Chapter 57
WARNING: Crying
"Hey, Kiddo-" Patton looked around. Virgil wasn't there. "Kiddo? Kiddo?!"
"Down here, Pat." Came from over the side of the boat. Patton ran over and looked down. Virgil was hanging over the side of the ship, just holding onto the deck.
"Holy-" Patton cut himself off. "Kiddo, what happened?"
"Can I explain that when I'm back on deck?" Virgil asked, his feet scrabbling for a rock.
"Oh, yeah, right." Patton grabbed Virgil's hand and helped him over the side of the ship. "Now, what happened?"
"I was trying to be helpful and I slipped." Virgil said sheepishly. "Anyway, are you okay?"
"I, yeah- Kiddo, you sure you're okay?" Virgil shook his hands and legs, giving himself a mental once over, before grinning and nodding.
"Yeah, I'm good."
"Right, okay." Virgil grabbed one of the ladders up to the crows-nest and started to climb. Something was off about him and Patton really couldn't work out what. "Hey, Kiddo?"
"Mhm?" Virgil didn't look down. Patton started to climb after him.
"You sure you're fine?"
"Pat, how many times do I have to say this? Yes, I'm fine." Virgil went to swing himself over the side of the crows-nest but his hand slipped and he started to fall. Patton grabbed him.
"Kiddo, careful!" He yelled. Virgil looked back at him fleetingly and nodded. This time when he swung himself over the rim of the crows-nest, he made it safe.
"Are you sure-?"
"Yes, Pat, I'm fine." Virgil said harshly. He didn't snap but he was close to it. It didn't scare Patton, it made him more worried if anything.
"Kiddo..." That was when Patton realised what was up with Virgil. He was never clumsy. Something definitely was wrong. "Kiddo, why didn't you just tell me something was wrong?"
Virgil looked at Patton with panic in his eyes.
"Wh-Wha- Nothing... Nothing's wrong." He tried to lie. Patton climbed over the side of the crows-nest.
"There's something wrong." He said. Virgil looked down and sat down in the crows-nest, hugging his knees to his chest. He wiped the corner of his eye.
"It's..." He trailed off. "I've lost a lot of people, Pat. I've lost them and found them dead." Virgil hugged his knees tighter. "I guess Janus was just sorta the last straw. I just can't seem to take it a-anymore." A small half-sob broke his words.
"Hey, hey, hey, Kiddo." Patton sat down next to Virgil. "Hey, you shouldn't have to take all that. That's a lot of stuff to go through. I'm impressed that you made it this far. But you shouldn't push down your feelings."
"What else am I meant to do, Pat?!" Virgil asked, tears streaking his make-up. "I'm supposed to be the one who looks after everyone else, I'm not meant to be the person who-" He cut himself off and put his head on his knees, trying to hide little choking sobs.
"Hey, Kiddo, it's okay to need to talk to people. Just because you're the person who takes on other people's problems doesn't mean you don't have problems too." Patton bit the inside of his lip. He didn't know Virgil felt so bad, he should've checked in with him. "D'you need a hug?"
Virgil nodded. "Ye-Yeah."
Well, this turned out a lot more self-projecting than I thought. Also, no, I don't know what this is. But you all wanted more Virgil so *weird magic flappy hands* Here
Bye,
Blaize
