Chapter 6 Birth of a New Calf

Nathaniel could hardly believe it.  The fiery redhead girl, Lila had agreed to let him court her. Plus, he could not help but notice she was shy at the time. He wondered what caused it. He scratched his head and thought well at least Lila agreed to be his girl.

After he left the ranch, where she lived he went back to the farm to help with the corn harvest.  Harvesting corn was hard work, but he was a hard worker though.  As the sweat rolled down his back, he grinned a big grin that he had not in years.

Around noon the farmer came outside to tell him it was time for lunch, so he took a short break to enjoy the delicious meal.

Nathaniel felt as if the farmer's wife had gone all out just for him again. He was sure of it as the farmer and his wife did not eat much these days.  He saw the farmer's wife had fixed chicken salad, mashed potatoes, biscuits, some lima beans, and watermelon for dessert.  To drink they each had the choice of iced tea or lemonade.  He enjoyed all the food and a glass of freshly squeezed lemonade.

He often felt like the son the farmer and his wife never had.

A  few weeks later, he was about to leave the house when he heard a scream from the direction of the barn. He had never gotten his boots on in a hurry more than he had that day.

Nathaniel immediately ran to the barn without a  bit of food or even so much as a drop of coffee. He arrived at the barn to see a cow had laid down and refused to move. He was glad to see the farmer himself was not hurt, or dead.

"What seems to be the problem?"  Nathaniel asked.

"The cow is pregnant and refuses to give birth, " The farmer answered.

"Oh, well I am glad you or the misses here did not have a heart attack," Nathaniel said.

"Thank goodness, that is not the case then, " The farmer replied.

"Ok, what can I do to help?"  Nathaniel asked.

"You can start by bringing me some towels, boiled water, and a sponge," The farmer responded.

He went inside the house and brought the farmer the items he asked for that day.  He went back to the barn and handed the things to the farmer.

     "Thanks," The farmer said.

"Now what do we force the cow to give birth?"  Nathaniel asked.

"Now, we wait to see what happens,'' The farmer replied.

A few minutes went by, a funny noise was heard as the cow started to give birth to her calf.

A  few hours later the calf stood up healthy as ever and drank some of its mother's milk. The farmer was pleased. He turned to Nathaniel, and said, "How about you name this one?'

Then the farmer slowly walked back to the house.

Nathaniel stood there for a moment as he tried to think of a good name for the calf. He examined the calf for a while, then smiled.

"I shall call you Daisy since you are a girl cow and remind me of a Daisy," He said.

Then, he left the barn and returned to the house just in time for brunch. After brunch, he fed the horses while the farmer took care of the pigs.  The farmer's wife cleaned the kitchen, and the men took care of the other chores.

Once the horses were fed, the barn cleaned up and the sheep fed, Nathaniel went to collect some eggs from the chickens. One chicken had laid 4 eggs that day, and another one 1o eggs, so they had 14 eggs total.

Nathaniel tried to milk the goats but they refused to let him do anything.  "Stubborn goats," he muttered under his breath.

At the end of the day, the farmer, his wife, and the ranch hand all sat down for supper.  Then, the farmer sat down on the sofa to read the newspaper,  his wife cleaned the dishes, and Nathaniel sat down to read a magazine.
