25 - Two years later
Tired Noah sat down and propped his head up with his elbow while he shut his eyes for a moment. It was almost dawn after a tough night. They treated a string of accident victims and some were critical. He was glad they were still alive when they left the ED. He didn't want to know the outcome. Although he should care, not knowing was often easier. He wouldn't be facing any grieving parents.
"Tough night, huh?" Stephanie sat down beside him. He nodded. "I meant to ask you, how was Molly's wedding?"
"It was nice. They make a great couple."
"Is it true you fixed them up?"
"What is it with this place and rumors? Brenna wanted Molly to forgive her, because I'm such a great guy they both wanted me." Stephanie snorted and Noah glared at her. "We decided if she met Greg, she might forgive her and she did."
"Is he really your stepbrother?"
"Technically, but we're adults so I don't know. My mother is married to his father."
"Crazy, huh?" Stephanie groaned. "I have to check on the puker in three."
Noah smiled. Had she referred to Brenna as a puker the night she was here?
The wedding was actually more than nice. Noah had accepted Bill's place in his mother's life. He was man enough to admit he had a strong woman by his side who helped him accept things he never would have on his own. Brenna looked amazing at Molly's wedding. They were friends again, but also family. Life was strange like that.
As nice as Molly and Greg's wedding was, it was nothing like Aidan's. His and Sage's was unbelievable. There must have been five hundred guests and very few were from the Reilly clan. Sage may have been a princess on her wedding day, but she was just one of the family when they got together. He had a lot of family for a man who two years before only counted his mother.
When his shift ended he couldn't get out of the hospital fast enough. He ran into Derek who was coming in to work.
"Hey!"
"Long night?"
"You don't want to know. While you were tucked up with my sister-in-law, I was saving lives. When are you going to take the plunge, man? Mia deserves it. She loves all the romantic stuff."
"Why is everyone asking me? Aidan can be a real pain in the butt about it."
"Hey, Aidan and Brenna are getting harassed too. Maggie wants grandchildren, and she wants her youngest married off to a nice surgeon. I smile when I'm referred to as Dr. Reilly's son-in-law. What are you waiting for you're older than sin?"
"Watch it. I gotta go."
Noah smiled as he walked home to their condo. They hadn't had a fancy wedding, because Brenna wanted to protect him from being sad. He hadn't been sad. How could he have been with Brenna as his bride? A long time ago, he thought his life was over after his first time with her. Instead, she was his life. She brought life back to him. Noah honestly didn't know how he got so lucky.
It was quiet when he entered and he wondered if she was still asleep. Pepper greeted his ankles. Unbuttoning his shirt on the way to the bedroom, he was dying for a shower. He leaned over his wife to kiss her, and her eyes opened.
"You're awake." She nodded and smiled. It was much too big of a smile for so early.
"I left something in the bathroom. Will you look at it?"
Did she find another bug? She hated bugs. More than once he teased her she married him to take care of the bugs for her. He slipped out of his shirt and began on his belt when he entered the bathroom and stopped short. On the counter was a box with a plastic stick next to it. They had only been trying for two months and he had reminded her it may take time.
"I couldn't look. You have to." She hollered from the bedroom.
Slowly he walked to the counter and picked up the stick. The plus sign was perfectly clear.
He walked out of the bedroom holding it in his hand. He suddenly felt nervous for the baby, he just found out he had.
"It's negative isn't it?"
"When have we ever failed an experiment? So the plus is pink does that mean it's a girl?"
"Plus! Pink! What the hell medical school did you go to, Brown? Is it really? Are we? Am I?"
He sat on the bed and scooped her up. "Yes, yes, yes and I know it's too soon to know what it is, but can we find out when it is time?"
"I don't want to do one of those stupid gender reveal parties. That's something Sage will do if she ever decides to have a kid."
"Oh wow! My mom will be so happy!"
"We can't tell her. We need to wait to make sure it takes."
"Takes. Good thing you didn't go to medical school. Baby, I love you and our baby." He leaned over and kissed her flat belly. He was already imagining it round with his son or daughter.
"If it's a boy, I really want to name him Declan. What do you think? Would it be too sad?"
He thought for a moment and shook his head. "No, I think that would make my brother happy. Maybe we should take a trip to the fountain."
"You believe?"
"I did, but lately I've had my doubts."
"Why?"
"Because that egghead still hasn't proposed to your sister."
"Oh, let him be. Mia isn't complaining. Maybe I missed my chance because he keeps her happy."
"Are you two talking about sex again?"
Brenna just laughed. Maybe someday he would understand the Reilly sisters, except one was Gentry now. Noah smiled as he went to take his shower. He would never fall asleep, but it was alright because he had other things he could do.
