Chapter 49

"You know, this storm is getting rather boring now." Remus said, measuring his words carefully.

Janus didn't reply. Remus could tell he was listening.

"I can always make this stop."

"I'm not helping you escape." Janus said, gritting his teeth.

"It's one way or the other, Janus." Remus said. Janus looked up at him sharply at the sound of his name. "Either you help me escape and this whole storm stops. You go to Risuca with one less mermaid. Or you don't help me escape. This storm carries on until the ship sinks. I'm freed, either way. You can either live to see me escape or die."

Janus glared at him. "I'd rather die."

Remus smirked down at his claws. It was a ghost of a smirk, not something Janus could see.

"Suit yourself."

"I don't think Remus is my soulmate." Logan said. Patton looked up at him and tilted his head.

"What makes you say that, Kiddo?"

Logan shrugged. "Certain factors." He said vaguely.

"Want to tell me or would you rather keep it to yourself?"

Logan shook his head. Not as an answer to the question, he just shook his head. "Have you finished your drawing?" He asked, trying to draw the conversation away from what he'd said.

"Um, yeah. But that's not really important." Patton put his sketchbook down. "Certain factors? Like what?"

Logan looked up into Patton's eyes. Patton's eyes that sparkled with the light of the sun on the ocean. He looked down. "You." He thought.

"Just certain factors." He said instead. "My markings never really glowed around Remus. I suppose I should've realised it sooner. But Remus... he does things to your head." Logan shook his head slightly, as if trying to get rid of some thoughts.

"Huh?"

"I don't honestly want to talk about it now." Logan said. "What does your drawing look like?" He asked, changing the subject again.

"Just like our old beach, Logan." Patton said, smiling. Logan looked away for fear of staring. There was something about Patton's smile that made Logan want to smile too, forever.

"But not as vibrant, I suppose."

Patton shook his head. "No, not really. But, then again, no colouring pencils so..." He trailed off into a shrug.

"What's on your mind, Patton?" Logan asked. Patton sighed and looked up at Logan through his lashes.

"Promise not to tell?" He asked. Logan nodded. "One of my friends, when they were younger, their brother got taken by mermaids. Killed, too."

"Do you know who?"

"Who what?"

"Who was taken?"

Patton hugged his elbows. "I didn't know him personally but a boy called Issac, I think."

"Issac, I know him. He's always stealing books from the library." Logan shook his head fondly. "Of course, he always returns them, he's a good kid but it is rather annoying when my careful organisation gets messed up."

"You know him?" Patton asked. "But he's dead?"

"Oh no, he's quite alive." Logan said. "Alive and well. And quite mischievous." Patton's mouth fell open slightly.

"He's alive?" Logan nodded. "Oh my God- He's alive?!"

"Yes. You're repeating yourself, Patton."

Patton shook his head. "Sorry."

"Are you alright, Patton?" Logan asked. Patton looked up at Logan. There was this light in his eyes that wasn't usually there. It was almost wild, so excited and surprised.

"Yeah, um, fine."

"I'm going to escape either way." Remus said. "You might as well help me."

Janus said nothing.

"It's either help me or die." This seemed to have no effect on Janus. "Fine. But you can just wait. Just wait and watch as your ship goes down, all your friends drown and your sweet, brave captain dies. Watch them all die for nothing."

This seemed to have done the trick. Janus hesitated, biting his lip. He opened his mouth and closed it again and opened it again.

"Fine."

HOW IN THE MOTHER-HECKING HECK DID THIS GET TO #1 IN LOGICALITY?! I ask you, where is the romance?! HOW?!
Bye,
Blaize
