she loved Amaris too much.
If not her then who? Carol would try to ask people or other monsters about it later. Maybe his mom could help him. He ate his French toast sticks as Charlotte sat across from him, so did Daniel, he sat to the right of Charlotte. Another monster by the name of Jeremy approached their table and sat with them. Next to him. Jeremy looked at Carol. "I heard there was some secret plan with Amaris? Everything okay?". Jeremy asked Charlotte. Charlotte seemed to try and find the words to say but nothing came out. She shook her head no. She looked as if she was shaking. "No, not at all... Amaris said she can still make it to the sleepover, so I'll talk to her about it when we get there. I don't want to talk about it..". Carol stayed silent. He was worried about Amaris' relationship with Charlotte. If she was Envious, how many days has it been since she got infected? If it was five, then they were too late. No, the school would let them know via text or the announcements.
Carol was nervous when the end of the day came. He had texted his mom halfway through his lunch period to prepare some stuff for a sleepover. He had told his mom about the sleepover the day before. Marie, Carols Mom, had told him about coming to drop his stuff off so that he was prepared. Him, Daniel and Charlotte were prepared. Daniel had asked if he could bail at the last second; Charlotte had threatened Daniel by saying she would tell everyone to support him. Carol wasn't sure what she was implying but it sounded good enough for Daniel to stay.
Carol quickly got on the bus and sat next to Charlotte. Daniel has sat in the seat across from them. He checked the list again. Amaris' passing was still the same. He faced the list away from Charlotte so she didn't have to see it. He knew they couldn't change it. No one could unless they themselves changed. Change is hard but you can try. The bus ride to Charlottes house was calming, mostly because he was listening to music.
When Carol walked into Charlottes house, it was very calming. They walked over to the dining table in front of them. Charlottes mom, Irina was very nice and offered some muffins she had made. They were Lemon flavored. It wasn't his favorite flavor of food, but it could've been worse. Charlottes dad, Jarred, had made the extra room into a place with sleeping bags. He had said that it was like an inside camping trip. He found camping fun.
Carol knew that Charlotte had everything handled. Everything would be fine. Right?
