Chapter 5 Lila Change's Her Tune
Not long after Nathaniel had gotten himself out of the engagement to the mayor's daughter, he was plowing in the farmer's field one day when the other woman showed up. That is right, the fiery redheaded woman came to see him.
The woman had tears in her eyes, slapped him, and yelled, "How could you do this?"
The stranger pulled her close and asked, "Young lady what are hollering about anyway?"
The lady sniffled a bit, and asked, "How could you leave me for someone else?"
"Miss, I assure you I have no idea what you are blabbering about now." He said.
"Oh, is that so why I ought too..." She yelled, but then stopped.
He laughed when she glared at him. He watched as she held the skirt to her dress, and stomped off. He scratched his head in confusion at her sudden exit. He had no idea why the lady was so mad anyway. He thought to himself, what on earth was that all about anyway. He shrugged his shoulders, continued to plow the garden, surer than ever that women or more like this woman was trouble.
He finished right before lunchtime. Later, as Nathaniel Kurtzberg sat down for the meal he laughed at the thought that perhaps the tough girl must have a crush on him.
A few weeks later, he went to properly introduce himself to the young lady in question.
"What are you doing here?" She asked.
"Miss, I came to call on you that is if it alright with you," He said as he took his hat off.
"The name is Lila, Lila Rossi, and you are?" She asked.
"Nathaniel Kurtzberg, " He said and gulped.
"Nice to meet you, Nathaniel." She said.
"Oh, and I would be pleased if you would call on me," She replied. She blushed a bit feeling suddenly shy around him.
Nathaniel was surprised at her sudden change in attitude. Normally, she would bite his head off as if she wanted to feed it to the pigs. He wondered what happened to cause the sudden change in her.
