Chapter 7 Calling on Lila
On Sunday, the farmer, his wife, and Nathaniel all rode to church together with the horses and buggy. The horses, Steady and Speedy lead the way to the place. It took place outside since the pastor just passed through town on occasion but the weather was nice for late February. The service was not out until one in the afternoon. At the close of the service, the group shook hands with the others in attendance, then went back to the farm for a late lunch.
Later, after lunch, Nathaniel thanked them for their kindness and went to call on Lila. The elderly couple was happy for him but took a nap while he was away. This was due to their being in their late eighties, and being worn out faster than when they were younger.
Nathaniel was happy to see Lila had not forgotten about the situation. He thought she looked rather pretty in the blue gingham dress, with matching shoes, complete with a hat that had a blue ribbon around it. He had to admit she dressed up well for a woman her age.
"Miss, I am in my early twenties, so are you anywhere close to my age?" He had asked.
Lila had laughed, and said, "I am twenty-two does that count?"
Nathaniel had answered, "I reckon it does since I am twenty-one myself." He had blushed at the thought that he was with someone one year his senior. However, since she was happy to see him and he was glad to see her he figured the age difference was not that big of a deal.
Lila and Nathaniel went on a walk together. They figured they might as well advantage of the nice day. They chatted a bit about their lives and what they had been up to lately. At some point, Lila had grinned when she heard about the birth of the new baby calf, the ducks, and the recovery of the foal. She was more than happy to hear about the animals as she did love animals herself. She was not a vegetarian, but she did much care for pork. She mostly ate vegetables, fruits, grains, chicken, fish, and a few waterfowl.
Nathaniel found an old pie tin in the shed and had decorated it for her. He handed it to her proud of his work of art. He noticed she blushed more each time he came to call on her. Granted this was only his third time but who counted them anyway. He knew he certainly did not bother with such trivial things.
Lila glanced over at him when she thought he was not looking and blushed when he caught her. She felt rather silly about the entire thing. She knew for sure she liked him but was not sure yet how much. She was inexperienced with this sort of thing as she had never been one for socialization.
