Chapter 13
WARNING: Passing mention of murder
"Hey, Pat. You okay?"
Patton looked up at Virgil and smiled. "Yeah, I'm fine."
Virgil raised an eyebrow at him. "Then you're going to need to go talk to him some time."
Patton's small smile disappeared as he looked down. "No I don't." He muttered childishly.
Virgil blew his fringe out of his eyes. He wasn't used to Patton acting like a child; he had no idea what to do.
"From what you've said about him, I don't think he meant to hurt your feelings. And if you don't take back your post soon, Daniel's going to murder him."
"No he won't." Patton sighed as he tried to explain himself. "He's Daniel. Sure he's a little... well, much-"
"That's putting it lightly." Virgil muttered.
"But he's not going to actually kill anyone. He doesn't have it in him."
Virgil laughed humourlessly. "I grew up with Daniel, Pat. And Remy..." He took a slightly shaky breath before continuing, "Remy tried to take him on and came home with a sharp scratch along his eye and a fucked up lip. Daniel means what he boasts."
Patton looked away and bit the inside of his lip.
"Fine, fine, okay." Patton said, straightening his glasses. "I'll take watch today."
"Are you feeling alright now?" Patton hadn't even gotten to the bottom of the stairs down the brig.
"Uh, how did you-?"
"Your footsteps." Logan said matter-of-factly. "They form a pattern. It's how you walk that I know it's you. Now, back to my question." Logan looked up at Patton. "Are you feeling alright?"
"Uhm, yeah." Patton had never been good at lying and, for some reason, Logan's eyes made that even harder to do. "Yeah, I'm fine."
"Then why were you gone for so long?" Logan asked, not turning his head as Patton jumped the last few steps to the brig.
"I don't usually get sick and when I do, it's usually quite bad so..."
"You aren't showing any signs of normal human sickness." Logan said.
"That's because I'm better now, Kid-"
"No." Logan said simply. "No. Even after human's are classed as 'better' they still show some signs of the sickness leaving their body. Usually in the skin. Your complexion is that of a normal, healthy human, not that of one recovering from illness." Something changed in his face. "Why did you lie to me?"
Patton rubbed the back of his neck. "Kiddo, I didn't, uh, lie-"
"You're lying right now. Tell me the truth, Patton."
Patton bit the inside of his lip before sighing and looking down at the floor. There was something about Logan that made it impossible for him to lie.
"You hurt my feelings, Kiddo." He said eventually, sitting down. "I just needed some time away, that's all. Sorry if I worried you."
"No. It is I who is sorry. I apologise, Patton." Logan said, pressing a hand to the glass. "I did not mean to hurt you."
Patton smiled a little at Logan.
"If you don't mind my asking, what was it I said that hurt you? So I can make sure to stay away from that topic in the future." Logan added quickly.
"Just what you said about me not being able to trust you and you being a creature and that." Patton shook his head slightly. "It's stupid, I know."
"It's not stupid if it hurt you. I did not mean for that to hurt you, Patton." There was real sincerity in Logan's face and voice. "I simply meant to relay the truth to you."
"The truth can hurt, Kiddo."
Logan nodded slowly. "Apparently, it can."
Do I know what this chapter was? No. Did I like writing it? Yeah, yeah, it was fun, I'd say.
Bye,
Blaize
