Chapter 20
2 months later~
A gentle breeze carried the scent of pine throughout the forest. The warm sun shined down on Marinette as she traveled down her well known path. She was holding a fresh bouquet of flowers.
She stopped when she reached the two tombstones with her parents' names etched on it. She knelt down beside them, gently laying the bouquet up against the stone.
"Hi mama, hi papa," Marinette said softly. "I miss you more each and every day." Her eyes then travelled to the newly placed tombstone with the name "Alya Cesaire" etched onto it.
Marinette smiled softly and placed a bouquet of flowers next to Alya's tombstone. Her eyes watered. "I miss you," she whispered. "I'm sorry I couldn't save you."
Strong arms were suddenly wrapped around Marinette's waist, startling her. They squeezed her tight. Blonde hair brushed up against her face and soft lips pressed her cheek.
"Hello, my soon-to-be Queen," Adrien whispered.
Marinette smiled and faced him, returning the kiss. Since Gabriel was exiled, Adrien took the throne. That meant he was officially King. He and Marinette planned to get married in the future.
"Hi," Marinette replied softly, her face falling.
Adrien's gaze traveled to Alya's tombstone. "It's not your fault she was slain by my father."
"I could've saved her," Marinette mumbled, letting go of Adrien.
"No," Adrien replied, shaking his head. "You need to stop blaming yourself."
Marinette didn't answer; she just stared at the ground. Adrien spun around and sat criss-crossed in front of Marinette. He lifted up her chin gently and stared directly into her eyes.
"She wouldn't want you to be sad like this," Adrien whispered.
Marinette's pupils shook as she looked at Adrien. Finally, she nodded. "You're right," she said in between uneven breaths. She grabbed Adrien and pulled him close, burying her head into his chest. "I just miss her so much," she cried.
"I know," Adrien nodded, rubbing her head comfortingly. "We'll get through this together, I promise."
Marinette nodded and cracked a smile. Without Adrien, she didn't know what she'd do.
Adrien stood up and outstretched a hand. He smiled. "Come on, my lady. We have some cheese to get for a certain kwami."
Marinette laughed, grabbing his hand. She stood up. "Yes, of course."
The two skipped childishly to the village where everything was going smoothly. Nino and Rose were outside tending the fields, Kim, Ivan, and a few other villagers were rebuilding a damaged building, and Max was teaching lessons to a few of the uneducated children of the village. Since the village never had enough money for education, the children were not fortunate enough to get a good one.
"How's everything going, Nino?" Adrien asked his friend. "Need some help?"
"Yeah, dude!" Nino exclaimed with a joyful smile. Adrien cracked his knuckles, rolled his sleeves up, and grabbed a shovel. Marinette giggled.
"Just dig up little holes there for seeds," Nino instructed, pointing at a patch in the dirt behind Adrien.
Adrien nodded enthusiastically and turned around. "No problem," he glanced at Marinette. "Watch my awesome gardening skills!"
He jabbed the shovel in the dirt, scooped up some of it, and threw it behind him. He was about to continue this process when Marinette started laughing.
"What?" Adrien asked.
Marinette laughed and pointed behind him. Adrien turned around and Nino was standing there with dirt all over himself. The boy spit some of the dirt chunks out of his mouth.
Adrien laughed sheepishly, scratching the back of his head. "Oops."
Marinette then glanced over at the pub and she widened her eyes at the sight of Mylene nearly falling over as she carried out a huge loaf of bread. Marinette rushed over to help her friend.
"I got it," Mylene assured her. She stepped shakily down the steps. Marinette backed away, inspecting the bread. It then started tipping over.
"I got it!" Marinette exclaimed, and she caught the bread just in time.
"Wow, thanks Marinette!" Mylene laughed. "I thought I had it but obviously I was wrong."
"No problem," Marinette winked.
"Hey Marinette," a quiet voice said. Nathanael was approaching her. If he hadn't been in front of her, she probably wouldn't have heard him.
"Yeah?" Marinette asked.
"Are you staying in the village or are you moving to the Kingdom?" Nathanael asked meekly.
"Well, for now, I'm planning to stay in the village. This is my home after all," Marinette smiled.
"Good," Nathanael smiled. "I'm... happy for you and Adrien."
"Aw, thanks," Marinette smiled.
"I'm sure Alya would be happy too," Nathanael smiled.
Marinette nodded slowly and inspected the village, smiling wider as she did so. In the end, her deceased friend got her wish. The King was out of power and the village could live peacefully now. Marinette took in a deep breath, exhaling slowly. She closed her eyes. "She would."
Marinette opened her eyes and glanced back at Nathanael, but he was gone. She looked around herself quickly. The red haired boy was nowhere in sight. "Huh," Marinette murmured. "He sure is quiet."
Marinette walked back over to Adrien who was still helping Nino. He wiped some sweat off his forehead and then excused himself. He was covered, head to toe, with dirt. Smiling cheekily, Adrien tackled Marinette with a hug.
"Ah!" Marinette laughed, slapping at Adrien's arms. "You're gonna get me all dirty and I'm positive Chloe said she didn't want this dress to get ruined!"
"And you care what Chloe thinks?" Adrien paused, raising an eyebrow.
"Well, considering she saved our lives, I would do her that much!" Marinette defended.
Adrien backed away and inspected Marinette. "Oops," he mumbled with a grin.
Marinette looked at herself. The dress was wrinkled and covered in dirt. She shrugged and laughed. "Oh well. I guess it doesn't matter now." She glanced back at Adrien who had a mischievous glint in his eye.
Adrien was about to move towards Marinette again when a loud scream filled the air. The lightheartedness that filled the atmosphere a moment ago was gone and Marinette and Adrien knew they had a job to do.
She nodded at Adrien and immediately, the two hid behind a tree, transformed, and reappeared as Ladybug and Chat Noir.
Ladybug brought out her yoyo and began spinning it around. The perpetrator came into view. Ladybug glanced at Chat and smirked.
"Shall we, my lady?" Chat Noir asked.
Ladybug's body filled with determination as her eyes focused on the robber. She was prepared to keep peace for everything she stood for. For her parents. For her village. For Alya.
She took a step forward, her heart beating with confidence.
"We shall."
And they all lived happily ever after.
...
well, except for the robber.
