Chapter 46

Remus tapped against the lid of his tank boredly.

"Wonder what's taking so long." He thought. "Of course, he's probably avoiding me. I mean, I would avoid me too if I could."

Still, his plan was working. Janus' mental state was deteriorating, which meant his resolve was too. Once his moral, spirit and resolve were at a basic zero, all Remus had to do was a little light persuading and he'd be gone. All perfectly planned out.

Of course, he couldn't actually execute the plan if his unwilling associate didn't actually show up.

"Hey Kiddo." Patton said, grinning as he skipped past Janus. Janus grabbed his arm gently.

"Patton?" He asked quietly. "Where were you last night? You weren't with the rest of the crew. Virge's worried sick."

"I'm going to see him now." Patton said, not answering the question.

"Yes but where were you?"

"Oh, I was with Logan." He said this as if nothing was wrong.

Janus stared at him and his grip on Patton's arm loosened in surprise. Patton took this as a signal that he could go and grinned at Janus before skipping off to find Virgil.

Logan hid his hands behind his back quickly as the trap-door opened. Instead of Patton, who he would've expected, Janus clambered out.

"Hm. A meeting with the great captain of the ship." Logan said, putting up a cold front. Better cold and distant than hurt. "To what do I owe the honour?"

"What did you do to him?" Janus asked. Logan blinked at him.

"To whom are you referring too and what exactly do you think I did to them?" He asked, hoping the strange wording would throw this pirate off.

"Don't play dumb with me." It hadn't.

"I wasn't playing dumb with you." Logan said. "In fact, I was using quite an odd way of wording my sentence. So if you could understand that-"

"What did you do to Patton?" Janus cut in.

"Getting straight to the core of the problem, then." Logan thought before answering. "I don't understand what you mean. I didn't 'do' anything to Patton, in the sense of the word."

Janus rolled his eyes and looked at the ceiling. "If you think I'm going to believe you for one second-"

"How did this query come about?" Logan asked, bored with this human's angry ramblings. "Did Patton say anything specifically?"

"He spent the night up here, didn't he?" Logan nodded.

"Yes. It was his specific request. In fact, he checked with me multiple-"

"Shut up." Janus snapped. "Now, I know for a fact no sailor in their right mind would stay in the same room as a dangerous beast so what did you do to him?"

Logan tried not to wince at the words. "I didn't do anything to him." He repeated slowly, as if to a child. "Just because you decidedly despise my soulmate does not mean we are all like him. Some of us are actually rather clever."

Janus looked like he was going to kick something. "Fine." He snapped. "Don't tell me the truth. Lie to me, like everyone else. But I've got my eye on you, mermaid. I know you did something."

Logan shrugged as Janus stormed off. As the trapdoor slammed closed, Logan winced and looked down at his hands.

"I really should stop doing this." He thought as he ran one still-bleeding hand over the deep rivets in the metal. "I'm just making decoration rather than escaping."

I don't know what this was, no. It was fun to write, though.
Bye,
Blaize
